Naoki Yoshida (A.K.A Yoshi P) was a Godsend, he managed to make 1.0 playable and even somewhat fun! I don't know how he did it but I think was his "gamer" nature that made it possible to find ways to make lemonade our of that sack of "lemons" he was dealt. I love that man.
@goblinrat6119

Yeah. It's pretty amazing when you look at what he had to work with. Imagine getting something like this dropped on your desk and then having to fix it. Nobody would have been surprised if the game was just allowed to die, like usually happens. I'm really happy Yoshi P put his honest to god best effort into it, and that the effort was really, really good. When you look at the interviews and his appearances in general, it's easy to see he really cares about what he's doing. The man has passion for this game, and it really shows.

Yoshida drew some inspiration from his long-lasting enthusiasm for MMORPGs, having played such titles as Ultima Online, EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, Rift, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2.[6][9] As a result of his direction, reviewers and commentators have credited Yoshida with "rescuing" the Final Fantasy XIV project.[10][11][12][13] SE had the right person to fix the game, he had played a LOT of western MMOs and knew the pros and cons of them so he used all that knowledge to fix FFIV which was stuck back in 2002!!!

Yoshi P is overrated. All the fixes 2.0 made could have been done by the original team. The initial disaster that was 1.0 was because of the shitty time constraints and rush job imposed on the XIV team.

I remember playing beta, getting out into the first area, getting level 5 and going "Man, this is probably the worst MMO I've ever played" and quit shortly afterwards. For ages, I've wondered why I hated the game, but the memories are flooding back - 'thanks' to you.

It's always amazes me that they managed to salvage such a terrible product. Well, not just salvage it, but also turn it into one of the best and most popular MMOs out there. Yoshi P has to be commended, truly. Especially with how broken 1.0 was. A lot of the game design just doesn't make sense. Sounds absolutely awful.

Yoshida is the shining example of why the game director needs to fully understand a genre before making it. Player first, game developer second.

Honestly, whenever I see Yoshi-P, I get teary-eyed. It's so clear when you see him in many interviews and other public appearances that he cares very much about this game, and that he put in a lot of effort in reinvigorating/fixing it (results are apparent). I wish I could speak with him without the language barrier. It was great to see him at Fan Fest.

There is actually a point in the ARR main story that if you go to the Waking Sands, into that storage/hangout area, you'll see Urianger sitting with Y'shtola and he's wearing his 1.x Arcanist staff. The same staff model was re-used for the Gnath, one of their number is holding it when taking your character and Ysale to meet Ravana.

The most frustrating thing at the time was how much the hardcore FFXI fanboys (and I did play FFXI for seven years so I was hardly a stranger) defended every single one of these terrible design decisions on the forums. We can look back and laugh now, but it's almost understandable how badly things turned out when the dev team and those hardcore fans were stuck in their own bubble completely ignoring how gaming had changed since FFXI came out. It really is remarkable how Yoshi-P turned things around.

I saw the opposite. As a hardcore XI player at the time, I trashed XIV's initial launch for all its shortcomings. Hell you couldn't even invite people unless they were next to you. You also couldn't see party members on your map. And the lack of an AH was just inexcusable.
@OJtheLIONKing
@OJtheLIONKing 7 жыл бұрын
I did the same, and so did my friends who jumped to XIV. The militant fanboy types, for lack of a better label, were the loudest on the forums for a long time though. It happens in every community but it was especially bad in this case where everyone outside the group could see it was obviously not good.

And look on the bright side, they didn't HAVE to listen to reason. Take EVE Online, for example. EVE's not done "badly", per se, but has never matched the heights of other MMORPGs, especially considering it never had much competition in its niche market. Countless voices, over the years, have told its developer, CCP, that what they need to do is make the game more broad and limit the effect of its overworld PVP. In fact, CCP has had the most success when straying from that PVP-based gameplay. Some 75% of its current population (a ratio that has remained relatively constant since launch) stays in high-security space. Enabling station-walking (that is, getting out of your ship and walking around) was added with plans to allow people to share areas in a way you'd think would be obvious by now. In fact, I think their most popular feature is something called a Sansha Incursion, a randomly-spawning mass-PVE event that sometimes ends up in the popular high-security space. So why haven't they gone forward with it? A very vocal niche of very hardcore fans are literally fighting any voice that hints that, perhaps, modern EVE isn't best suited to be built around its overworld PVP. The aforementioned station walking? The reason it never turned into a true open world experience is because that vocal EVE base decried it as completely useless, and raked CCP over the coals for "wasting their time". The Sansha Incursions? The last time I was on and visiting the forums, those same players were similarly scourging CCP because everyone was just waiting for the Incursions to spawn in high-security space. The rest of space, some 60-75% of the universe, was becoming relatively barren and the core vocal group was yelling at CCP to introduce means to force high-security-based players into space with mandatory open world PVP, or to allow them more freedom to disrupt them in high-security space. EVE's been around a long time and has had millions of players, but never really a massive concurrency. They've got one, massive server which has never, in the time I've watched, risen high above 70k players. The population has steadily declines as space-based MMORPGs, especially faster ones with better PVP, have come and bitten chunks out of their market share. Recently, the game went free-to-play in desperation, which from all accounts has done nothing to help the population. So count your blessings. SquareEnix could have gone the CCP route, afraid to alienate its comfortable core audience, even if they were small in number, because of their vocal criticism. Instead, they listened to reason, and we got a better game for it. It takes a LOT to admit that not only are you wrong, but your most ardent supporters are also wrong. I give SE a lot of credit for that; that's a huge gamble and for them it paid off.

Your video series brings back painful and hilarious memories (I'm a player from the launch of 1.0). Great job so far! :) I was really hoping that you would go into the other 1.0 content that drove people crazy: crafting and gathering. Crafting had a skimpy system with minimal commands, and no way of knowing how to HQ, how durability was lost, or how progress would be made before executing a command. Gathering, on the other hand, had a terribly frustrating mini-game that, if done correctly, would reward you with a RANDOM item, and a RANDOM % chance at being HQ, which made it completely unpredictable and you could spend hours trying to get the item you wanted. Both mini-games are playable in ARR's Gold Saucer. Are you planning on mentioning these elements in episode four?

For someone who got into XIV with 2.0, hearing about Limsa being the most convoluted city is plain bizarre. For me, Limsa is the most navigable of the starter places, prolly down to that aetheryte plaza right next to the strip mall. On the flipside, Ul'dah is something I just can't get my head around. Even with the aetheryte points, it's hard to find what I need sometimes. Also, woooow those cutscenes look super good compared to the current ones. Prolly because the new story quest has more meat on its bones.

From the gamplay I've seen, 1.0's story quests weren't just so much less but every story instance was a cutscene. It's not like 2.0 (or even 1.23) where some of the story is done just by talking to an NPC and moving on, but entirely within cutscenes which was not very much.

There was a search system added much, much later in 1.0's life. But all it told you was the /name/ of the retainer, and you still had to find it in the sea of Retainers. I will say however, as a legacy player who stuck with this game through everything from its opening (as I was a poor sap that bought a CE version) to its day of closure (as I was there when the servers finally shutdown). It was, in fact, a wild ride. I even remember when the previous director wrote an apology to everyone and that him stating to all of us that he was stepping down. Then Yoshi P, as you bring up in the video, stepping up and then, well-- I'm sure you'll cover that in your next video... which is when we all go to the inn Room one day, sleep in our beds, to wake up to a /wonderful/ nightmare cutscene. :3

When I first saw this series, I misread it as "rise and fall", and I was thinking wait what? FFXIV is doing great now. I didn't start playing until early 2015, so I didn't have any experience with 1.0, though I had heard about it. Then I realized, it said "fall and rise". The only things I know about the 1.0 storyline are the references in Realm Reborn. I think a recap of the 1.0 story would be great. I did watch one at one point, but the person doing it rambled a lot and it was very hard to follow.

When all this went down, I heard such interesting things from my friends who played FFXI (who I used to play with, but I had quit XI). Keep in mind, XIV was made by many of the people who made XI so that it was so overall BAD is mind-boggling. But when they went off to make XIV, the people who came in to help XI did a lot of things the players loved. A lot of restrictions were lifted and while many people eventually felt XI went off the rails later, there were already signs that maybe these devs weren't actually the best they had to choose from.

Oh dear, the retainer shop system is a real throwback. MMOs from the 2000's (of which I remember Silkroad and Cabal Online) would only allow *your character* to set up a shop somewhere and you'd have to go and hunt what you wanted like in a bazaar. Having an NPC that would have your shop active while you actually play would have been an improvement! The guys who first implemented auction houses in MMOs should receive more recognition.

An important note in leveling early in the game, is the fun part, (which was INCREDIBLY fun) was going through mid level ares (monsters were actually really scary) with a group of 24-36 people, and burning entire halls and rooms of monsters with a team. Really fun, the BAD PART, the teeth grinding lava enima painful part, was that if your weapon was low durability or broken, you recieved UP TO 10% normal exp, (THEY NEVER TELL YOU THIS). And exp was randomly generated on attack (mages could only exp as long as they had mana, which was about 10 spells). And beyond that, it would take over 12 hours to gain 1 level after level 8.... (farmed all day before work, all night after, gained about half a level). There were merits that i would never replace as it had a few things that made it more enjoyable than any other mmo, but otherwise the flaws outweighed the posatives. :/ P.S. Really enjoy your content!

Thanks so much for making these videos! I need more of these! I've had some fun conversations with some of my 1.0 player friends. They say that you have been actually very nice, and it was much more terrible than you portrayed it.

First off: yes I am ABSOLUTELY interested in a full story recap. Second: I didn't start playing 14 until after ARR, but I'm feeling some real bile fascination for the original game. I kinda wish there was a way to check it out just so I could get it out of my system...

No wonder Yoshi P always looks like he aged so much in the past 5 years. I can't wait to hear you guys talk about how the revamp was achieved. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into it.

I have to say - these videos are of amazing quality! As someone who loves ARR/HW i've always been so curious as to what 1.0 was like, and just what it was like, not because I think it was in any way superior to what we have now but almost...morbid curiosity lol. I would quite like to see a review video on the 1.0 story - I actually did some research and made a summary video myself of a play through I watched of the 1.0 story on my channel, but a lot of the detail is missing as I just wasn't there so I would love to fill in those blanks. But keep up with these videos they simply amazing - you're great at presenting them in an interesting, entertaining but also funny way which is no small achievement!

Woo I remember a couple of the players in those clips! I played with Jerbird and Shadowskill on Selbina/Ridill till the end. Great series so far.

CharlemagneIfrit Hey, this is Jerbird. I remember you from Ridill. I remember partying up in the old 1.0 shroud. I'm on Excalibur now. Which server did you move to, Charlemagne? I recognized your name. lol

HI Jerbird! I'm on Sargatanas now, haven't logged in for ages though. Most of our LS moved there from Ridill, not many of us left now. Altinius Sohmeti and Heather Licious quit, Charlie Xenn moved to Ragnarok, dunno what happened to Shadow Skill. I think most old the old Ridill crowd went to either Balmung or Scally, one or two stayed on Ridill. Best two servers were Ridill and Selbina, only one that didn't have a server merge if I remember right. I may have an alt on Scally so might come say Hi some time.

this series is great and I have played since launch of 1.0. I really wish someone would have warned me about starting in the black shroud area though and yes I did have to walk all over that place. Waiting for the gathering and crafting thing to come up. Keep up the good work and can't wait for the next episode.

I was really seriously contemplating getting into 1.0 but since of the time I was both at home and not working, I didn't get a chance. I remember I had only seen the trailers and got super excited for it. Later I got into the ARR beta on PS3 and finally joined up for a solid few months around the time HW came out. Good times ever since.

I never played relase version of game because of ridiculously high subscription cost added up with every new char or retainer, but I had played beta and the worst thing as i recall was crafting system where you had to guess crafting materials by the look of finished gear and guess your progress only by the color of a shiny sphere. And you could start the game as crafer class sic.

Retainers and Ward weren't around during launch. We largely relied upon the NPC merchants, that had nearly no equipment, or we had to find a crafter to make even basic equipment. (no NPCs sold shields for example.)

A story series would be awesome. The little footage in here with all the NPCs is so cool, I recognize them from ARR! Would love to see what they were like in 1.0.

Seeing these videos, it's AMAZING how badly Square screwed up. It seriously feels like NOBODY in the development team had ever even played an MMO. Every fact I hear about 1.0 sounds like a bad joke you'd make up if you wanted to describe some sort of a monstrously bad parody of a functional MMO. At the same time, it's even more amazing how Naoki Yoshida (and his team, of course) managed to save all that. Sure, they had to LITERALLY destroy it and build it up again, but still. And I'm seriously happy they managed to bring about this rebirth. I picked up FFXIV about a month ago, and it's just amazingly good, from so many perspectives. I don't usually like MMOs, but I love this one. As a game, it feels really fun to play. As a Final Fantasy game, it made me realize I still have goodwill for the franchise and it's managed to rekindle my old nostalgia. Hell, for the first time in a really long time, I actually feel positive about Square Enix. Thank you Yoshi P, your game's already given me a whole lot of good feels.

You COULD ride chocobos in a later patch, starting with rentals, and then personal chocobos. But it's important to remember also that before chocos, and in all of 1.0 in fact...there was no dash. So that on foot treck would be entirely in normal run speed, unless you have the special pre-order bonus shoes which could let you dash like for 5 minutes every hour or something. Also, the main story also got much better and genuinely pretty awesome in later patches. In addition to the story there were real time events played by mods where an NPC from the story would show up at a camp or town and act out a scene and interact with the players.

Really love this video series! Great job. I was not around for 1.0 but i've played XIV since 2.1. Seeing what came before ARR is really mindblowing. You are a very charming narrator too! Looking forward to episode 4!

The standard cutscenes in 1.0 look a lot nicer than ARR in terms of animation. I appreciate how ARR's cutscenes are animated using the same emotes players can use, but that also makes the scenes look really stilted. 1.0's look a lot smoother and, at times, even more expressive. Also, I would absolutely love a video summary of 1.0's story! It'd be really nice for an ARR-only player like me who's trying to write their character lore-friendly.

I was stationed in Okinawa when this came out and remember my friends telling me to stay away from this title. Was pretty let down at the time as I enjoyed FFXI but glad it was reborn.
