This series takes elements of A LOT of Edgar Allan Poe's shorts stories and poems, not just The Fall of the House of Usher. And I mean, A LOT, there are references, quotes, names, little details and easter eggs literally everywhere. For the sake of the storytelling each episode is named after and based on the structure of a single Poe short story, with tons of other elements thrown in to "bulk" it up, which include references to Poe's real life (take some characters names for example: Eliza was the name of Poe's mother, William Longfellow was the name of a writer Poe had some professional differences with, Griswold was a literary critic who was Poe's lifelong 'nemesis' etc). This entire series is a long and complex love letter to Edgar Allan Poe's work, life and legacy. It's well excuted enough that you can absolutely enjoy it without having read Poe's works, but you've read them, then it just becomes mind-blowingly genius.

Flanigan has a sort of interesting solution to that "adaptation problem" you bring up (stay close to the source material or stray). His adaptations aren't adaptations -- they're remixes. They take ideas, quotes, details, character names, etc. and tell a new story with them. One problem this solves is that neither the original nor the remix spoils the other -- they actually enhance each other because you can catch all the "ah, I see what they did there!" moments.

I have been a huge Poe fan since high school and I binged the entire thing in 2.5 days. when I tell you that I was on the edge of my seat for every single episode until it came to a very satisfying conclusion...I'm not telling a single lie! I'm not sure if you guys are fans of Mike Flanagan's work but this is the 5th series he's done for Netflix and while his third series (Midnight Mass) has been my favorite thus far, The Fall of the House of Usher has quickly come to be up there as a new fave. everything about it, from the acting to the writing to the cinematography is just top tier. Flanagan likes to work with the same actors, and with good reason. he always picks top tier performers and they have all showcased their amazing chops in this series. after you're done with this one, I highly recommend going back to the beginning and watching all of Flanagan's series, starting with The Haunting of Hill House, and see what makes him such an amazing horror writer and director. I'm so hyped to see you guys get into this one! 😃

Once I heard "Get your meds!" you had me subscribed. Thank you for a GREAT reaction! Thank you for your reaction. Mike Flanagan has done it again. This is a masterpiece, another in his adaptations. He has honored, truly honored Edgar Allan Poe. Some things to keep in mind while watching this episode: Roderick (Bruce Greenwood, originally Frank Langella) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) are two characters from Poe's 1839 short story, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. As in this Netflix series, they are brother and sister in the original work. John gave a very scholarly and wise observation, btw. A close reading of Poe's work suggests that there is something incestuous going on between the pair. A careful viewing of the series strongly vibes with this, EXTREMELY SUBTLE though it is. Note how they sleep in the same bed from youth--not necessarily demanding this! People in poverty and other cultures have to make things work with scarcity and that doesn't DEMAND incest. But keep watching the series with this in mind. Knowing this aspect John brings up helps viewers to better understand the dynamics between them. The Great Carl Lumbly plays Le Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin, the protagonist of three works by Poe: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841), "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" (1842), and "The Purloined Letter" (1844). The first of these works is the first detective story we know of--Poe created that genre. Without C. Auguste Dupin there would be no Sherlock Holmes from Arthur Conan Doyle and no Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie. So it's no exaggeration to say also that without Edgar Allan Poe, there is no Batman or DC (Detective Comics). The mysterious character named Verna (Carla Gugino) has an interesting name. It is an anagram referring to perhaps the most famous poem of Poe's: VERNA RAVEN

If you watched the Haunting of Bly Manor it was sort of a medley of Henry James stories and this is a medley of Edgar Allan Poe stories! Each episode is named after a story and uses lots of elements and references all mixed together! 😍

Another grand slam home run from Flanagan. This series was full of twists and extremely entertaining carnage and mayhem. Midnight Mass was brilliant but House of Usher is truly a masterpiece.

I love horror/psychological thriller stuff, so Flanagan meets Edgar Allen Poe is right up my alley. 😂 The Haunting of Hill House was the first thing to legit creep me out and give me jump scares is many, many years. I live near my parents, and it’s sort of a ritual for my mom to come over a couple of nights a week for us to watch something together. Mother-daughter time. We just started The Fall of the House of Usher (I’ve binged it on my own ☺️), and she gets creeped out leaving my house in after dark. LOL.
