Drummer is going through it, but drinking Ashford’s bottle is a big moment. She’s not sad anymore, she’s angry and an angry Drummer is someone to be afraid of. Hats off to DT for just an outstanding performance. It is possibly the best but if acting I’ve ever seen. She absolutely deserved an Emmy or two for this episode alone.

The only oxygen that Naomi has is what is in the body of the ship, and any time that she goes into the between-hull space, she loses the volume of oxygen that is in the airlock. What she is doing with the marks on the bulkhead is keeping track of how much oxygen still remains in the ship for her to breathe.

Dominique Tipper turns in here one of the most raw, visceral screen performances of all time in these final season 5 episodes. I feel everything single thing she feels. She pays for everybody’s sins here. As I have said with Cara Gee in other videos, I just don’t understand how Dominique and Cara and Wes and so many players in this show are not in literally everything right now. These actors should be in top demand.

As much of a cruel and selfish monster as Marco is, he didn’t just gain power out of nowhere. Let’s not forget that our queen Chrisjen’s very first scene included her torturing a belter for information, with seemingly no remorse. It’s exactly those kinds of political conditions that allowed demagogues like Marco to convince an already broken and bloodied population to follow their every beck and call.

This three-episode final stretch was something, wasn't it? So, again, I hadn't read the books and I avoided the heck out of scripts because I had become a fan of the show I was working on. Y'all cannot imagine how hard it was to avoid spoilers. When we built the Tynan, it was unavoidable to see or not see it. Like any character's ship, if we tore it down, it often meant bad things for the character. Even if I had avoided someone's death scene (really hard, except when we had two units shooting), tearing down their ship was not a good sign. I remember having the Tynan still standing was a comforting sign because every time I went to that stage and saw it, I figured Ashford would be around for a while because it was very cool to be working on a show that had "Whistler" (David Strathairn in SNEAKERS) in it. Felt like he'd be main cast until the end. I was obviously wrong. Even though the Tynan stayed up (or was rebuilt? I dunno, memory is fuzzy) after his death (which I knew was likely coming because we did a "series wrap" on David) I just figured we were going to re-dress it like we'd done with other sets. Until it became Drummer's flagship, I remember passing by it as it sat idle. It was like a tomb. There was a reverence in it. And when we started shooting Cara's scenes in there, I knew Drummer would take it over. It still had that reverence, though. On occasion, I'd wander inside for the hell of it. Never told anybody. People would ask where I'd been but I didn't say. And it was usually dark as heck inside. Lifeless and still (we obviously didn't power up sets if there was no need) except for the stage's heater, which added a kind of "engine thrum" to the experience. And that was alright. It felt right to be there in the dark of Ashford's ship. I adored the character for numerous reasons and it was nice to share some quiet time with that character's ghost. There was one thing I did NOT do, though. I never sat in the command chair. Look, we're told to not sit on set pieces and that's usually for good reason. Sure, many of the show's ship sets were sturdy; built for use. And even though it's still considered poor form, lots of us knew which chairs were functional and we sat in 'em. Cuz crew gonna crew. Still, I didn't sit in _that_ chair. No, I thought it was disrespectful. Not to the Sets department (I know, I know, sorry!). Not even to David or Cara. No, I just thought it was disrespectful to Ashford - a fictional character! It sounds silly, sentimental, and maybe saccharine but ... yeah, no. No sitting in his seat. So, when I watched Karal sit in that chair, as a first-time viewer, I had a visceral reaction to it. It bothered the heck out of me. I probably yelled something like "How DARE you?!" at the screen. And self-important me feels like no one else in the universe felt as strongly about it as I did. After all, I had restrained myself so many times in those quiet, stolen visits to the Tynan. And in _her_ first opportunity...? Ugh! Rage! Uncontrollable rage! Haha! I'm such a dork!

I've seen this episode multiple times. Still hurts so much! Hard vacuum is one of the most hostile "environments" we have ever encountered. The prospect of being exposed to that should absolutely be respected and feared. It is not something most people will ever get a chance to encounter in their lives, but fiction lets us see the impossible and improbable on a regular basis. Apparently holding your breath makes you die faster and more painfully in hard vacuum. It was a belter built ship Alex blew up. As for what's going on with Mars, no nation is monolithic. Amos meeting up with Ardun would be quite amusing. Yeah, Marco has that effect. No Belter ingenuity here, just a ton of Martian demolition charges. Not a battering ram. A mine. "I don't like her." Yeah, there's a bit of flooding. That's what happens when massive meteors put cracks in the sea walls. Amos has a reason why he's going to see his brother. Insurgencies are historically hard to fight. Now this is Belter ingenuity. Patching in wires, cutting cables, using the classic pulley.... Del Gato is not the advisor David needs, that's for sure. Keep pushing Drummer's buttons. See how long that works out for you. Naomi was listening and repeating to time it. So that she could force edit the message. Marco destroy the ring gates? Not in his interests, and not in his means. He'd need a LOT of nukes to crack the ring for sure, and you KNOW the blue goo would get mad at him.

You can see in the prior episode that the sun was shining on Naomi while she was floating towards the Chetzemoka. In the vacuum of space, the radiation heat transfer (not the same as nuclear radiation, by the way, though the sun emits that, too) from the sun would be like sticking your hands under a broiler. Any exposed skin would suffer burn injuries.

And the side not exposed to the sun would be freezing in near zero kelvin cold...
@MattNolanCustom
@MattNolanCustom Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminodonnell258 not really. It's a vacuum. There are no air molecules there to draw body heat away. She can only lose heat through infra-red radiation and that is relatively slow. The whole instant freezing in space trope from some lesser sci-fi is wrong. Her sweat and other skin moisture will actually be boiling due to the lack of pressure, but it won't feel hot. All her blood capillaries near the surface will be bursting, and she'll be getting something similar to "the bends" that divers can suffer from rapid decompression as dissolved gases in her blood start to turn into gas bubbles

Naomi is suffering from the bends, and Dominique Tipper admirably portrays what it's like to try to do anything when the joints in her hands and feet feel like they're filled with broken needles. Just a fine, fine performance. Also, Marco's crew stripped the ship of everything useful, so there's no spare oxygen in the tanks; they took all the medical equipment; and the only stuff left behind was stuff they dropped (such as the wrench in the grate) or old space suits they don't want any more (with no oxygen in those tanks, and lousy re-breathers).

If you didn't know, Boom Studios is running a Kickstarter for a comic series that takes place after Season 6, at this moment. Good guess on the PM being on a torpedo. Many sharp eyed reactors noticed that when the Zemeya released all those torpedoes, that we could see the drive plumes were yellowish, but the last one had a blue plume. I don't think this is really a spoiler, because you're a number of episodes ahead and that after the episode aired, people were talking about the blue plume. Yah, Filip believes his mom's dead. David's speech was really good and the actor really did a good job of being nervous to being more confident as it went on. Dominique Tipper did an incredible job here. Having the message that she changed was pretty haunting as it played over the credits. It was cool how they didn't have her talking to herself to fill us in on what she was doing. We have to just watch and try to figure it out. She's got a message in the message but I'm not sure it really conveys the situation she's in. Drummer's anguish scream and anger were incredible as well. Went right for that liquor! Amos and Peaches meeting up with Erich was pretty good to to show how much things on Earth have changed. 8 episodes to go!

For at least the first two series i thought she was the worst character in the series, she was kind of wooden and hanging back, i think DT has said she was struggling to fit in since she felt she was nt a proper part of the cast. Somewhere in season 3 she seemed to find her groove, the storylines picked up for her and good god did she she get better. And keep geting better!

It is basically a fraction and part of what of Naomi suffered. Multiple burst blood vessels, blown ear drums probably, just to start. It would not be surprising if her sense of balance was out of whack. Her lungs would be affected as well (lungs are not supposed to be empty for extended time, but she had to empty them to keep them from basically exploding). This is still a starter list.

15:00 Those were belter ships. You can easily tell the difference between Belter and Inner ships based on their aesthetics alone. Belter ships (especially "military" ones) tend to have more busywork and scrapped /welded together aesthetics whereas Inners (especially Martian ) design tend to be sleeker and more "clean". You can even see this in Marco's Free Navy where you can tell apart the ships he got from Mars (Pella eg) from the one he got from Belter factions based on their visually distinctive designs.

I love this episode because the performance of Dominique. I honestly do think it's done better in the book, just because we get her internal monologue, but the way this is shown on screen is amazing. The fact she doesn't talk (apart from the initial F-bombs lol) throughout it to give any sort of exposition of what's going on is just amazing. The pain she's in from going unprotected through space... so good. The writing and direction is, as always, top notch, but Dominique deserved an award for this episode.

There can be 3 or even more people on Razorback in the books. In fact, in Nemesis Games, at this exact moment, there is a 3rd person there, Martian Prime Minister Nathan Smith. In the books it is described like there's the cockpit with two seats AND a small bunk with two beds. I guess for story purposes in season 3 we needed an excuse to split the group, so we saw just cockpit. I guess that unless they will need to do some evasive maneuvers or use the juice, there can be the 3rd person no problem.

The "calcluation" to know how hard to push off, what direction, etc. is really no different than that needed to determine how to jump over a creek, it just takes practice. With the exception of people like Miller who don't like zero-g, I think the vast majority of belters would have the experience necessary to do that. In the fourth episode of season 1, CQB, even Holden, who didn't grow up in space, was able, under fire, to realize he needed to push off Naomi to get back to the catwalk and then pull her back once he'd activated his mag boots. It's not quite the same thing, but it is using the same type of thinking. When we jump over something, we're not actually numerically calculating the height, distance, and power needed, but our body knows what to do anyway. The difference with Naomi is that she had the conviction to do what she knew needed to be done, that is to get out. As she told Filip, "Walking away is the only choice anyone ever has." Even when that choice required jumping out an airlock without a suit, killing someone she used to love in the process, Naomi took it. Amos is a big, strong guy who barely blinks an eye when half his hand gets shot off and willingly walks into an ambush to take on 4 thugs in a shower, but Naomi is _by far_ the strongest character in this show. Naomi's altered message _always_ seems to give me chills. "This is Naomi Nagata... tell James Holden that I am in... control." This show is SOOOOOO GOOD!

I just realized while watching this, that both the earthers and Marcos side are making the same false assumption that Marco is the whole belt. The earthers want to attack any belter in retribution and Marco thinks Naomi betrayed the belt. She didn't betray the belt though, just him.

You could do what I did and make a few Expanse ringtones. Then you'd have a wee bit of The Expanse every day. Plus it gives you opportunities to tell others about The Expanse on the occasions when they hear your ringtone and ask about it.

The Razorback could fit Naomi even without a seat as long as they didn't do any high G maneuvers. Remember, most of those ships use thrust gravity. So once they rotate the ship in the proper direction, the back wall just becomes the floor and Naomi could just sit down. They are in deep space, there is no planetary gravity that they need to escape.

Bull is a less idealistic perspective combined with an "Earther" perspective. He could be seen a little as a "Devil's advocate", presenting a different perspective to Fred and later Holden to help them ultimately make better decisions.

One of the few shows where reruns aren't all that bad. It's when you see a scene, or hear a phrase, mentioned in season 1, and then pays off in season 5 that you realize how good this show really was. When each new season came out, I would watch from S01E01 and don't count a moment of that as wasted time.

Back on Earth, Eric and Timmy (lol) could still become top dogs in that region. The stability of Eric's previous empire depended on people being in fear and desperate but not be as savagely desperate due the rocks and coming nuclear winter brings. Amos knows he has a better life with "better" people like his family/shipmates. Eric really is his brother, even if just from growing up together. Since Amos has learned to help his family on the Roci, and Clarissa.....maybe Eric also.

The puzzle of what she was trying to do was so good. It gave us all the clues, but I didn't see it till they put it right in my lap. So good. So... to get season 7, we hijack Bezos' orbital shuttle from his summer home? I mean, if any rich dude's got one, right?

I wanna say there's some small inconsistency, her ship isn't under any thrust or gravitational dependancies, in which she should've been able to open the grate without that much strain. But I could be wrong.
@madux42
@madux42 Жыл бұрын
The ship was under thrust. You can even see it burning right before Naomi regains consciousness again in the airlock. Before she jumped, they had finished stripping out the Chetzemoka and planting the bombs, and had just removed the docking bridge and were ready to start moving away from the ship before they would start the Chetz's engine remotely, as planned. They started the enging while she was unconscious in the airlock. When she's back to life, the ship is accelerating and there is thrust gravity. You can see the ship burning at around minute 7.00 in the episode. Also, she doesn't need to use her magboots ever.

i think that the reason Naiomi is in so much pain when things touch her skin, is something to do with the vacuum of space affecting the blood vessels close to the skin, and possibly hurting them so that you feel like your skin is one awful bruise. Not sure tho

It is.. vaccum exposure wont instant kill you or freeze you (there is nothing for you to pass your heat to so only lose heat by radiating wich takes a while) but it will cause several skin bloating and stress... very bad sun burns (also from cosmic radiation) eye bloating as fluids boil .. the skin would hold up as its only 1 atmosphere but it would hurt afterwards and the body would take trauma that would last for a long time .. Naomi took a hell of a beating phisically

Aww, you snagged the significance of Holden's cancer med port on Ilus...so using the oxigenated blood on Monica was perfectly fair! Remember, we saw Naomi calculate in a moment how hard she had to push and exactly what direction to rescue Felicia...so even that had been pre-staged for us. Oksana was wrong for confiding in Karal. Drummer had called Oksana her "ankawala," but that's not how Oksana is behaving. Naomi knew her oxygen on the ship is limited...by warning her friends away, she's consigning herself to die. Moreover, every time she comes back into the ship out of breath, there is less and less air in the ship for her to catch. As a public servant, Avasarala lived comfortably, but she was not ostensibly wealthy. And as much as she hates space, she probably wouldn't own own a personal spacecraft. RIP Nico and Charles. Nico lived close to the water's edge, and we see that Baltimore is submerged. We gotta figure it.
