The fact that Yoshida had the balls to not just remake the game from scratch, but to end the world as a way to transition is something we'll probably never see happen again.

@IkariLoona8 жыл бұрын
He'd feel more loveable if I didn't get the nagging impression he's trying to push XI to its death - XIV's relaunch was successful, and the money from XI's subscriptions helped make that possible, but the dramatic effect of it was that everyone only paid attention to and praised Yoshida, and he was made head of SE's online game division, which superficially makes sense, but now he was running a department in charge of multiple games, one of which he was and is heavily associated with, so when it's time to make financial and promotional decisions, where do you think the money goes? While XIV was doing poorly it was possible to have a discounted joint subscription for both XI and XIV, but after ARR was well established, that option was removed and never reinstated, although it's not uncommon for XIV players to finish playing through the story in new updates, then play XI for a while. XIV gets to have discounted subscription prices if you play for multiple months at a time, but no such option is available for XI, although based on the past joint subscription system and the common billing structure it implies it should be possible. Right now it's more expensive to play the older FF MMO than it is to play the newer one, which makes very little sense - even if XI has a huge amount of content, graphically its age is starting to show, and there's a much smaller dev team working on it nowadays, mostly working on things like new battle content and small quests, so it's not likely to be costing SE a whole lot to keep up compared to how much they're charging. There's also the case of Dragon Quest X, which is unlikely to ever be localized - it'll be on the Nintendo Switch, which is region-free, but there's still no word on whether it'll actually be translated, and there's certainly some interest out there. I sincerely worry about Yoshida trying to make "his" game the only one that's meant to survive at SE at the expense of the other games. While he helped to deal with a lot of issues with Tanaka's mismanagement of the XIV project (something XI also suffered from for a long time, mind you), I fear for the short-sightedness he may have from focusing on "his" game, and the amount of self-promotion he indulges in along the way (getting himself included in the game, now featured in illustrations...). I guess I also miss some interesting ideas XIV 1.x did have, like the ability to progress through the main story as a crafting class through the parlay system, or the division between physical level and class level. It would be interesting to see it revised as a single-player game that would serve as a prequel to the current online game - the assets exist, and there was a lot of interesting and fun dialogue that didn't make it to the cutscenes some have posted on KZbin, which I'd like to still see available somewhere. I suspect, however, that a considerable amount of Yoshida's professional and personal self-image may ride on seeing himself as a saviour from something irredeemably flawed, where there were some interesting qualities in the game that he replaced - it'd be a shame to see those lost forever.

I agree with Loona though. Sure Yoshida deserves credit for the awesome things he did but at the same time, he shouldn't get all of the credit. The failure of 1.0 opened up everyone's eyes and forced all of the devs to go in a new direction. It took the effort of everyone to make ARR what it is not just Yoshida.

A small thing, but there were a series of player polls that were conducted very shortly after Yoshida took the helm and opened the official forums - these helped justify the new direction that the game took withe the 1.x updates, and eventually 2.0.

Love it! Something I wanted to add about crafting back in 1.0 was that if you got your progress to 100% at the same turn your durability fell to 0, you failed the synthesis.
@LilBoyHexley2 жыл бұрын
This is one of those stories where everything turned out to be a good thing in the end (not for the dev team, unfortunately, but for the game). It’s a good thing that the 1.0 release was a rushed, buggy, mess because I do think many of its flaws really were endemic to it’s actual design. If the game wasn’t so royally messed up we likely would have never ended up with 2.0. But a properly functioning game with the design ethos of 1.0. I guess some people may like this, but 2.0 is designed with a completely different (and much preferred to me) design philosophy. And 1.0 needed to utterly fail in order to make that change happen.

Wow, I actually really like the 1.x "Touch Up" thing at the end of crafting. I wouldn't mind that part being re-added to the game.

@kayonesoft8 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It's a little bit different. I've botched some crafts a few times because I was trying to touch up the quality and misjudged the amount of progress I could make in a single action, thus running out of durability. Being able to finish the progress of a craft then dump any remaining durability into quality without the fear of losing the craft would be an ease of mind.

I remember huddling with members of my linkshell (yes, before FC's that's all we had) around a campfire watching Dalamud fall on the night they shut the servers down. We shared so many memories of trying to make our way through with all the problems the game had. I love this series but i think its so important that you note that during the server changes it was truely a separation of servers, jps largely went to their own servers and na/eu servers were born. We had gigantic parties in uldah to say our farewells in the parting. For true XI players this was a massive step as up until this point we had always been amalgamated into the jp servers. going it alone with only NA's was challenging at times especially for those of us who were ingrained into the blended servers.

I loved the crafting system on XI and the crafting gathering on the first XIV. It was complicated and you felt a sense of accomplishment on a successful craft! Also, is it possible that you had more lag in the U.S.? I live in Europe and I don't remember it being so catastrophically laggy as you describe it, at least not for the gathering and crafting, which I really enjoyed. Ofc you need rivets and leather and plates to make a shield, not just click an ingot or wooden log in a window and a shield magically appears, like every other MMo again

The game is amazing but the community is extremely toxic just like all mmos. If you're a brand new player expect to be bitched at for not knowing how to do certain dungeons and what not. Pretty much why I stay away from mmos and went back to console games. So many stuck up asshats that don't care to help out new players and just bitch at you if you do something wrong.

This comment puzzles me. I have always felt like FFXIV has one of the best communities out there. Sure there are the occasional bad apples, but overall FFXIV, to me, has a very friendly community!? We might have just been lucky with our data center and server, but usually when a new players enters a dungeon, people get happy cause they get tomestone bonuses for it, and we have mentors that are there to help you! Also, getting a nice helpful Free Company helps a lot too, if you're worried about entering a dungeon for the first time alone.
