I watched your original video on just the AMG GT, and bought my 2016 GTS in 2020, precisely at the lowest point in its depreciation. After my purchase, Covid prices hit, and there was one point where I could've sold it for about $30K more than I paid, after adding roughly 8,000 miles. 🤯 But, I wasn't done with my car yet, and kept it until a few months ago. I ended up selling the car for $4K less than I paid for it... 4 years later, after putting another 34,000 miles on it. Thanks for your insight!

Based on the cars I’m looking at, the AMG GTR has fallen another ~$20k since this video was made. But I could be overlooking cars with clearly above market asking prices inflating the average.

It's not surprising that Jaguar F-Type P450 RWD has only 8.5% depreciation, completely beating all other GT cars in this segment. This is not an anomaly of data, but rather a testament to the market's understanding of P450 RWD's value. There is no other "luxury" V8 rear-wheel drive GT sports car at $70K-$80K brand new, with 5 year warranty and 5 year free maintenance. The AJ133 V8 engine in the P450 is identical with the $115K F-Type R, with the primary difference being factory software tuning. Even the cooling system and the supercharger units are identical in the P450 and the R. Moreover, the R does not come with RWD, which means less butt shaking and less fun in public. Furthermore, 10-year old F-Type V8 RWD S cost $45K~$55K for low mileage examples with no accident history. Therefore, the market understands that a $70K~$80K brand-new F-Type P450 RWD is heck of value today. This is why P450 RWD outperforms all other F-Type trims in depreciation analysis. The AWD version of P450 is heavier and less fun, so it is not as sought after as potential future collectibles. I predict that P450 RWD will invert the depreciation curve and go higher before the end of this decade, only to be followed by other F-Types in the future, and people who are conditioned to think otherwise about Jaguars will be surprised by the return of the E-Type-isque used car market for the F-Types.

I recently bought a 2016 AMG GTS, fully spec’d out (160k brand new) with 20k miles, for $75k. I could be wrong, but I don’t seeing it depreciating much more. It is an incredible car. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

I was just opining on this a few days ago, so good timing! It seems like GT cars tend to depreciate more than Sports cars. My guess as to why: The most desirable GT car qualities get worse with time (interiors make noises and wear with age, tech gets outdated, etc.) and better with newer models (better tech, more modern interiors, less road noise, etc.). Conversely, desirable sports car qualities get better as they age compared to newer models (more analog, fewer nannies, no particulate filters (EU), natural aspiration, etc.). Sure newer models are faster, but in all other respects they're worse. Thus, I think sports cars tend to hold value better than GT cars.

Sure! I would say it’s a sliding scale of pure luxury car on the left GT car in the middle, and pure sports car on the right. Pure GT cars start blurring into luxury, while still being able to handle well and having power. Most have a blend of features, especially as modern cars often come with nice interiors. Pure-ish sports cars: any stripped out Cup car, many of the lest gen Lotus cars (not the newest ones). Pure-ish luxury cars: Bentleys & Rolls Royces. Pure-ish GT: Panamera and 4 seater Ferraris (non-SUV)

@@dns15r good question. For most, including me, GT and sports cars are similar because they both look cool, are fast, fun to drive, etc. However, when you get down into the details, they are very different. GT cars are set up for long journeys and are not very good on the track. GT cars are heavier, longer wheelbase, softer ride, less torque, more comfortable, often times more plush Interiors, etc. If you’re still young and fit, get a sports card, if you can, because you can handle the rough ride and tight quarters over long periods of time. Now that I’m approaching my 60s, I would hate to have to go 300 miles in a sports car, but then again, an average sports car will beat most high-end GT cars on the track with ease.

Comprehensive video. good info. My car is on the list and it's ~ 10% so not bad. That said, my car is now 8 years old and pretty sure it's flattened in terms of depreciation. I expect all cars + 5 years should be relatively flate and won't see 5-10% year on year depreciation. Has this been accounted for or is continual depreciation something unique to the USA market on which the data is based ?

The fact that they need zero replacement whatsoever vs fabric roofs is a whole other subject about avoiding thousands in convertible maintenance costs. Aston Martin V8 Vantage manuals specially for 4.7 are definitely higher in value when they rarely are for sale in the US, most GTs are manual and I think that's why they are trending higher than the Vantage S, also most Vantage S and majority of later 4.7 came with the sportshift which was the new tech back then I think causing the softer values.

I think the modern Vantage platform is becoming the best value for brand heritage, looks, performance, and overall ownership! Packs a lot of value for 100k range. 992s are awesome but the Aston brand carries a lot more oomph for the average joe, not considering better power and interior build quality.
@truthseeker0077
@truthseeker0077 10 ай бұрын
I happen to disagree. The infotainment system in the Vantage is a direct lift from an old Mercedes C-Class COMMMAND interface from two generations ago. That's why it feels so outdated from Day 1 of its production in the mid last decade. Adding insult to the injury, the interior quality and the aesthetics of the Vantage appear quite childish and below the class of what Aston Martin interior used to be. Furthermore, for all the talks about heritage, Aston Martin simply does not have R&D money to develop its own bespoke platforms and infotainment systems and keep them in refined conditions. The warranty is damn short relative to competitors, and the service experience and the service cost at the dealership are high relative to peers. The most damning aspect of the Vantage, along with DB7, DB9, etc, is that it has a history of depreciating to almost nothing, as in $35K or less. The depreciation curve for lower-end Aston Martins does not really stop, and lower-end Astons are not sought after, unlike Porsche's 993 911s, or even 997s and 991s. I'd say it's much better value to get Porsche 911 any day. Parts are easy to find, services are easily performed by indy shops, and they drive significantly better than most Aston Martins.
@applelegos
@applelegos 10 ай бұрын
The infotainment is a downside, but a simple CarPlay retrofit solves most of the issues. These are great drivers, not necessarily a big need for good infotainment and CarPlay works great at solving this gap. As per your other points, you have absolute merit. However the styling has been welcoming to younger owners, and a lot more people are aware of the brand due to F1 as well. Typical Aston depreciation might appear, but traditional gremlins won’t since it uses the Mercedes powertrain. I think this vehicle marks a new chapter in Aston’s history and hoping to see different behavior than the past. I bit the bullet on a 2020 Vantage (upgraded from a 4.7 Vantage) and some of my friends traded in their base 992s after me since they saw a lot more value per dollar from the Aston compared to their base 992. They got paid to make the transition as well. We could be completely wrong and lose our butts on them but our smiles-per-mile have been higher!
