I was an intern in the late 80s an my main job was to send faxs to Eastern European where you had to call a switch operater first to get a phone line.

I used to work at a dealership and used the fax machine every day in 2023. I remember wondering how long it would take for us to modernize this lol. Accounting also relied heavily on it.
