When I was in HS I had a friend whose Father worked for NY Central onboard a tug in the Hudson River who took us out one night up & down the river. It was one of the last steam powered units. The counter weight was like a car… massive & the boat had 4 or 5 decks below the water line. What you see is only partial of the entire boat. That was a night I’ll never forget! Thank you. Very informative!

The tugs were on strike in 1980 in Melbourne, so the aircraft carrier CVS 21 HMAS Melbourne, performed what they call a pinwheel, they tied the Grumman Trackers to the deck and used the props and the ships steering to bring us along side, absolute brilliant to see as a an 18 year old from the bush

Whats tricky and challenging, and thats why during in port, each watch must have experienced 1st division petty officers on days powerful storms come in. I recall over 30 years ago when there was a US Naval base in Staten Island NY, there was a storm and parts of NYC was flooded, but check this out, the water risen so high that it was over a 1 feet of water above the pier. In a case like that the lines will need to be adjusted otherwise the ship will have pitch on its side because the overly rising tide caused by the storm. I was on USS Donald B Beary FF 1085 and we were one of 2 ships at that base, and the other was the Badass USS Normandy CG-60. The Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers were just being built ..and I recall seeing one from a distance while in Naval Station Norfolk . The officer of the Deck ( Watch) should know these things ( what I described above) just in case 2nd class and above 1st division petty officer is not around, for some reason.

Modern ports have specialized equipment and Tugs made to deal with large ships. It's not a big deal if everyone does their job and the equipment is in proper shape.

@@justsayingforafriend7010 What’s up BOATS, I was in 1st division back in the day . Man those were the days standing with the dungarees, Dixie cup hat, button down stenciled shirt, making sure my gig line is right, standing Fwd, Aft, Helmsman, Lee Helmsman, Lookout while underway.
