Do you want to get stronger? In this video, I’m going to discuss the simplest way to do that by focusing on two things: compound movements and progressive overload. These two elements of a training program are particularly helpful for beginner lifters and will always serve as the basis of programming for even the more advanced lifter.
60% off all AX programs - athleanx.com/x/34-workouts
Subscribe to this channel here - / jdcav24
Compound movements are the lifts that allow us to incorporate the most muscles possible, thereby giving us the opportunity to move the most weight possible. By working multiple muscles at a time we’re able to get more bang for our buck by doing fewer exercises but also by allowing us to take advantage of the heavier weights we are able to lift.
To find the best compound exercises we don’t need to look any further than the tried and true staples. The bench press, overhead press, barbell row, weighted chin up, squat and deadlift.
These movements will allow you to move some serious weight and have you adding more and more weight to the bar with almost each and every workout. Just these few exercises will also train almost every muscle in your body, almost.
Make no mistake, these compound movements will definitely increase your strength, more so than perhaps any other, and they will make up the foundation of any serious training program, but they can also leave you lacking in many other areas.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t educate you on the areas of your training that you are overlooking by being singularly focused on just strength. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE fan of strength, in fact I’ve seen first hand how taking a genetically gifted athlete and doing nothing but making them stronger will help them rise to new heights.
Fact is, most of us are not genetically gifted athletes, we more often than not are sitting at a computer all day at work and being severely under stimulated physically outside of what we do in the gym. For these two reasons alone you need to make sure that strength is a foundational part of your training, but not the only part of your training. Never make yourself one dimensional.
For more videos on how to get stronger, and to be a complete athlete, be sure to subscribe to this channel via the link below and turn on notifications so you never miss a new video when it’s published.

Correct me if I'm wrong: Aesthetics: Isolation and cardio. Performance: compound and progressive overload.
@viniciusf9266
@viniciusf9266 5 жыл бұрын
To have an aesthetic body you obviously will need to have muscles to show. To have muscles you will need to cause hypertrophy, and to cause hypertrophy you will have to expose your body to weights that it is not used to lift. So in summary, the progressive overload is also required to have an aesthetic body. But, unlike the case in which you want to increase only strength, in which you can get to use weights that will allow you to do a very reduced amount of repetitions, for example from 1 to 5, to reach an aesthetic body you will also use heavy weights but that allow you to do, for example, 8 to 12 repetitions, increasing the time your muscle becomes under tension and generating more hypertrophy.

All facts. I did a 4 year full body 3 days a week transformation. Compounds was squats,bench press,shoulder press,deadlift,pendlay row, 5 reps then for smaller body parts i did curls,skullcrushers,side raises and shrugs 8 to 10 reps. Man Jeff! Thanks for your videos. They really help in getting beginners going. I have been using your free vids for about 6 months and the results are phenomenal. My sister is a Physical therapist (or Physiotherapist as we call them in South Africa) and all of the science behind you techniques are sound. I cannot wait to sign up for a program as a thank you for all you help. I have lost fat, built muscle, got stronger and leaner simply by following your methods.

Hey Jeff, really big fan here.I admire you not only as a trainer but as a person, because throught the difficulties and the thousands of questions that I had about training which I was afraid to ask because they would make fun of me , you were there for me all the way with your videos.The problem that I am facing is a stiff left trap, something like a trigger point.For some strange reason, my left trap hurts like hell during my chest training thus taking over the exercise.I have no problem on the bench press, but for some reason whenever I decide to do incline dumbell press or cables or even pushups, I feel a huge pain on my left trap which forces me to stop the exercise not because my chest can't take it but because my trap starts killing me.I don't even train my traps so it's not like they are overdeveloped. You mentioned that specific problem on the end of the "HOW TO FIX A STIFF NECK"video and said that you could cover that it in the future.Could you make a video in order to give us your thoughs on this?Haven't found anyone with your knowledge about stuff like this, so I think you are the only who could provide an insightful solution.

Jeff you are soooo right about being a well rounded athlete. It is a shame alot of people in the gym these days think they are doing something, but they are not. They think their strong and just try a one dimensional approach. They can't even do push ups, dips, or pull-ups. And these are the young ones. I have trained since junior high school, and I'm 42 now, and I have to admit I did not get it right until about 3 years ago. That is why i like your channel you show us how to train like an athlete, an all around athlete. Thanks Jeff.

Exactly how I have been approaching training from the beginning. I’ve always felt I needed to mix callisthenics and weights, then I moved to the UK and started going to the gym and I still kept doing callisthenics. After then I was focused more on the weights and I noticed I became much less flexible, agile, moveable and so on... And started doing athletic movement again and I felt so much better, even the “shape” of my muscles became little bit different. Martial arts was a big part of my childhood so I always knee what I was capable of, in terms of movement, so I feel better by using my mind and body in so many ways

You are awesome. What you said is true. I am 61, i did workout for all the body parts for one half hour a day, 4 times a week until I am fully sweat out. I started to do lifting last eight month with dumbells and barbell curl only, including deadlift. Now I am able to lift heavy, just like you guys. Actually, my main purpose is to build strength and reduce my weight, as doing cardio for over years since I was 45, couldn't give strength and neither it reduce weight. However, with weight lifting, it seems that today, my muscles had developed very obviously too esp on my biceps, triceps, shoulders, lat, delt and I could also see my 6 pack hihi. My weight reduced from 88 kg, now I am 62 kg. The main thing is to set your mind to achieve these goals, with decipline, hard work and concentration. Never have dinner hihi. Its really really awesome. Tq bro.

Don't miss out on nutrition and sleep also, and everyone please remember that sleep is more important then both combined its all just a trinity to good health. You need functional exercising, a nutritional clean diet, and adequate rest 6,8,10+ hours. Everything mentioned varies depending on the individual.

This is the problem that I’ve always found with my football teams programs while growing up. Coaches focus completely on the numbers and increasing Bench, Squat, Deadlift, etc... Ever since starting athlean x my bench press hasn’t increased hardly at all, but I’m an incredible amount more athletic.

Not sure if that's a compliment. Correct technique should always increase performance. Imagine Usain bolt learning a new tweak that doesn't reduce his sprint time. What's the use?

VIVEK SINGH I would say that overall my performance is better. Better form, a little bit more weight, etc... but Bench press was always my best lift. Athlean x has helped tremendously with other lifts that I wasn’t so good at before.

well thats odd because I've never able to lift as much weight since I've been training with athleanx programs. One day I decided to test my 1 RM and I was blown away by the amount of strength I built without even performing low rep compound lifts. It's probably your nutrition that needs to be checked.
