Being a FFXIV player since day one of 2.0, and sarting out on PS3 as well as taking part in the PS3 beta, I will say that yes the PS3 definitley held back some of the potential for FFXIV and had some technical limitations that caused quite a bit of grievances. This is a clear example of why YoshiP is beloved by fans of FFXIV all over because of his dedication he provides to the players of this great MMO. Players were promised a PS3 version and he intended to provide it even if there had to be technical limitations. Even with the launch of the PS4 version, they continued to provide support for the PS3 version to appease the fanbase and those PS3 gamers that have yet to upgrade to a PS4. Having played on PS3 till the game finally came out on PS4, I have personally experienced the dreaded loading and lag issues, especially the night that is Odin and Behemoth, I am glad that the PS3 has finally been phased out in favor of improving the game more. But we still can't discount that the PS3 version was a stepping stone on it's own and it helped as a bridge to bring more MMOs to consoles to this day.
@DarkBowser646 жыл бұрын
Yoshi-P and others mentioned in an interview after the fact that another of the biggest issues when designing content with the PS3 in mind were the loading times. The RAM was just as big of a factor, but if you could stream data off the hard drive or storage media quickly enough, it wouldn't be as big of an issue as it was (city-states would have not needed to be divided into two as they were if they could just stream the assets off the HDD quickly enough). But the PS3 had an ESPECIALLY slow drive interface--that meant that unless you upgraded to an SSD, the game would always load incredibly slowly off the HDD, so they had to design how large dungeons were, how many textures were usable in a specific area, texture sizes, and more specifications *specifically around the PS3's loading times* so that they would never take too long. And in some cases it wasn't even enough. The more people in an area, the slower it would load by an order of magnitude longer, making you miss your 45 second timer for your queue because your duty popped while you were loading into Idyllshire, which was always full of people to bog down your loading times. Don't even ask about hunts or Odin. Even empty zones like Azys Lla would take at least half a minute to load on a standard built-in PS3 HDD, and they also mentioned that they had to reduce the amount of interactable NPCs and other such things in Heavensward zones because they needed to stream the data for such things directly off the hard drive even while flying. The game ran at an average frame rate of 20FPS, sometimes at 30 FPS, but other player characters and all NPCs besides you, except in cutscenes, ran at half that frame rate or less. They always looked like slideshows. I once teleported within the same zone in Coerthas Central to Camp Dragonhead and it took 10 seconds for Camp Dragonhead to load in even after I got out of the loading screen, because only the very inner walls were modeled in the distance model. I wasn't even sure what I was looking at. Unlike the PS4 version where you could use M&K OR Controller, PS3 version had only controller (with keyboard strictly for typing only) because it did not have enough RAM to display the keyboard hotbars on your screen whatsoever. If you wanted to focus target an enemy, your experience bar would disappear completely while Focus Target was active. That's how strict the RAM was for HUD elements. It was impressive that they got the game running on that thing to begin with, but it needed to be put down.
@Kisai_Yuki6 жыл бұрын
Let's hope the PS5 and any final iteration of the PS4 comes with a class 50 NVMe HDD so that loading times go away forever. Literately makes the loading time of everything 15X faster.

Bro, that Odin cape physics shit is amazing! I really hope they not only bring that back for Odin's outfit in a future update but add more cape physics gear sets to the game. I never saw that cape video before so it was neat to see that it was 100% doable and complete, but canceled because of the damn PS3. The PS3 was a necessary requirement for the game to bring in money and players at the time of the relaunch, so it was a necessary sacrifice for the time. Maybe someone can mention it to Yoshida and get someone on the team to patch it back in? Thanks again for the videos! Another great job!!!

On that note, maybe we can finally have ultra-long hair...? Please...?
@Leonesaurus19906 жыл бұрын
I think long hair should be doable, since several NPCs make it work. The only problem with the hair in comparison to the cape is that the hair clips through a lot of the clothing and armor and I've seen people complain about that a lot. Personally, I don't mind because you have to be ready to take the good with the bad with things like that. As long as everyone is ok with certain gear conflicting with longer hairstyles I don't see why it shouldn't be added in. Maybe they can do a poll and go from there if they're on the fence about it?
@cstaie856 жыл бұрын
So. Long hair and capes both cause clipping. Even certain gear now causes clipping in change pose. Or just in general. SE does a great job of trying to minimize clipping. I agree that I would love to see more longer hair styles. And PC has mods for it. As for capes... the PLD lv 70 artifact gear has a cape. It may not be as flamboyant as Odin, but it still has some physics and with the limited size does not interfere with clipping much. My biggest complaint about cloth physics is sleeves on robes... who thought it would be a great idea to make triangle sleeves and not make them bend... example is healer gear gear from Heavensward as the dravanian set.

The day I got my PS4 the first time odin spawned I ran there as fast as I could and was so happy I didn't have to turn off all the spell casting graphics and could finally actually tank him. It was a great day.

"Culling" (the removal of players and enemies on your screen due to a large number of them trying to appear at once) is still an issue in the game even in Stormblood. Even with the PS3 gone, Ixion and some S rank hunt mobs could still disappear from your screen due to the sheer number of players around. Rather than fix the problem, SE decided that adding different instances and capping them at ~150 players per instance, was a better solution. That leads me to believe it's a problem with the engine itself, and not something they could easily fix...

But Ishgard doesnt "add up" If you look at the map of how Ishgard is supposed to be arranged. Foundation of course at the bottom with the Pillars above, looking at the map, you can see the outline of the other area quite well. If you stand by the skywatcher by the aetheryte in Foundation and look up, eastwards what do you see? What you should see according to the map is Haillenarte Manor with the court of the Last Vigil, the delievery moogle should be pretty much over the aetheryte. You see nothing of the sort, you see skies above you. Of course wouldnt be pleasing if you just saw the bottom of the next area. Over by the Brume, look up, there should be the airship landing to the east, well the zone line to the pillars pretty much matches up with the zone line to the sea of clouds on the upper maps. Something not right with Ishgard there if you ask me. Compare that with the map of say Limsa... At the lower decks at the aetheryte look up and eastwards, you should see according to the map the bridges around bulwark hall... and guess what... that's exactly what you see. The map adds up. The lowerdecks match up with the upper decks. Same with Uldah. So if they were to implement a no loading seam in the city states. Ishgard will need some transformations. Stand from the gate of judgement up the first ramp right above you should be the central pedestal at the last vigil looking over the gate... but it's not. so you cant say "because the pillars are so high up" and even if they were, that's a lot of stairs one will have to climb. Again this is purely by looking at the map and how the pillars shadows are on the foundation map and vice versa. If Limsa and Uldah (the other multi-tiered states) match up to their maps... why not Ishgard? I mean that's proper nit picking. We can all just say "hey sod it, we can see why it was done like this and it's awesome anyway", if the Pillars were a little further northwards from foundation it could work. But map does suggest pillars is above foundation.

I remember discussion around the PS3 got fucking toxic for awhile, part of that though is the differences between console and PC gamers. PC gamers will fight you to the death over half a pixels improvement and console gamers don't see the value in buying a $300 console for tp bars and larger inventories. Also I would like to mention that someone once told me that if I couldn't afford to spend $350 on a new hardware once every three years I had no business playing any video games at all, I just brought that up because that person is a dick and I'll bring it up at every opportunity. I think a lot of bitterness could've been avoided if Yoshida was willing to allow certain features to only be available on certain systems instead of trying to force parity. Imagine if... SE decided to visualize the render process and just send h.265 video to players screens (it would suck) but that would be strategically the best way to get a game on to every platform without having to design a client for each platform. Every year, Sony or Microsoft or some other big publisher pushes this because it means the end to piracy, and yet the ISP's won't play ball. We need fibre to every home for it to even be viable, and companies like Verizon and AT&T think they are going to get out of their rural broadband requirements by just putting everyone else on LTE (which has painfully more latency) and presently broadband is defined as 25Mbps by the FCC (despite earlier this year trying to roll it down to 10Mbps.) So if you want to game on a PS4, toaster or potato, streaming is the way to get the same experience when the PC goalposts move too far away, but then again, I don't imagine SE having a render farm of 2080 RTX's putting out 4Kp60 video for every player.

As an aside on the PS3 RAM discussion, it's important to be clear that the 256 VRAM was used only for video. This was in contrast to Xbox 360's shared memory system, where the developers could choose how much RAM to allocate to specific tasks. This means that the PS3 version actually had less than 256MB to work with since the OS and background tasks had to use some percentage of the non-VRAM pool. All things considered, it was impressive that they got it to even run in the first place, but it was good to have the limitations finally removed by ending PS3 support.

As far back as 2011 or 2012 Yoshi-P talked about that they tried the Luminous Engine and found it wasn't going to work for the MMO elements either. However, due to some of the same people working on both, he did say that you could in some ways consider them "sister engines" and that's probably what kicked off the rumor that they use the Luminous Engine.

We are do have capes for players, namely the ones from HW dungeons and the likes, but they just don't have that crazy nice physics we see in the video here :x

I was one of the many that had started the game on the PS3 and boy it was the loading times that really hampered my experience with the game. Pratoreum was a nightmare on the PS3. I upgraded to PS4 as soon as it was available and have had no issues whatsoever. I kinda blame SE for holding on to PS3 support for so long. Unless there was some contractual agreement between Sony and SE there was no reason for keeping the platform. Especially since the PS4 was on its way. It must be some Japanese honor system to keep the promise of supporting it on PS3 cause it was initinally announced for it but due to 1.0 failure that put a damper on the game. Now there are rumbles of a Switch version, and although the Switch has more RAM there is no way you can play this on the go due to storage limitations. If there is a Switch version is the talk of 'holding back' the game going to return?

Yeah died alot on ps3, lag was bad too. By time i saw mob ability i was already hit. Only playable as dps and only open world or simple dungeons. Tried tank once, just stood there unable to move while group shouted at me. Fun times.

Damn you PS3. I want capes! Real capes. PS3 is gone, give us something like that Odin cape again. Great video! Great series.
@MechaMan20123 жыл бұрын
A video like this is a great response to the fallacy that all a new console does it make things prettier, or the sentiment of "I don't know why they made (insert game name here) next-gen exclusive, this could VeRY eAsiLY rUn oN oLd HarDWaRe".
@SparkleSporks6 жыл бұрын
I'm really confused. You show clips of PS3 and P and the PS3 side being slow and laggy, but.... I never had that. My PS3 never lagged on cutscenes, chat logs, battles, movement, or anything! The only thing my PS3 lagged with the game was loading areas or into/out of dungeons, trials and duties. Friends on the PS4 loaded quicker than me, but that was it.
@SpeakersNetwork6 жыл бұрын
What you're seeing in the side-by-sides is not actual lag, but the major difference in frame rate. The PS3 was locked at 30 fps (and would for the most part dip below that). When compared to PC's 60+ and the PS4's 60 fps, it really shows how bad it was. Important to note as well is that the PS3 ran at 720p, and not 1080p like the PC and PS4. That's why it also looks more washed out.
@SparkleSporks6 жыл бұрын
@@SpeakersNetwork ah yes, the washed out look I defo noticed. Just never felt like the game itself to me was slow like it was shown here. It proberly was, but I never had it bad enough to notice I guess lol
@NichSchoepfer6 жыл бұрын
@@SparkleSporks If you only every played on the PS3, you would not notice it because you would have nothing with which to compare it.
@SparkleSporks6 жыл бұрын
@@NichSchoepfer Actually, my girlfriend played on the PS4 while I was stuck on the PS3, we both played in the same room next to each other. The only difference I saw was she loaded into zones/instances/cutscenes before i did. That was it. She also had "clearer" graphics than me, but I'm also stuck on a tiny TV that's really old, so even now on a PS4, I still can't see much HDness differences lol Seriously, I never saw any of this "lag" that played during battles or cutscenes like they showed here. I always just got annoyed that it took so long to load into somewhere, moreso when there was a lot of players.

without the ps3 though , the game wouldn't be the success it is today. it was important. at the time the ps3 had a userbase of 80 million of potential buyers, which you simply couldnt ignore. it was 2013, the ps4 wasnt released yet, so NO ONE knew the ps4 would crush the competition in the following years by 3:1. if they had seen this coming they would have released it only for ps4 and pc. yoshida thanked ps3 players many times, as without their support the game wouldnt have been possible

oh god i think i'm too late to watch this and this surprises me, the odin armor outfit i didn't actually know until i watched this thank you, but this is surprising and no wonder i felt like the odin armor was like meh... why would they make it like something was a bit off for me so i don't bother buying it and the answer was here XD not gonna lie the armor with the cape was actually cool on another level
@melissas4874 Жыл бұрын
I wish more current players would watch this as it explains why there are still some things missing from the UI. They recently added the ability to see the time left on a a buff or debuff. Many have assumed that they only added this because PC players were using addons for this ability and bragged that PC player "forced their hands", but it sounds like they couldn't have it before due to the PS3 and just may have been slow to add. The thing with MMO players is they are always going to complain about something. If they focused on adding these numbers they would have complained if content was pushed back. I would rather have the content myself. And last? We are now in an age where a lot of people equate gaming power purely with GPU and having a 4k monitor - so thanks for reminding people that RAM matters and likely a lot more than most realize. 🙂
@shiro3146 Жыл бұрын
yep, RAM ANd VRAM were matters, its 2nd thing though after CPU And GPU In Processing power, but in overall PC Builds, nowdays RAM,VRAM,GPU,CPU and "Drive" were all interconnected

Even in Stormblood, the textures still aren't there yet. Looking at you, pixelation on the zoomed-in prima vista couch in cutscenes. Some of their textures look like they were from games 6 years old, it's kind of sad. Gameplay and story have definitely stayed engaging though.
@eriolo6 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the popularity its because they keep the ps3 support, a lot of players got the beta and stayed when it launched. Also what is holding back the game now is potato PC's and the 32bit client.

I'm starting to use a PS4 controller on my PC and as you switch from mouse to controller, the camera changes, probably due to PlayStation limitations, or it could just be me...but after hearing that the Odin cape was cut due to PlayStation, I now the reason why I can't fulfill my Black Knight cosplay from Fire Emblem Path of Radiance/Dawn RIP
@AceCat6 жыл бұрын
There is a setting to switch the way that controllers work in terms of the camera to work as it does with the mouse and vice versa, doesn't feel natural though... Best to leave the mouse and the controller camera settings as the are by default
@JrystalTyaeli6 жыл бұрын
Not really a console limitation but rather a limitation of controllers themselves, it's why FPS games on console have so many options to improve aiming for controllers.

I don't think that will be the case for a long time. the jump from 256 (usable) RAM to 8 GB is HUGE! And we'll hopefully see loads of big improvements in the years to come. The PS4 is nowhere near of holding the game back right now! \o/
