"Sometimes you gotta stop thinking about it to figure it out." - Amos I've been saying something similar for years. Any time I can't remember something, such as a name, I've learned to stop thinking hard on it after a minute or so and move on to other stuff. The answer then, almost inevitably, pops right into my head just a few minutes later. The subconscious is amazing in how it works like that, still continuing to work your brain in the background while you concentrate elsewhere, once you've imprinted the question in your mind for a bit beforehand. It's also not just memory recall which has worked for me. I fixed malfunctioning computers for years and one time I couldn't figure out the exact problem. Spent a few hours trying various theories but they weren't it. I decided to call it a day (late evening by that point) and went to "sleep on it" shortly afterward. After waking up, the answer hit me in the first few minutes. "Sleeping on it" has also worked amazingly well for memorizing a lot of information if I study it all just before going to sleep. Just fascinating how your subconscious brain can do so much while you don't even notice.

Avasarala has had her moments of “questionable” ethics, but when she stood up and basically said “They murdered my husband but I won’t be a part of murdering innocents in retribution” you realize what kind of person she truly has become. In the beginning of the series she hangs a belter on the hooks with little remorse… fully justifying the end by the means. Now she’s had to face the consequences of what arguably are her _own_ actions. Really, how much responsibility does she share for the rocks thrown at Earth knowing full well she was part of torturing and provoking belters…? The depth of Avasarala’s character is nearly unmatched. Shohreh Aghdashloo is a goddess of cinema, even if I don’t think I’ll ever be able to pronounce her name.
@KevinLyda Жыл бұрын
And considering how religious extremists gained political power and upended her life when she was a young adult, her performance has even more depth.

I think that if killing civilian belters had actually given earth some value, Avasarala might have considered it (e.g. collateral damage for an attempt to kill Marco). But this was killing civilians for no benefit - indeed, it would make the situation worse by driving neutral belters into Marco's arms.

Chrisjen lives by the credo: Never start an argument you haven't already won. In the entire series, she plots conversations like generals plot battles. From coercing the ex-spymaster to send an operative after Holden to convincing Delgado to join her cabinet while at the same time softening his anti-Belter fervor, she stacks the deck before she deals. She is, for better or worse, a schemer. Her skills are honed into two sharp points: Find out what needs to be done, and get people to do it. What she's learned, IMO, is that it is even better to find the _right_ people to do the _right_ thing. If only Cotyar could see her now! _fist on heart_ We miss you, brother!

I say again, Filip’s in an impossible situation. If he had joined Naomi, he would have to confront his crimes too. Without her influence, he felt justified in helping murder millions, but following her would bring all that home. It’s not no-strings-attached salvation. Practically speaking, staying with Marco and the cause is the much less painful option (or so he feels). Add to that lifelong indoctrination, gaslighting, abuse hands of a destructive narcissist, being a teenager, and literally being stuck on a spaceship with the cultists… Marco telling Filip that Naomi “abandoned them again” was horrible but maybe also gave Filip some relief: She is wrong, so he chose “right”. His conscience and nascent identity were being threatened by Naomi being there, and making some very valid points. Naomi did plant some seeds of doubt, thankfully. As for Drummer being asked who she loves more, yes, that’s blatantly unfair. But she is deeply in love with Naomi. You said that Drummer had lost “her dear friend”, but really Drummer thought she’d lost the love of her life. Chrisjen lost Arjun, Drummer lost Naomi (or thought she did), and they’re both similarly grief stricken. As for Arjun, I alluded to it in a comment on the previous episode. Earth is not doing well. Amos and Clarissa had to kill to get to Baltimore. The house staff would likely starve or get killed by the rentacops. Arjun was in New York, which was hit hard. That he didn’t make it was, sadly, always the most plausible outcome.

It's when Drummer agrees that she loves her polyam-belter-fam as much as she did Naomi (despite how unfair asking the question was). Cara Gee made the choice to drop out of her dropped larynx Drummer voice into her much more vulnerable relaxed Cara voice. It gave the moment such a sense of realism. Beautiful voice acting.

I thought Clarissa did the logical thing to difuse the situation when the securities first came. Amos, Erik and Clarissa were at the forefront of the group. Okay, we didn't almost all die but it was, indeed, f*cking cold. It was a true "Fraturday"[1] which had been on the board well in advance[2], and the forecast was a low of -18C/-0.4F with slight wind. Pretty much 3 years ago (almost to the day) in a much colder February than this year. The house was on a rolling hilltop and the prep crews worked hard just to make the set traversable and habitable. Everyone knew what lay ahead and did their best to prepare. _[1 - A "Fraturday" is a Friday shoot that is going to roll well into Saturday. And our call time on Day 2 at the house was __5:00__ ... PM. There are current movements to abolish those.]_ _[2 - No show is perfect but one of the best things about this one was the level of planning. I cannot tell you how important it is and yet how often other shows basically wing it. THE EXPANSE did not like to wing it. The people in charge know your best chance is focus first on story and second on logistics. Y'all may hate meetings but meetings make the magic possible.]_ Anyway, yes, my bosses had to order more heaters for the warm-up tent (big event tents). Hot shots (chemical versions of heated rocks in your sleeping bag or clothes) were ordered by the crate. And, on a normal cold night, we'd limit the time during takes when actors don't have parkas on or crew have to hold gear with thin gloves. ...but of course it was Long-Take Night when Mama Nature decided to give us a taste of a nuclear winter. And, at some point, the wind decided to pick up. Took a team effort to get through it but, if you want to talk about MVPs, then talk to the Stunties and SSE[3] Performers who stood in the woods, far away from the warm-up facilities (cuz, wide shots, plus snowscape preservation) and the few crew who either attended to those "Pinkwater thugs" or had to reset the snow. Yes, that's a thing. _[3 - SSE = Special Skills Extra, if I recall correctly. That includes people who know how to carry themselves with military bearing, even if they aren't firing a projectile-capable gun. Majority of the guns that night were flashers, just flickering lights.]_ Everyone, really, attended to every hurdle, frozen piece of gear, tired/cold crewmate, stuck vehicle, blown over tent, and every other challenge with remarkable (and dare I say it, Canadian) derring-do. Department distinctions meant very little when a heavy object needed to get up an icy hill so we can all get outta there faster. Teamwork _actually_ made the dream work. Cuz, y'know, those are _our_ people. Personally, I remember that night with a certain level of pride. There were some injuries (including minor frostbite) but we didn't almost all die. As hard as our Long-Take Cold Night was, there were contingencies in place for any calamity or worsening of weather. We weren't on the precipice of death. We were just on the precipice of saying, "Eff this! Let's go inside!" We weren't storming the beaches of Normandy or fighting ebola in Africa. We were just making a TV show. ___ Caveat: I'm a Locations Department worker. Outdoor "adventures" are our thing. So, my experience does not speak for everyone's.

Marco Inaros might be the best "Villian-you-love-to-hate" ever. I think Gul Dukat from Deep Space Nine comes close, but I think Marco wins. It actually makes me feel slightly bad for Keon Alexander, because in interviews and such, he just seems like a total sweetheart, and incredibly nice and funny. But he just does such a goddamn good job playing a totally despicable asshole that you can't help but fist-pump every time he gets thwarted and throws a tantrum like an angry child. XD So, amazing job, Keon! Also, I totally get where you're coming from with Bull. He is a total asshole. And a racist. I think you're supposed to severely dislike him. But, over the course of the season, he does demonstrate why he is someone that Fred Johnson trusted to do some very difficult work. Usually, you just want to punch Bull in the face, but there's no denying that he's someone you want on your side when shit gets tough and your back is against the wall.The thing about Bull is, what you see is what you get. He's not duplicitous. He says exactly what he means. For better or for worse, you always know where you stand with Bull. I'm not saying you should forgive him, but it's possible to dislike him and still recognize the useful things he brings to the table. Also, I know he's not a "good" guy, but I just really love the character of Erich. Despite his physical disabilities, he just exudes this aura of confidence and fearlessness that has probably made him a very successful mob boss. I don't remember the name of his actor, but he does an amazing job and makes a very strong impression in a very short time. And it's fucking rad to see a disabled actor like him get such an amazing chance to shine on such a great show. I hope to see him in more stuff! The entire "Battle of Winnipesaukee" is one of the most thrilling sequences ever put to film. I mean that. A huge, continuous shot of just utter chaos and bloodshed that visually tells the story of these people running to their shuttle and getting the fuck out of there while dozens of other people are trying to murder them. Also, I think you might have a missed a really good line. Right after they all re-enter the hangar and see all the people Clarissa killed with her mods, Erich says, "I'm gonna be a lot nicer to her now!" The scenes between Erich and Clarissa are some of my favorites too. They both have very interesting perspectives and seeing them converse without Amos there is pretty fascinating. Oh, and yeah, Delgato and Davey-boy were totally gaslighting. They were reacting on emotion: anger. And in Delgato's case, that anger is largely self-directed due to his own failings pre-rocks. The emotion comment was just enraging.

The clever thing with the writing is you HATE Clarissa for doing what she did, but now you understand desperate times call for desperate measures. Those days were desperate times and desperate measures for Clarissa, she was cut off from most of her family, her sister dead (maybe murdered as far as she is concerned) her father in prison for life, her super rich princess life completely over and seemingly at the hands of one man, James Holden. She never was a bad person, not in the sense of a villain or evil, she was manipulated by her father and her life destroyed

I think there would be something special lost in translation. Even when a choice in the games is obvious, you still chose that path. You have to actively choose to socialize with your crew between missions. A non interactive linear story sucks a lot of the charm out.

2:28-2:50 Have a Snickers. You're not you when your hungry. First time I caught the interrupted and reconnected message, I knew "She's editing the message, based on the analysis of the words/syllables she had available" Only because she's proven herself to be sharper than me. I _might_ have come up with that solution, if I had the knowledge she has, but it would take me a lot longer to figure out 1. to do it, 2. how to do it, and 3. actually achieve it. 7:18-7:27 I do think Marco, in many respects is quite smart. "super" maybe not. But he's got way too much ego and pride for one person to contain and be successful. Marco is an egotistical, narcissistic monstrosity. 9:49-9:55 "The answer to violence, is seldom ever violence." I appreciate you said seldom. There is the rare case where it is true that someone is "so involved in violence as an absolute, that violence of greater magnitude is the only thing they will understand" I pray I never have to deal with such a person. "sub orbital" by name alone means it is "unable to achieve orbit" but certainly able to get high enough to be collected by a ship in orbit, and ferried to an orbital position, or to be ferried to a ship or station or even Luna. A sub orbital shuttle would have everything it needs for its maximum crew + passenger load to be in a limited (i,e, no usable) atmosphere for many hours, it can't achieve a sustainable orbit (without system failure) or break out of orbit (to head to the moon) unaided.

Naomi is a an engineer basically so she is hella smart but she is also a Belter. They live their whole life in space so have a basic level of knowledge about of how to survive in space. Even Diogo showed some of that savvy when he and Miller were planting explosives on Eros. Miller was a was welwala sellout for most of his life so he didn't have the same skills set; though he was a good investigator when put in the effort. I don't think Naomi was actually angry at Cyn. He assumed she was going to kill herself, like his old memory about her. I think she was truly sorry but she knew this was her last chance to escape and she wasn't going to sacrifice the chance to save the Roci-fam. RIP Cyn. Belters have been exploited for their labor and not given their due share. Killing millions of inners was a disproportionate response. Marco's anger is justified but his methods/intent are corrupted because he is a vain, power hungry, fuckhead. His irritation is delicious, I just wish he wasn't dragging down folks like Cyn and Filip with him. Good Belters who just want the boot off of their necks.

If there had been a shootout immediately with the rentacops, Erich and Amos were in the line of fire without weapons. Oksana, Michio, Josep, Betold, and Serge are more than Drummer's friends, they are her spouses. If someone asked me whether I love my wife more than my best buddy...I certainly can answer that question. So, if Naomi were nothing more than a friend in Drummer's heart, there would not be a question about who she is most loyal to. Oksana knows that Naomi is more than just a friend in Drummer's heart. But Oksana is wrong in her approach. She should still be in total confidence with her wife, not with Karal.

Winnipesaukee is a real vacation place. My dad visited once. It evidently hasn't changed much in spirit in this show. Still a place with seasonal vacation homes, only now without hotels for the not rich. The fact that Naomi was able to calculate the oxygen of the room in that state.... The downside of your success being built on a long strong of plans, when they succeed and you're out of plans, now you have to wing it! We ALL love to see Marco foiled and realizing he's been foiled. No, these are just the names of the dead tied to those currently on Luna. I imagine the spired would reach out of the building if it was everyone dead. David seemed so nice and unsure. Now he has a taste for ununiformed blood. Insurgent and civilian alike. "Assimilation and compromise" You mean like being threatened to exchange a family member as a hostage for a bishy political officer who thinks she's captain? Yeah, nobody is happy to find out THAT's the punchline payoff. Peach Melba, it's a dessert. Ardun doesn't show up int he final season, so.... yeah. He's probably dead Being backlit makes you an easy shot. TOASTY! Yep, they love their cliffhangers.

As she mentioned the long take in the fighting scene, I was reminded of "Victoria", which is an entire film shot in one single take over several locations in Berlin, actions scenes etc. This single shot gives it a unique dynamic, but it is also a great story, and the protagonist (Victoria, played by Laia Costa) is just amazing. It's on Netflix (at least her in Switzerland). For me, it was the best film of the year, it came out (2015). I can highly recommend it.
@mina_en_suiza Жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention: If you watch the film without subtitles, it will even be more immersive, as the protagonist doesn't speak German and communicates only in English. You can get a glimpse of how that works by searching e.g. "Victoria (2015) piano scene" on KZbin.

Correct, sub-orbital by definition can't reach orbit. It was a mistake in the script.
@MattNolanCustom Жыл бұрын
Possible get out of jail card: if you don't intend to come back down to Earth and land, you have spare fuel. Maybe enough fuel to reach orbit and then rendezvous with a transfer ship. An orbital ship needs enough fuel to reach orbit and also enough fuel to de-orbit and land, plus enough fuel to carry that extra fuel. If you're not planning on having to do the second half of that, the fuel for a sub-orbital might just suffice.

Going back to Niomi repeatedly going into vacuum and keeping track and of her Oxygen. If you do the math based on the volume of the airlock (which they show her doing) and a reasonable guess at the internal size of the ship by checking comparison to the Pella, she had many more attempts available than she used (but it’s a nice touch). The bit I like is the fact they show her taking the suit off each time (rather than just the mask to take a fresh breath) which is accurate because she has to get rid of CO2 buildup - you actually exhale about pp16% O2 so it’s not so important for Oxygen but essential for CO2 removal. In fact after several cycles in reality she’d move to a different part of the ship when putting it back on. And yes - saying sub-orbital really really annoyed me because if that’s all they could do it’s useless to them (well - I guess they could go anywhere else on earth but that’s pretty much established as pointless at this point) but I guess the point is that’s what they tend to be used for. But if they can get to the moon single stage (we can’t even do single stage to orbit and arguably may never) I think calling them Orbital Shuttles or short range Earth system shuttles (put a more eloquent way) is far more appropriate! Given the attention to accuracy this show maintains that obvious inaccuracy really surprised me. Also - they don’t seem very practical to use without a flame trench to direct the exhaust away from basically destroying the hangar and house on liftoff! And given you sad you watched it immediately, prepare for some controversy over ship control dynamics in vacuum! And I will go on to say you will have to replay the bit you know I’m talking about several times before you get a full mental picture of what happened.

_"To define is to destroy. To suggest is to create."_ - Mallarme It's one of my favourite quotes but I'm going to go against it to do something I rarely do, which is to 'correct' a viewer's perception. The intent of the show's storytelling is to depict a woman who loves Naomi deeply, without reciprocation. Drummer _luh-luh-luh-luvs_ Naomi. She could be mad - she probably _wants_ to be mad enough to move on - but she loves her too much. It's important context because, since I know you've already seen the S5 finale, it drives her decision-making. She knows she cannot fight the wind, so she pivots her sail to move with it. (Also, she hates Marco for being Marco. So, that puts some wind in her sail, too.)

A minor character they didn't include from the books is the Free Navy's logistics guy who is constantly reminding Marco they needed Earth to have surrendered already, and they need the war to be over *now* or everyone is going starve. Earth is still the only planet that can support life. Earth can't afford to feed the belters, that nuclear winter is happening all over the globe. Earth is going to be pretty hungry very soon.

Yeah, "suborbital shuttle" was ill-considered technobabble. It should be "cislunar shuttle" because that would imply it could travel anywhere between Earth and the Moon, including out to Lagrange Points 4 and 5. That would be *really* useful, for people who have business interests in Earth's orbit, the Moon's orbit, or anywhere close by either. Oh, and Lake Winnipesaukee is a real place. It's the largest lake in New Hampshire, and lots of the communities are resorts for wealthy people from the northeastern part of the United States. I don't think any of the summer mansions, up there, have space launch facilities. Yet. 😁
