I drove such a Ferrari 456GT over a duration of about 2 years, because its owner wasn't able to drive it anymore, but at the same time doesn't want to sell it. It was a dark-blue metallic one & when the owner died, his family wanted me to find the perfect next owner, as I sadly couldn't afford this car, assurance-wise. So, it went back to Italy, where it's still in the ownership of the buyer, 12y later - and every time, I'm in the area, we do a short trip around his town, bc he knows, I would have bought, if I would have had the money for. So, thank you Doug for sharing this with the community.😍

In 1997 I got to spend most of my summer vacation driving my uncle’s 456 in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It was the most impressive car I’ve ever driven in every respect, and one the German autobahn I got to push it hard and it just settle into a comfortable groove while the engine screamed this incredible mechanical symphony. If I could afford to buy and maintain one I absolutely would. The only problem with experiencing it was having to go back home to the US and our low speed limits and drive my boring Honda Accord.

My parents were the official doctors of a couple of Ferrari tours back in the 90s Every time the group went on track they had a bunch of wrist and ankle injuries. Due to the weight of the clutch and the shifter. With the adrenaline of “racing” everyone was pushing it very hard and not noticing they were actually hurting themselves. But a few minutes (and a bunch of cigarettes) after stopping many of the owners started limping around, complaining about ankle, knee, wrist and forearm pain. That’s how heavy the controls were All the best to everyone

When you think about it being 2024, in three more years, the time distance between this car when new to 2027 will be the same time distance from when the 1962 250 GTO and the 1995 456 GT will be the same length. 🥴😵‍💫🤯

It might have been more restrained and sublte, when it came out it was a remarkable design. It might have been one the 90's semi-retrotrendsetters, but the big side outlets and C pillar angles were pretty wild for it's day. I fell in love with the BMW 850CSi slowly, because I really wanted the 1978 - 1981 BMW M1 so much... But there were only around 453 M1 cars produced to Giugiaro's design. The 850Ci from 1994 - 99 looked like the closest successor we ever got, and I still would do nearly anything to get one of the 1218 made with the updated M73 engines. Though the 850CSi was the sportiest version of these E31 series cars, they only made 1510 and so few of the European spec "four wheel steering" that I get sad looking at the "refreshed" body style that lost a little bit of the "magic" to meet safety and cooling needs. Of the carried forward designs since the 840 / 850 series cars of 1990 - 1999 the BMW i8 had some initial design promise, thrown away in the pursuit of the electric market, IMHO. But I really think BMW should have got their act together and actually tried producing the "Vision M Next" concept car from June 2019 - it could have been a worthwhile (and very expensive) successor to the original M1, *if* BMW could have ever figured out a proper power train in place of the "plug in hybrid" combined engine they had thought of (with abismal range). If BMW ever could produce a worthy design successor to the original M1 (E26) I would be the first to head to my super high selling regional dealership and throw all my money away to them on deposit, and purchase it. But even back in the 1990's when the 850Ci /CSi were new, Ferrari captured all my spare time and attention. There is something so... straightforward and pleasant about the 456 design, it is not overwhelmingly complex, yet it never looks "simple" either. But times has moved on, and the Ferrari 458 or 599, or the F12 berlinetta, or even going back to the near unobtainable in the U S 512BB are fantastic looking cars.

I’ve had my 1998 456 GTA for over 7 years now and it’s amazing how much love this car gets despite how they are often one of the least expensive Ferrari’s to buy right now. I do have lots of people who owned several Ferrari’s try to guess the model and many of them get it wrong. It is cool owning a rarer Ferrari although it’s not the fastest or best made model.

In the Doug Scores table I notice that if you gave *my* '05 Ferrari 612 the same Styling number as Doug gives to this 456 -- an 8, not a 5 -- the additional three points would vault the 612 to first place, ahead of the Ferrari 550, the Murcie, the SLR, and the 360 Strad!

Thanks for the fun review of the old school 'gentlemen's express'! Here's a quick FYI about Ferrari automatics as well as 2+2s in general. Old school automatic 2+2 Ferraris actually go back quite a long time. The first (that I know of) were 6 late 1960s / early 1970s 365GT 2+2 (Queen Mother) these had a GM Turbo 400 3 speed. Then they skipped the 365GTC/4 and (I think) the 365GT/4 2+2 (the first of the 400-412 body style), which were all manual 5 speed. The majority of the 400, 400i and 412 series were auto (also GM Turbo 400). Then the 456... Ferrari 2+2s go back to the early 1950s with a 2+2 bodied 212 and became Ferrari's bread and butter with the 250GTE and 330GT but these were all manual transmission (not gated though).

Automatic 456 used Cadillac 4sp box as basis. Ferrari subcontracted Ricardo in UK to design different housing for GM internals to fit at rear of 456 to same location as manual gearbox. 456, 550, 599 and 612 manual and F1 box was done by Grasiano. Grasiano box was also used in many Aston Martin's. Rigardo did competition V8 for Nissan which they didn't end up using. McLaren took that unused design and put it into use in MP4-12C and almost all McLaren's since. Its small world in automotive subcontracting. Everyone is many ways connected to everyone else.

In our family I had the chance to drive quite often both the 456 and the 612. No match. The 456 needs the transmission oil to (really) warm up and the stick WANTS to be operated with adequate force, than it will perform in its most pleasant and satisfactory way. Same for the steering, needs to be thrown hard in corners and will reward with happiness. Awesome car. I drove both in Monza circuit too (no racing, just laps) and the 612 was too long a wheelbase for variante and sharp cornering plus (minus) the F1 gear of the times was awful, slow and clunky. No way you can rate 612 handling higher. We lost the beloved 456 in the Genova flooding of 2014 and we are still missing her. A car that could last forever ❤

While I haven’t seen the Ferrari wagon, I’m seeing a lot of beautiful wagons as I’m visiting Europe. They’re better looking, better handling, and more efficient than the overgrown SUVs in the US. I wish we’d go back to more sedans, coupes, and wagons. Very few Americans really use SUVs as they’re intended, and would be better off with the wagons found here.
