Yeah, I love that. I love all the little unexplained world-building details. One of my favorites is how on Martian ships, like the Roci, the red lights mean "safety" and blue means "battle" because for Martians in wartime, red represents home and blue represents Earth.

Designs of the ships. How the Roci's levels are like 4 story building. 'Down' is towards the engines, whos thrust creates the fake gravity, and why alex has the little ladder up to the cockpit which swivels to point 'up'

Also with blue light you can more readily see blood…red light makes blood and injuries harder to spot. We had blue lenses for our flashlights to look for injuries at night without using white light in the army.

I was a little confused that they didn’t pick up on this considering that one of the guys (still getting their names down) wore a USMC shirt towards the beginning of season one. I thought maybe he was prior service. Doesn’t appear to be the case. Lol.

They made the comment in their season 2 episode 1 reaction that "... 'gunny' might be short for like a military rank, like gunnery sergeant..." I don't think that's an exact quote, but I'm pretty sure they at least suspect that Gunny isn't her name. It also does take them a couple episodes to learn names usually. But yeah if they're still calling her Gunny and not Bobbie in 2-3 episodes I'm gonna be annoyed too.

The reference to the Epstein Drive is to juxtapose that event with the current technological leap provided by the protomolecule. Like the drive, the protomolecule will produce a paradigm shift (hence the title) in the evolution of humanity and their presence in the solar system. The story will continue to unfold and demonstrate the significance of this shift.

This episode is supposed to be the beginning of the second book, which is why you guys said it felt like the first episode of a new season. Book 1 (Leviathan Wakes) ended with Eros crashing into Venus.

I kind of wish they had kept the less-rushed form when it went to Amazon. The first season couldn't cover all of book 1 because it was only 10 episodes long. The 13 episode format of seasons 2 and 3 helped catch up, but then Amazon went back to 10 episodes and they had to keep cutting content. =(

I really wish that they had actually shown some of the Ganymede attack. One of the craziest parts of the books! (Spoilers below) ”It grabbed an UN Marine in its huge hands and tore him in half like paper. Titanium-and-ceramic armor ripped as easily as the flesh inside, spilling broken bits of technology and wet human viscera indiscriminately onto the ice. The remaining five soldiers ran even harder, but the monster chasing them barely slowed as it killed. ‘Shoot it shoot it shoot it,’ Bobbie yelled, and opened fire. The creature was a relatively slow-moving human-sized target, running a straight line. Her targeting computer could do ballistic corrections that would let her hit a softball-size object moving at supersonic speeds. Every bullet she fired at the monster hit. It didn’t matter.”

This is why people say that the Expanse is "diversity done right" because notice how most of the fan-favorite characters are women, and no-one has to make it political, they're just badasses in their own right.

The battle in orbit was was just Mars and Earth forces shooting each other because Earth was being attacked, Mars thought Earth was charging their side of the line and communications were being jammed. Both sides thought the other was initializing hostilities and simply reacted as you would expect with tensions as high as they were. By the way, those huge pentagonal things in orbit of Ganymede oare orbital mirrors that focus sunlight onto the agricultural domes.

Like I said, Earth ground troops were under attack first and since the hybrid jams comms of anything in range of it so earth comms must have been jammed long before Martian comms. It would not surprise me in the slightest if earth responded by initiating the combat in orbit.

Ganymede is a moon of Jupiter. It's bigger than Mercury, rotates and has a metallic core, and that means it generates its own magnetic field. That field protects it from cosmic radiation, as well as the radiation from the Sun that makes it out, that far. It only has about the same gravity as Luna (slightly less, in fact) which means it's comfortable for Belters. As such, it's a pretty key planet for them, as you guys have probably figured out, by now. Saturn is the next planet out from Jupiter. "Paradigm Shift," is a short story set in the universe of the The Expanse, meant to illustrate the impact of technology and provide background information about the setting. If you look at the eccentric orbit of Eros, you'll see it would provide a great way to make it from Earth or Mars out to the Asteroid Belt. Basically, you could fly from either of those planets (at different times) and dock with a station on Eros, and then ride it out to the Belt. As such, it would become a significant waypoint as part of the transportation infrastructure between the inner planets and the asteroids. However, with the Epstein Drive, it becomes much faster to fly directly from either planet out to the Belt, and back again. That makes Eros unnecessary, and it then becomes a backwater nobody pays attention to, any longer. And that's why Dresden performed his experiment at Eros -- it's not some place anybody pays much attention to, anyway, and if they're distracted he can do what he likes, to the Belters. Chrisjen does bad things for the best reasons. She's very much an, "ends justifies the means," sort of person. Your guesses are so fun to hear. :)

Phoebe is in orbit of Saturn, and Ganymede is in orbit of Jupiter. Eros was roughly in the same orbit of Sol as Mars is. Ceres is in an orbit of Sol between Mars and Jupiter, but closer to Mars than Jupiter. Tycho Station is also between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The Canterbury was collecting ice from Saturn's rings. At this point in the story, the most distant human outpost is on Triton, a moon of Neptune, but generally there is little human activity beyond the orbit of Saturn.

I was watching a video on how comets asteroids are often pulled in by other suns. Ejections are common. Jupiter Saturn and other massive non sun planets sometimes will these objects into their orbit or crash into them. I think it is amazing that objects flying through space from other sun systems made it to our system. I think a few years back, a long log like asteroid was identified as not from this system called malumauma or something. It would be interesting to find some and see if life exist in fossils or organic compound in space rock

I love how all the planets, asteroids, moons, etc… in this show are real places in our solar system. NASA has compiled images of them all over the years, and it’s fascinating to imagine them being colonized by civilization at some point down the line.

Regarding the questions about it "feeling like a primere" that's because last episode was the end of the first book and this was the beginning of the second book (Caliban's War). They ended season 1 at the 2/3 part of the 1st book to really introduce the world and characters properly.
