We can invest in value, but in 2008 they threw the baby out with the bathwater. For example Visa and Mastercard. They were perfectly fine and got tanked. Generational buying opportunities but at those moments you need to have cash and low hanging steel wreckingballs. 😅

Sure they tanked, but the difference is that high quality companies recover faster than the market, and the risk of permanent loss of capital is low. Many companies had a lost decade ahead of them in 2008, but Visa was pretty much back to normal in 2010, making new highs by 2011

I think you’ll find that there’s no standardised accepted numerical number that defines a ‘crash’ is in the stock market. A 50% correction is an extreme example of a crash. Sven may well be referring to a standard crash, which is commonly accepted as 10%. A 50% drop is capitulation event, I don’t think he’s calling for that.

stocks usually have a 2% premium on the interest rates, so it should be 6 if rates are 4%, 3% rates, 5% stocks...

Got your point. Because of the risk they have, the market would have to price them lower rising that additional 2% in the earnings yield. However, because of the earnings optimist forecast, the current earnings yield is so low. And also because people don’t care about the earnings yield if the market just goes up 10% each year. It’s then only a matter of selling what has been highly revalued after a year. To sum up, it’s all about speculating about always having tailwinds in the conditions, but when there’s just a bit of uncertainty all that speculation shows its flaws.

this needs to be managed well - with higher rates on the horizon or even the uncertainty, companies and especially REITs will be well advised to rather pay back debt and reduce leverage instead of making new investments. However, good companies should be able to handle this. Looking at balance sheets and taking due diligince seriously is becoming more important for investors going into 2025 ... but this is what Svens YT channel is all about 🙂

Interest rates have NEVER been good at controlling inflation. Look at the inflation data from the 70s and into early 80s. Inflation just didn't care what Volker did because inflation isn't a monetary phenomenon. Prices going up have many many factors like you state and in global supply chains those influences are global.

Not true. Interest rates only care about avialability of money. The central bank is just one of many factors, it merely controlls the overnight inter bank rate. Nothing else. 97% of currency units are created by the private banking sector. Inflation has zero, zero to do with supply chains. That is not inflation. Those are temporary price changes that never ever stick. What happens after an oil embargo resolves? Well prices come down (deflation) This is the thing about inflation. It doesn't come down which tells you that it has zero to do with for example oil prices (check oil price chart inflation correlation in the 70s and 80s, inflation picked up first, right after the decoupeling the USD from gold, middle east war was only AFTER the inflation picked up) Inflation has never and will never have anything to do with supply chains.
