The monkeys with a microwave thing is a reference to an analogy in the books about playing with technology you don't understand. If monkeys started playing with a microwave some might think it's a light because a light turns on when you open it. Some would think it just makes noise when you push a button. Some might think it's a weapon because things you put inside when you turn it on die. They don't understand enough about it to grasp the whole of what it does just as humans are poking at the protomolocule not knowing what it's really for.

The excerpt from the book is as follows: “Holden was starting to feel like they were all monkeys playing with a microwave. Push a button, a light comes on inside, so it’s a light. Push a different button and stick your hand inside, it burns you, so it’s a weapon. Learn to open and close the door, it’s a place to hide things. Never grasping what it actually did, and maybe not even having the framework necessary to figure it out. No monkey ever reheated a frozen burrito. So here the monkeys were, poking the shiny box and making guesses about what it did.”

James Holden was the invited guest. The Martian marines were party crashers. They barged in and started throwing their weight around, firing bullets at the invited guest. The room tried to erect a baby partition to keep the party crashers bottled up, but then one got unruly and did something destructive that the purple goo couldn't contain. So that crasher got himself turned into red mist. And a bunch of ships placidly following the speed limit suddenly got pulled over by the law thanks to the actions of the MMC.

Like many have told you and will continue to tell you, you're asking all the right questions. The vision Holden had at the end was not supposed to be 100% obvious; it was a bunch of images without a clear through line or context. Later, when you have a better idea of what it meant (and you will), you will go back and it will make more sense, but right now, you took from it just about what most people took -- some vague ideas without confirmation and a lot of questions. It's frustrating, but also keep in mind the Protomolecule, the ring, the ring station/nucleus... all of this stuff is of alien origin; the beings that created all this stuff may not think or perceive reality exactly the same way we do, so you sort of have to rely on vague images and impressions to understand it all. You're doing great. :) One other thing I can tell you that may help (or may confuse you more) -- the episode description released with this episode talks about Holden seeing "past, present, and future." So when you ask if this is something that happened, something that is happening, or a warning of something that will happen, the answer is ... yes?
@jrich749
@jrich749 2 жыл бұрын
This is no a spoiler, and its extremely obvious on re-watches, but its a station log. No 'future' events are shown. Our system has 3 planets near our sun. The producers were very sad that so few people, that watched the show, know that information.

@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 2 жыл бұрын
@@jrich749 I'm not sure where you're getting the "producers were very sad" stuff -- can you point me at a source for that comment? Because I consume enormous amounts of media related to this show, and I've never seen anyone associated with the show say that. I'm ready to be proven wrong, though. Show me. Also, for whatever it's worth, I quoted the episode description that appeared with the episode, and still does. I quote: "Holden sees past, present, and future." First sentence of the episode description. So interpret that as you will, but I'm just repeating what it says. Furthermore, if you look at Holden's vision and freeze the frame at the point where the sun is full frame but before it turns blue (about 39:03), you can very clearly see three planets, a tiny one in the upper right (presumably Mercury), a somewhat larger one in the lower right (presumably Venus), and in the foreground, a medium sized *blue* planet. Once the sun *does* go blue, the three planets are still visible and the blue one looks even more like Earth. Mars is not visible in this shot, but could be on the other side of the sun. Finally, it has been stated multiple times by people associated with the show that the protomolecule creators do not necessarily perceive time the same way we do, making the idea of a station log somewhat less concrete than what we might imagine. From Holden's perspective, the vision could be seen as past, present, and future, whereas to the protomolecule folks, it might just be a series of events without any timestamp. ALL of this is conjecture, of course, but please grant me that my conjecture (and that of the people who wrote that episode description, apparently) is at least as valid as yours.

1.Miller was destroyed and rebuilt to fit on the specifications Holden requires. 2. In the show there isn't a multiverse, the rings are doors to other Solar Systems, perhaps in other galaxies, the Universe is the whole thing ever known. 3. The martian caused damage in the place, and the protomolecule just used him as a plaster to fill holes.

I think Julie was something that exceeds the operating parameters, or those memories weren't part of his programming, but to convince or manipulate Holden, they reprogrammed (rebuilt) Miller with those memories. I think that's what the delay was between disappearing and reappearing, they had to find the right files, lol. .

How long was the protomolecule travelling? Probably a lot less than most people think. Consider the way it moved Eros. It was able to attain 15 Gs and still be able to move evasively, make itself radar invisible etc. So why would we assume that Phoebe simply drifted across the interstellar void? The builders grow themselves an ice ball around a generous portion of protomolecule and a big chunk of radioactive unobtainium then fire it off in the direction of a nascent star system that seems likely to produce life at some point. The protomolecule proceeds to do its physics-defying schtick and ramps up to a measurable fraction of the speed of light, crossing the void in maybe a couple hundred thousand years instead of tens of millions or even billions. Then it enters Sol System but then has to frantically shed velocity so it doesn't pulverize the target planet on impact, and it pisses away so much energy that it has nothing left to escape the absurdly strong gravity of that ringed gas giant over there and ends up becoming its newest moon. Oops. Oh, well, maybe the bacteria will evolve into some form that can eventually come to us. Bacteria are curious that way.

I love the idea that "they" intentionally put Phoebe in the solar system.
@MrJethroha
@MrJethroha 2 жыл бұрын
Shooting a whole moon across the galaxy is pretty resource intensive, especially when you have millions of stars to choose from. If they were willing to send an object the size of Phoebe halfway across the galaxy, why did it need to land on a planet to do its business? Phoebe is like 1000x the size of Eros, just swap out 1% of the ice and rock with uranium or antimatter and it'd be a done deal, way more mass and energy than is contained in all the life on earth. If they need the life forms of earth as building materials, then why not just bring the building materials with you if you're sending a whole moon? Also, if Phoebe had enough energy to decelerate from 99% the speed of light to enter the solar system, escaping Jupiters orbit would be completely trivial. You could even save energy by just not reducing your velocity to the level that it could fall into Jupiters orbit, decelerating the last bit after you enter the habitable zone. Our probes seem to do alright navigating the solar system with way fewer resources. It seems much more likely that the protomolecule was sent in a more comet sized package in incredibly great numbers and at much slower speeds. It's not like all of them were going 100,000 light years away, some of them are right next door. keeping it on the scale of millions of years is like pacing yourself through a really big meal.
@TheDetailsMatter
@TheDetailsMatter 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJethroha Well, maybe it was a smaller garden variety iceball when it started out, and picked up mass along the way, in interstellar space, with no sunlight to cause the ice to sublimate and break apart. Maybe the plan wasn't to sterilize the target planet, or incinerate it, or blow it to smithereens, so uranium or antimatter wouldn't have been needed. And all of Dresden's self justifying hogwash about "an enemy that has already fired the first shot" was not meant to be taken literally. Regards bringing its own living raw material with it, great suggestion. Just hop back in time an eon or three and forward it to the builders directly.
@omarholder9036

Right and wrong. It was definitely millions of years. But think of what a year is. We measure a year as a time the Earth orbits the Sun. our concept of a really long time is millions of years. Their concept of time is beyond our comprehension, so we think they wouldn't send something that would take millions of years to reach us, but that implies millions of years by our timescale is long on theirs. Also, Phoebe was captured in Jupiter's orbit and not allowed to reach its destination. It didn't intentionally slow down or anything

Best episode of all 6 seasons - for me, at least. It sums up every theme The Expanse represents in a single episode… and at the end you’re left with the biggest “WTF?” moment of all. Also love the reactions to this episode… no-one seems to understand just how big the distances between solar systems are, so they can’t imagine that such an advanced technology would be used to travel such a “small” distance. As if we don’t drive cars to go a mile to the local shops…. Imagine what our ancestors would think ;)

Just to list the themes: - Martians react to the unknown with violence; even Bobbie, who knows better. - Protomolecule sees humans as nothing more than useful tools - Naomi cannot be stopped… by anyone - Alex cares about his family… but gets carried away with emotion - Amos was clearly traumatized as a child… but still manages to do good - Don’t fuck with Drummer - Earth (Anna) means well, but keeps causing bad things to happen - Belters (Ashford’s speech to Diogo) are hopeless romantics, and it keeps leading them into bad decisions - if you put a button in front of Holden, he’s going to press it - Alien technology is beyond our comprehension… and yet we keep thinking it should make sense to us. - Human evil (Clarissa) is petty and stupid. Other universes is preaty much the same as saying alternate realities. Not wanting to spoil it, but this isn't something this show goes into. Other Galaxies are massively faar away, and we have a clue about the protomolecule origin, because it came to our solar system carried by phoebe. Phoebe is extra solar (in reallity we have very good reasons to belive this is so, not just in the show), but that means it originated somewhere else inside our own galaxy, the universe is probably not old enough for something to have come from another galaxy at sublight speeds.

Miller had called Dawes "the patron saint of lost causes." Hmm. Or was that what Dawes called Miller? Anna has a PhD in Theology, which is why she's called "doctor," or actually it's "reverend doctor," but her practical training is as a nurse. What have we always seen has been Anna's "superpower?" She was the master speechwriter. She can give good sermons. Her superpower is her ability to get through to people. Drummer's second in command is Klaes Ashford. The actor is the highly acclaimed David Strathairn, who, like Jared Harris, would not be wasted on a minor role. Yes, if you freeze frames you can see the death beam pass each of the planets of our own Solar system, so, indeed, it was our own Sol that Holden saw being destroyed at the end of his vision. i just realized we're almost caught up to where i am. season 4 was sooo boring for me, it made me stop watching, does it actually get good again?

Yes. And rewatch S4 again. And the book Cibola Burn. It gets better with rewatching. S3 will always be a great high. But they did stick the landing with S6

Given what happens at the end of Season 3, the story needed to take a breath and create a new understanding for everyone of how things has so profoundly changed -- and how the ongoing disruption of the status quo affects humanity. Since things change so much, Season 4 needed to lay new groundwork so the story could continue.

@@thomashiggins9320 what’s most interesting about S4 is the stuff not occurring on Ilus (although I love that frontiersman attitude there). It lays so much groundwork for Marco Inaros, and throws in some Gods of War novella on Mars. It was needed otherwise S5 would’ve been a jolt to the system

calm down. if you're that desperate go subscribe to their patreon. i think they are/were on holiday so it might take a bit longer than usual for some episodes to come out. or they are having other issues with copyright for example.
