Peter Leko also said so before this tournament, that Magnus Carlsen plays much better now then 5 years ago. His opening preparation is on an entire other level and although he still admits misses like not seeing Bxb4 against Meier, his play when it matters, in complicated positions, is much more convincing now than then. Earlier he also missed some endgames (for instance against Anand) while playing close to perfect now. I also feel that this is a product of a conscious effort by him to elaborate with different styles of play - simply to take risks to be able to learn something new.

Great coverage, as per usual, well done GM King. For me, you get the right balance of giving sufficient relevant, and understandable, explanations. I say this because a certain other chess website gets the video out quicker, but merely seems to recite the moves, with little comment. I'm sure you can guess who I mean.

@One Love I just watched Agadmator's coverage of this same game (I didn't know him before) and found it perfectly "ok". He goes through the moves pretty quickly, sprinkled with some comments, none of which seemed wrong or off to me. However, I do agree with you that Dan's videos are VASTLY superior in any way conceivable (style, content, presentation, and - most importantly - chess expertise). Why the huge difference in "views" and "likes" isn't the other way round completely baffles me.

Really high level players will enjoy Daniel, but most others including myself are below 2000 ratings, so we're not that concerned abt the lack of in-depth positional analysis. You hit the nail on the head there, GM King- He really is like Fischer, or Karpov, or Kasparov... He's utterly dominating at the moment. And, in this age of computer chessnalysis.... well..... does that make him, possibly.... the best ever.....?

Of course, Magnus has been on absolutely superb form, but I wonder what happens to all the guys who play against him? Meier suddenly taking his king on a suicidal walk, Aronian just collapsing, Svidler virtually self-mating, MVL with a very iffy pawn sacrifice... You must be right about the aura of invincibility that emanates from him at the moment.
@zaksmith1035
@zaksmith1035 5 жыл бұрын
I agree about the others, but Svidler's self-mate was a joke. You can see it on the players' faces. If you haven't seen that moment I suggest you find it on youtube( it's really nice, kind of sweet of Svidler, and of course really funny). But yeah, that aura that Daniel talked about is definitely there. Carlsen is a beast at the moment, and everyone knows it, which I think is the reason why they're crumbling against him. They know if they make the slightest mistake they fail the test, and that they WILL be tested on EVERY move. It's like walking into a college finals exam with 40 questions and you have to get every one EXACTLY right. I think I would end up a gibbering idiot by the end of it. I'm surprised these players don't have their therapists waiting in the wings for after the game....

@@zaksmith1035 Yes, I've seen that. That was really big of Svidler. He's such a nice guy! Can't imagine Nakamura (or Magnus himself for that matter) losing with a big smile on his face... One would love to see Carlsen take on AlphaZero, alas, that will never happen...

Thanks for the great coverage. Carlsen gained 30 ELO in the last tournaments against these strong opponents. Not from this world. I think this is also a result of his openings. He had a phase when he choose too dry variations. But now it seems that he has found a way to get his positions.

Unfortunately, MVL may have fallen apart in this game, almost from the beginning. Carlsen is instilling the same kind of fear in his opponents that Fischer once did. I really feel sorry for any professional chess player,trying to make a living, who has to face Carlsen in a tournament.

Last year wasn't particularly good for MC and I was beginning to fear his reign was soon to be over and that he had lost his mojo. But this year he's bounced back and is hopefully back on track. He's beginning to get his fear advantage back, giving him a bonus even before the others sit down with him. He's still human (or is he? 🤔) and everyone has ups and downs, but nice to see he's still hungry and that something has clicked in classical, as he pointed out himself. Looking forward to the continuation. 👍👌👍

With white pawns on e2 and d3 the bishop on f5 is biting on granite. It feels just inferior to a conventional benko, the g7-a1 diagonal was clearly not enough here. I don't understand why Vachier-Lagrave went for this. Happy to see you coming to the same assessment.

I have read that Capablanca and Carlsen play the highest percentage of best computer moves. Magnus's play was simple and direct. Reminds me of Capablanca games I have studied. To foresee 33.Bd5 protects the pawn just blows my mind. If it were a puzzle I am not sure I would find that move.
@odin1313
@odin1313 5 жыл бұрын
That is correct. I have looked at that study. But it makes sens that the more positional/passive players tend to make fewer mistakes. Humans will miss the most precise computer moves in extremely complicated messy positions. Players like Kasparov or Tal, for instance, may not have had the same accuracy as Carlsen or Cappablanca, but it might have been harder for a human to play against them anyhow. Carlsen is definately the strongest chess player ever at this moment. But give a 16 year old Bobby Fischer access to stockfish for 10 years... who knows what would happen?
