I just rebuilt the carb on my Stihl string trimmer after watching your video. The thing still ran terrible. I pulled out the spark arrestor and it was completely blocked. Torched it. Tapped it. Reinstalled it and the trimmer works awesome. Should have started there but the diaphragm was a little bit crackly so it's a one two punch for the win. Thank you very much for your time.

Stihl chain saws have the same problem! My MS211 has been into the shop twice for this. After the second incident, I pressed the dealer for an answer. He paused, then reached for a needle-nose pliers, and pulled the spark-arrestor screen out. When I got home, it took me two Sols to calm down! I regret not knowing about your site sooner. You have provided the answers for two other problems with my equipment, so “Thanks” to you. Looking forward to all of your videos.....All the best.

I now clean my spark arrestors at least twice a year. I am a landscaper running my own business. But if anybody ever tells me that their Stihl is not running correctly and they start it and I know it is the spark arrestor I will take it and clean it and have a new machine!!!

I've yet to do it on the blower but with the Stihl line trimmer, I take the muffler out every year in winter and put it in the fire. It cooks clean and then gets painted black with stove pipe matt black paint and its as good as new. 18yrs now. Same with the chainsaw and from memory, I've removed this screen here on the blower all together. Great videos thanks..... Everyone you've made and I like your style.

Steve thank you for this video. I have a Stihl gas blower model 56. It would start, but when I pulled the trigger, the blower would not accelerate. I checked the spark plug , air filter, and fuel tank filter. I had replaced each item last year. I only use the blower once a week for about 20 minutes. After I finished checking the blower, it would not start. I had looked in the owner manual. It did mention about checking the spark arrestor. However, I did not see one. After watching your video I removed the exhaust port on the muffler and sure enough the spark arrestor was black and clogged with carbon deposits. I cleaned it with a wire brush and sprayed it with a carburetor cleaner. The blower started up immediately!

Had the same issue with my Stihl blower (BR430), spark screen & air filter were clean. Turned out to be moisture clogging the super fine fuel filter in the tank. Blew it out, changed fuel, now runs like it always did. I've never seen a fuel filter with such a super fine mesh on it before! Saved $100+ by not taking it to the dealer! Subscribed! Thanks!

I wish I could share pics to you of mine... I've had it less than a year, bought it off my neighbor.. worked great until about a week ago. Sputtering & hit the gas & died... My son races dirt bikes, so 2 strokes problems I diag decently, not being a rider myself, I'm ok.... Thankfully I found this video, because I was ready to pull out the carb & start cleaning jets..... But nope, in the past week, a mud dobber decided my spark arrestor was the perfect spot.. but you couldn't tell until I pulled it out.... Fired right up.. thanks

Top video Steve had similar issue not revving up on ryobi. They have mesh panel filter between motor and muffler. Pulled apart and tested but not the problem. Noted that idle was fast and so adjusted low screw while running by half a turn. This fixed the problem of motor bogging. I was so surprised that the carb adjustment was so critical.

Hi Steve, I only popped in here to get help with getting my BG56 leaf blowers going again, But I noticed before you said it that you had popped a bottle of Grolsch, it is great beer aint it? I was lucky enough back in 1998 to spend a year working in Enschede in the Netherlands which is the home town of Grolsch, its an amazing town. In the middle of the market square is the church and around the square are 22 bars all serving Grolsch, its just lovely to sit outside the bars at the tables in the sun and watch the beautiful tall leggy Dutch girls walk by sipping a Grolsch :) The next street back had 6 coffee shops, great Dutch coffee if you know what I mean. Then the next street back had about 5 bordellos ...I have no idea what they were ... But anyway you enjoy the Grolsch and I'll get back to watching how to fix the blower ... The yard needs a blowing job doing on it. Please excuse this post, its a sunny day, and I would have been cutting the hedge now if I could have got the Stihl HS45 going .. but the carb is binged up in that.

Hi Steve, I was all fired up to take the spark arrester out and burn it off .. :( Blow me it doesn't have one here in the UK ... I'm going to watch your video about adjusting the the carb screws now. This blower starts by dies if I try and rev it. I'll be back to let you know how I get on. I'll be having a beer later anyway, my favourite at the moment is American "Shipyard IPA".

Steve, as a mechanical minded person I could not work out why I had this issue of not revving. Consider air fuel ratios, filters, spark plugs and compression. Now I washed out my black carbon exhaust filter in petrol and a toothbrush worked perfectly. The blower started first pull and felt like it had a supercharger onto it 😂 Thankyou so much for a great video ! Cheers

I wish we would have had these videos when I was a young man. I have fixed countless 2 cycle motors by just cleaning or removing the spark arrestor when the symptom is the same as the one in the video. But, it took me YEARS to figure this out and early on paid to have my weedwacker "fixed" due to this very symptom by a mechanic who would not tell me what the fix was. I am now an old guy (67) with a lot of real world small engine repair experience. Just about all of my knowledge in regards to small engines have come from trial and error and reading. These videos today would have been SO helpful but I guess there is something to be said for learning by experience. This ethanol gas has to have really helped out the bottom line of many shops. It is one of the biggest boondoggles our government has come up with. Only the farmers are smiling.

Steve, Thanks a whole lot for your video! I have a Stihl BG-86 that started running about 1/2 power. I found you video, removed the whole thing, cooked the screen on my gas stove until it was red hot and it worked like a charm! Now I have full power again!

Thanks for the video,my blower is fairly new and was slow to rev up so I assumed they had it set to rich from the factory and left it that way for break in but it finally got systems in this video. There must be a special driver to adjust the carb? It took forever to get the adjustment screws out but I cut a slot in each one for a screwdriver and adjusted the carb first and didn't even consider the exhaust first. I've never had my stihl saws have exhaust plug ups. Keep posting!!

Thanks again Steve. I have a Stihl MS 340 back pack blower. Almost new! It worked great for half the season then it started bogging down. I started messing around with filters and the carb, Stihl the same. I said to myself, "What would Steve do?" Watched the video, put the torch to the spark arrester and "Voila" it worked 100%. I wonder if Small engine shops will hate!!!

Thank you for this video! After trying several other things that didn't work...this was exactly what was wrong. I didn't have a propane torch so used steel wool and then burned remainder of carbon off with a fire lighter. Worked well and blower now runs great!

Great tip thank you.I have a Stihl BG 55 that doesn’t run.My son took it in and they told him by the time they fix it parts and labor (especially if it needs a new carb) you could just buy a new one.Folks that is not the answer I wanted to hear, but I am afraid this may be a common thing after a $40 bench charge plus parts and any initial lab our costs.Your channel helps out tremendously and saves us money.Right now I am gonna pull the carb and find a new OEM Stihl carb and see where that gets me.Respectfully E.P. Been doing step B 4 years now don’t live in any high flammable area at all got a spare spark arrestor screen put in if ever needed as a precaution but that day has never arrived ! Lol Thanks Steve pretty much the same for all my Stihl outdoor power tools no screen but threaded insert back in ! Improper fuel mix will really plug ‘‘em up in a hurry also ! To rich mix speeds up plugging exhaust screen much quicker !

Great video Steve! Awesome channel, direct and to the point repair advice! Easy to follow along. I installed a new carb, but stihl wouldn't run, didn't realize those little black caps were "limiting" stops!! will try again to adjust. If this doesn't work, rings must be worn?

Yep, it worked. I went for the pull it out and leave it out option. Not worried about starting fires and could care less if the neighbors can hear it. The blower seems to work better than it ever did. I wish I had pulled this screen out when I first bought the blower. Thanks for the advice!!

That's a great idea. I own a Stihl blower for about three years and it still runs fine. Just used it about a week ago. However, if this problem comes up in the future I hope I will remember this fix. Again thanks again for your great advice. You are absolutely right that your tricks can save a lot of money. Probably if I took it to my Stihl dealer I would spend at least $50.00 US to have them fix it.
