The whole reason Ghislaine ended up with Epstein was because she had nothing. The power that the family had effectively died in 1991 with Robert Maxwell's death and subsequent exposure for fraud.

I would not call it "betrayal". Robert Maxwell was very specific with his business, keeping almost every information for himself to decide what to do next etc. so he did not pass the burden to his family. At the end of his influence (and also his life), everything started to crumble down on him, he became a bit paranoid a wanted to open about the situation to his sons, which sadly led to his ultimate downfall and probably even his death (stroke or suicide followed by drowning). So he did not betray his sons or family, he just ultimately passed the whole misfortune and problems to his sons.
