The Failure of Movie Studio Theme Parks - What Happened?

Millions of people a year visit theme parks to escape the realities of everyday life, so it's no surprise that most revolve around themes of fantasy and adventure, drawing on already established literary and cinematic genres for inspiration. This idea has remained at the heart of most theme parks, allowing us, the guests, to travel through time and space to both real and imagined destinations. However, the late 1980s saw the start of a deviation from this norm, which would continue into the following decade. Many companies began to abandon the immersion of story-like settings in favor of a new concept. That concept revolved around the industry of movie making.

I actually miss movie making attractions. I've always loved the behind the scenes aesthetics of the lights and scaffolding etc. Since as a kid i wanted to be a filmmaker.

I feel pretty much the same way & would credit Hollywood Studios & Universal with making me interested in filmmaking as a kid! But sadly the theme became tired and out dated for many pretty quick! Thanks for watching!

Movie studio theme parks were such a weird concept in retrospect, they kinda straddle the line between museum and theme park but don't fully commit to one or the other, so they end up kind of being neither. They're too museum-y to really work as a fun theme park, but they're also too theme park -y to be a good educational experience about filmmaking. I think the concept would work best if it was done more like a living history museum, with a staff of re-enactors doing interactive demonstrations on the making of iconic scenes from classic movies.

I completely agree! They were too boring for a theme park and not educational enough to teach about the industry! I think the best version of the concept is probably Universal Studios Hollywood’s tram tour, which does a good job of explaining movie making whilst remaining pretty exciting! But no other attempts seemed to ever be able to recreate this! Thanks for watching!

I think cgi happened. In the times of practical effects, we all wondered how did they do that. But today we all know that there is a greenscreen and if the cgi looks rushed, then there is even less interest in movie making. I think the main downfall of the movie parks is that there is an oversaturation of them. It was a shortlived trend and today movie-making would be something for a museum.

Hard disagree. Just because CGI is involved doesn't mean practical effects are no more. In fact most blockbuster movies such as Top Gun Maverick, Oppenheimer, and Fast and Furious do A LOT of practical stunts and mostly only use CGI for backgrounds, and object replacement. The video is correct on this one, people don't need to wonder how something was done because the movie has bonus features to tell you how it was done

The development of CGI effects definitely had some impact. I think the Kong section of Universal Hollywood’s tram tour shows perfectly why explaining CGI doesn’t lend itself to a movie park! It just isn’t as interesting and there’s not much you can do with it for a theme park attraction!

Yeah, most of the practical effects showcased at movie parks are still used today! But, the mystery and intrigue is no longer there!
