Obviously, comedy is all derivative from some point in the past, but I believe the recent surge in Post-Ironic Meta-Humor is due to the influence of Tim Heidecker. Don't believe me? Well, that sucks, because I just asked my mom and she said I'm right, sorry!

I also believe that a really big component of Heideckers comedy is his editing (Dougs) and mise-en-scene and cinematography. His productions consistently nail the feeling of each skit he tries to convey, like a rad tv show from late 90s mtv, or a Carl Sagan like documentary, or myriad of infomertials, and the list goes on. The fact that his productions nail those various formats so good elevates his jokes exponentially, in my opinion.

I think Tim Heidecker can be very funny, but the overwhelming majority of people influenced by the Tim & Eric style are embarrassingly unfunny. The major difference being that Tim's humor most often has many layers and intentions behind it, and the imitators generally just do surface-level "random/awkward" nonsense because they can't actually think of anything funny to do, say or write.

It's weird watching this stuff get analyzed in-depth. I've always used Tim & Eric's comedy as a measuring stick for new people that come into my life. You either love it, hate it, or simply don't understand it. I can still be friends with people that don't like it, but I usually don't have anything in common with people who don't understand it, and it's pretty rare if I end up good friends with that person. In regards to Tim's ventures into post-irony, it's also worth mentioning a lesser-known film he starred in and helped produce, directed by Rick Alverson called "The Comedy". It's a fantastic, yet painful, cautionary tale about the dangers of "overindulging" in a post-ironic lifestyle. In his work, Heidecker uses his post-ironic humour carefully and professionally. He knows what he's doing. Post-irony really is a "don't try this at home" approach to comedy, and while it may seem like goofy fun to deliberately blur the line between funny and not funny, if you go too deep you may lose that line and end up not valuing anything. The film is absolutely brilliant and does a much better job at explaining this idea than I have here. Also, despite the title, it is very much NOT a comedic film.
@cake1661
@cake1661 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's also important to mention that for years Tim and Eric seemingly had no footage of them behind the scenes where they weren't in character. Every interview was either clearly an insane bit from them or just when it starts getting 'serious' they would say something stupid to show that they're still just fucking with everyone. For years even huge fans of their work didn't have a good idea of what these guys were actually like in real life which sort of helped hold the glue of all their works together and make even the most mundane, seemingly 'real' videos of them seem hilarious. Tim only started presenting as the real Tim Heidecker around 5 years ago and Eric has only recently appeared as the real Eric Wareheim a few times on Tim's podcast.

The analysis of why Tim and Eric is funny is not very good in this video. He seems to think that self deprivation and saying dumb things is what makes Tim and Eric different. Truth is 90% of all of tim and Eric is just parody. They're not saying "haha what if we made a sketch about dumb scientists who don't understand anything and keep talking out of their butts" in reality they are saying "let's satirize the intellectual community and they're "ism's" by doing a video that is constructed similarly, but the content is nonsense" they do this with "the universe" satirizing scientism and that religion, they satirize doctor patient relationship, award shows, TV ads, and tons of other things. What's very funny now is that after all those years of counter cultural content they made, they themselves as individuals have become narrative oriented and distorted by politics, of course they hate trump. It's just sad to see something like that get ruined. MDE was the next great hope, season one was seriously prophetic, but also insanely funny.

Extremely well done, from a long time fan. It’s crazy how much stuff Tim has put out that I genuinely enjoy and love and don’t just give a pass because I like the guy. Like, everything he’s made the last 15 years or so is some of my favorite all time media, let alone comedy. I love your style and I would love to see your take on Dougpound and his influence. His editing was such an insane part of that show and making something out of nothing, he deserves so much credit. Not to leave Eric out obviously he is the whole aesthetic and look and design of it all. But Doug also was a huge part of Eric Andre and his series Poundhouse is some ahead of its time, cutting edge shit haha. Also 2wetCrew! Also some of my all time favorite stuff.

The On Cinema Oscar specials are some of the funniest things you can find on the internet. That show does a genius job at editing. You get the sense that the in-character editors of this show absolutely hate Tim Heidecker, and the out-of-character editors are trying as hard as they fucking can to make Tim break.

The last part of the video discussing standup allowed me to finally figure out why I find the people who got their sense of humor from standup not that funny. It's like their whole idea of irony is contained in either being mean or just saying things with different intonation.
@cattysplat
@cattysplat 2 жыл бұрын
Much of standup is just laughing in an audience at something, doesn't matter what it is or if it is actually funny, it's just laughing as part of a group to feel you belong, many of these shows even have plants who laugh and clap on que to prompt audience to respond. Not entirely different to laughing along to a laugh track, you remove the laughing and you see how unfunny those shows can be.

Great video. I’m glad Tim and Eric’s show gets the recognition it deserves with how it influenced and even shaped newer and more experimental types of comedy by not just including one off jokes of this type but by making it the standard for the entire show. Eric’s role shouldn’t go understated though; if it wasn’t for him, many of my favorite skits would not be nearly as good. For me the next natural transition from this type of humor was easily the Eric Andre show which in itself takes the concept even further and to new absurdist and nihilistic levels I hadn’t seen before. I mean hell; where Tim’s show deconstructs sketch comedy and more, Eric Andre continues that but brings in subversions of the late night show format which I absolutely love. Speaking of deconstructing, it’s no coincidence the set gets completely obliterated each season for instance. Bird up.
