when ever i find a video or an article about F-23...i always have a strong feeling that its a 6th gen fighter or may be at least they modify it to be a 6th gen fighter ...the basic outer design looks really very different than the fighters that existed at that time ...and I believe even in the internals it is a whole lot different

Very nice and informative video. Really enjoyed watching, very crisp and precise information. I, too liked YF 23 more on its technical capabilities. It was way ahead of F 22 in many aspects. Just few glances at history. YF 23 was designed and developed by consortium of Northrop Grummen and Macdonald Douglas. And YF 22 by Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and Boeing. As rightly said by Defence Matrix, team of YF22 had good contacts with influential people in Pentagon. Mandate given to both team was - 1. Low observability (stealth)- Frontal and Lateral, supressed infrared signature. 2. Supercruise without afterburner. 3. Data centric warfare. In all these aspects YF23 was ahead. Their design team was best, they had planned tailless delta, but settled on Pelikan tail. In my opinion even today YF 23 is relevant. Thanx Defence Matrix for visiting pages of history.

Thanks to your comment I get to know about a wonderful weapon system called Cheyenne AH-56 .. A heavy duty attack Heli which can fly not only at high altitude but at very low altitude (almost at tree tops heights) and that even at around half the speed of sound (equivalent to ww2 aircrafts speeds)... It was a wonderful system and was ahead of it's time.. I do think that HAL LCH have some structural similarities with AH-56 .. Well I can be over thinking but it's really was ahead of it's time..

It was all down to lobbying......people often compare F-22 to Yf-23 and say F22 is better but do not forget Yf-23 is not a complete aircraft it was a technology demostrator....so we should compare Yf-22 to the Yf-23......Yf-23 was a revolutionary design...even though the spped of Yf-23 was less compared to Yf-22 but the Yf-23 was more stealthier...Yf-23 did not have TVC like Yf-22 but Yf-23 had remarkble IF signature reduction....

Far less weapons load and extremely high maintenance cost due to the complex architecture and heat exchangers at the back...... Larger footprints as well (not RCS)..... There were a lot of factors other than "Lobbying" that went against YF23..... These were to serve in numbers and not "Exclusively" as B2's and B52's...... There's always an economy factor driving the decisions...... Can't put a blind eye for the same.... Northrop specializes in stealth for exclusive aircrafts only, that philosophy doesn't hold good for mass produced backbone fighters....

Apart from lobbying 2 minor things went against yf23.. 1. Weapons bay design which was vertical. 2. Front IR signature... Engine blade was visible in yf23 but it had better rear stealth than f22.

There were 2 YF-23s for the test flights. One was named black widow and other was grey ghost. Many articles and former engineers and designers of the same jet claim that the jet was almost better than the YF-22, but the crash turned the table in favour of YF-22. Technically, it wasn't a crash but fault that could lead to a major crash, but still..., that was all that Lockheed Martin needed to push YF-22.

A 4th generation aircraft with little upgrade is called 4+ generation and 4.5 generation means a aircraft with totally brand new or some modified avionics,radar, modified cockpit, new or modified engnine, etc which is much more superior to a 4+ generation. This type of aircraft have the capability to detect the 5th generation aircraft and engage with it. But in the easy method a "+"means 0.25, So 4+ means = 4.25 and 4++ = 4.5 that's all. 😂😂😂😂😂😉
