Fun fact, they'll actually shave his head bald at basic training! They shave everyone's hair down to 1 mm when you get there. I remember everyone just sitting around silently rubbing our newly shaved heads, look at each other, then burst out laughing only to get yelled at soon after. Good times.

@@terrenceescarda8951 They accept people every month afaik and you can choose which month you'll start by timing when you apply. After a test and physical exam (and if there's no problems), you're assigned a date to report to your respective branch's basic training - which is generally within the following month. There are slightly less people starting in the winter cause they'd prefer to go through basic when it's warmer, but it really depends on an individual's schedule (the time of year they plan to return to university or work etc).

@King.K The Best Yes edit: I don’t think you understand my comment. The length of his hair in the video (after his friend shaved it) is still considered too long at basic and they will shave it down when he gets there. Everyone including people who came with buzzcuts.

I'm a korean woman. and have two younger brothers. both of them sreved in the army for almost 2 years. I remember that day when my first younger brother left home to joining the army, my mother burst into tears and then she hardly had any meals for a few days an account of missing him. she missed him every day. she was so worried about what he went through in the army. for example lynched by his boss(superior), a firearm accident, committing suicide and so on. all of the korean parants who send their sons to the military have the same feeling and sadness. some boys end up committing suicide in the military. Especially living in country like South Korea, when men turned 18 or onwards they have to give away 18 months or 2 years of their lives with no outsiders to do national service for their country. As we all know, two two Koreas are technically at war against each other so they need able body men to serve and protect their country.

I can only imagine what hardships they experience, especially regarding mental health. For those who really aren’t made for it they end up with quite a trauma. I have a Korean friend who jokingly says he experiences recurring nightmares from the time he served and even though he’s saying this with a smile on his face you really can tell he’s not okay, but the stigma towards those who are mentally ill is high in countries like South Korea so they might feel hesitant to seek a therapist.

I'm happy that he has a friend like you. as an ex - soldier ( Israeli - 2 years mandatory service as well) that means a lot, to know that there is someone who can see he's pain. It's hard, I have friends that never got back to themselves...3 years and then you need to forget everything. PTSD is an illness that people need to know and accept ( as an illness, as something real), but even in my own country - people don't get help until it's too late. I hope that's he's getting better, that he know he got your back.

Neet Freek it isn’t only the benefits that entice people to join the military ......the life changing environment changes many people positively and many people join for career opportunities. “Propagate such a profession to literal children” first of all, What you are talking about is JROTC not ROTC. Jrotc in no way recruits for the military, it’s intended purpose is to develop youngsters into well rounded citizens. ROTC is for college students so they aren’t children, and it’s also voluntary. From personal experience anyways almost nobody knows what rotc is and the few that choose to join proudly volunteer. I know many troubled kids and “disenfranchised poor people” who joined the military and came out as people they would’ve never fathomed to be, going from failures to well rounded people with bright futures.

It's the same for me in Greece. But here it's for 12 months. In the end of the video he said not many people look up at soldiers. It's the same here. The sad thing is, that after completing my service (got done with it before 3 weeks so everything's still fresh) personally I look even more down at soldiers than before my service. I realised how useless this mandatory service is for actually protecting the country against possible aggressors. The true reason mandatory military service in Greece will never fade, is because it is the only legal way for a EU country to maintain a system of literal slave workers and at the same time minimizing statistics for unemployment rate. Because when you serve you aren't considered unemployed, you work for like 12-14 hours a day, you get a monthly payment of 8.62 euro (just so that you don't look as unemployed in the legal papers) and the military training lasts about 10 days without learning anything useful. I hope it isn't the same in South Korea. I wish all the best to this Korean man and all of Korean men. Hang tight and pull through!

military service in Greece was mandatory even before EU so let's not drag EU into it. The military training standards are most likely different between Korea and Greece so let's not diminish what military service can teach. I do agree though it is probably the hardest thing a young male has to endure in life.

@@Name-jw4sj Those drills are not stupid nor pointless. They teach you about discipline, maintaining form, and keeping focus, which a lot of young people lack nowadays. If anything, the young man in the video could benefit from them. Also, how do you know they aren't learning anything from the military? Also, I argue that not everyone should be in a university and should take a gap year or specific job training before entering an institution that treats you like an indentured servant.

My husband is a Korean and migrated Australia. He joined the ROK marines back in 2000 and was deployed to a distputed territory island on theDMZ, then moved to Australia in 2005. Once settling in Australia he joined the Australian Army as an infantry soldier. Last year he returned to Korea as a soldier/ translator back to the DMZ on a peace keeping mission with the UN to dismantle guard posts the same area that the gun shots were fired. He said that he came across conscripts picking up unexploded granades with their bare hands and wrap them in masking tape. He was absolutely shocked at the risk of an explosion that could have killed them all. He said if that happened in Australia the bomb squad would of been called and everyone would of been evacuated. They are still uncovering human remains and returning them to families. He even went to the JSA and saw the very spot where Kim and trump shook hands.

It's crazy that the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed back in 1953, and they still have not officially settled the war-state between the South and North. That's roughly 67 years techically still at war. This is really the only reason why South Korea has mandatory military service. But since the 1950s, the amount of time has become slowly less and less. So many things will ease up to the point where it is voluntary. Regardless, South Korea & North Korea needs to settle this ASAP.

I feel bad for the men who have to go when they’re literally in their prime in their careers, studies, even social life. Most people only care about their favorite kpop idols going but you fail to realize that there are a lot of regular people whose lives are also interrupted. It’s understandable that most do not want to do it, and really unfortunate that anyone should have to go and be patriotic because that psycho Kim Jong Un can’t agree to peace, and backpedals constantly. Makes you really appreciate living in a country where no one has to serve by force.
