It's more ludicrous when you realize that as soon as Amuro was countering Char's rhetoric easily, Char just decides to start hitting below the belt by throwing Quess in Amuro's face, and when that wasn't working, unprompted, throwing Lalah's death at his face, which is monumentally rich because, though Amuro did literally kill her, she was only even there in the first place because of Char, from making her into a weapon, to dangling her in front of Amuro so he wouldn't fight back while they destroyed the White Base. So yes, Amuro's last moments in life is witnessing his hated rival for what the latter truly was, a petty man who had no ability to recognize that maybe, it wasn't always someone else's fault, whether the Zabis, Haman, or Amuro that he had problems. Thank god for being a Newtype, so they can "live" after death.

I love that this entire movie is Amuro trying to understand Char while Char desperately tries to make himself understood to Amuro, and through all the political debates, all the fighting, all the petty grievances, and all the bickering they engage in, it's only at the very end, when Char blurts out, almost out of nowhere, that it all stemmed from his maternal trauma, that Amuro FINALLY understands Char. It's only when that understanding is reached that the psycoframe resonance hits its peak, Axis moves, and both men are engulfed in the cosmic glow. It's such a beautiful conclusion to their story.

We already saw by the end of that war that Amuro was the better pilot. Char had the upper hand in their early encounters since Amuro was new to piloting a Mobile Suit. As Amuro started to improve, Char traded in his older suits for more powerful ones, but never had the edge over Amuro he did initially. By the end of the series Char had to relay on the most powerful suit Zeon had in order to pose a threat and the best he could manage was a draw. We see this again here since while the Nu Gundam is state of the art it was still a prototype rushed out the door that lost control of its fin funnels before the battle with Sazabi. Char had no such handicap, had the edge from built in weapons, gets the jump on Amuro a couple times allowing him to destroy Amuro's beam rifles, and in the end he still loses.

The righteous leader of Zeon who will "shoulder evil" for the better of mankind or the madman who planned all this for a suicide duel with his rival. This line honestly doesnt prove either of those views and I wish there was a follow up line. He said he wasnt planning to change the world, but isnt that what he said in his sweetwater speech? He wanted to change history, force everyone to live in space. Or was it just his hatred for earth and wanting to end them all. Or maybe he finally just admits it that all of this was just the workings of a sad man who lost everything and has nothing left to live for. In his final moments char is the most pathetic he’s ever been. A hero of both the one year war and the gryps conflict, his final words are insults thrown towards amuro and quess, both people who trusted him. If tominos point was to destroy chars character here I think he did it. Soldiers in tominos work seem to never have happy endings; that’s why civilians like kamille seem to live

Amuro could not save char, even though he seemed to really want to. Neither men could escape their past; char because he was fixated on it, amuro because he was constantly reminded of it. Ultimately though, this movies ending is a happy one; earth is saved, and it was the combined will of humanity that saved it. Maybe that was what tomino intended; we could not rely on two men alone to save the earth, we as a people had to take responsibility for it. Otherwise the mistakes would be repeated

@@cezarjulian0320 Actually you can't sympathize with either Char or Amuro, because Char's right that the system can't be changed and it needs to be taken down, but then he dismisses that earthnoids are poor, and Amuro is right humanity can change, but is wrong in that he contributes to state oppression. In the end, they are no heroes nor villains, just human beings who's views are in the wrong and the right. Jeudo Ashta though, he is the closest to being a hero in UC Gundam.
