Rossiter is a amazing actor. The speech proves this

I think Rossiter must really be a cat lover! Because as Perrin and Rigsby (in Rising Damp) he's always holding and talking to a cat!

It's also a great way to create sympathy for the character, showing effection to a pet , take the edge of a character a bit

Believe it or not there are many like him. Coping with middle age and life's stress sometimes become more than they can bare.

My favourite episode. Reggie's speech is Shakespearian.

5 episodes before he does it. Wasn't this maddeningly slow? and not much time he spends in his disappeared life.

No. Fantistically well-paced. Comedy is controlled tension. The whole point of this sitcom is to show his gradual mental deterioration -- and his gradual awareness that the rational world of work and family is absurd and he doesn't have to abide it any more. It is the best sitcom ever made, by a mile.

I think it's to do with avoiding the copyright detection.

Just watch them through a mirror. Other newspapers are available.
