Does something work if it's wrong every now and then? I don't think so. And so, I don't think the Finals MVP works.

The NBA mvp and finals mvp only works when the nba gives an honest narrative. They totally have a dishonest narrative about steph curry and iguadala in 2015 and it was because it was popular to hate on steph curry and to prop up LeBron James for money reasons. Steph curry shoulda been finals mvp

@@jacobstewart9139 I didn't understand why people hated that 2014-2015 Warriors team. They were built like any organic team should be and they broke out at the right time when they needed veteran toughness, the one thing that held them back from 2010-11 to 2013-14. Along with the veteran toughness, they also had an opportunistic defense and they took advantage of a weakened Cavaliers team to win a championship. And another thing, why do people hate it when a team takes advantage of an opponent that was missing a few starters when a championship is on the line? What happened to that next-man-up mentality?

I’ve always felt every sport should have a playoffs MVP instead of a series or finals MVP. The NHL has the Conn Smythe award and I think it works perfectly. The best example of this is Giguere in 2003. Was he the best player in the Stanley cup finals, no, but the Ducks would not have made it past the first round without him, he was unbelievable. Thus, he was awarded the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP and I don’t think anyone, not even Devils fans, would argue it. I also feel voters feel a need to give the award to a player on the winning team and this goes for all sports with a series/finals MVP in my opinion. As much as I like Iggy, Curry or Lebron should have gotten finals MVP. There are other examples like Paul Pierce in 08 or Wes Unseld in 78. If it had been a playoffs MVP instead, we would probably get more deserving candidates. 4-7 games is not a big enough sample size for an MVP. However, 16-28 is much better for an MVP award especially one with the historical significance that it will give to the player. With this in place, Lebron probably wins in 2015, Kobe wins in 2008 and Elvin Hayes wins in 1978. We need a playoffs MVP, the finals MVP is too restricting.

@@onelove2230 It's hard to quantify Steph's value though. Steph has value even when he doesn't play well just due to the impact he has off ball. He gets people open and disrupts defenses just by running around. KD's value is easier to appreciate just like LeBron because you can count the stats. The real problem is the Media that votes on it giving the award to Iggy in 2015 due to their infatuation with LeBron. Completely agree! It's literally in the name of the award. Person who added the most value or stepped up the most during (exclusively) the finals. By that logic, all of his points still apply. Did Iggy contribute more to the 2015 finals win than Curry? No, absolutely not. LeBron still should have won the award because he still carried a team missing its #2 and #3 options to a 6 game series. Those missing players also matter a lot more because the Cavs were a very top-heavy team. Kareem was also more valuable than Magic, Bird was more valuable, IT, Duncan, etc. The bigger problem is the award is most “valuable” player. It isn’t the best player award, so players like Curry, Duncan, and Bird should always win it, because their teams would implode without them. Also, Curry not having a FMVP is a crime against basketball.

Take Iggy off the team, the Warriors might lose in 7. Take Steph off the team, the Warriors lose in 4. Statistically, Curry averaged more points (26 v 16.3), had more assists (6.3 v 4), more steals (1.8 v 1.3), and damn near tied Iggy for rebounds (5.2 v 5.8) and blocks (0.2 v 0.3), despite his size. You had a fun assertion, provided great examples for your assertion to back it up, and still opened the door for us to disagree with you. (I personally like how we have these moments in the Finals where a role player can take advantage of his situation to shine in the spotlight. That's something that you've made mention of in your Jordan video... every player has advantages and it's about what you do with those advantages when you have them. However, to your point, if we are going to get caught up in narratives with this award, it cannot be the defining, end-all-be-all accolade.) 2.) When I watched your video today, and you said you had no idea how to fix the mess, you doubled down on not knowing and provided absurd solutions that we could all laugh at and enjoy (instead of taking yourself too seriously as a journalist by trying to force some solution) 3.) Clayton, it's really easy: Postseason MVP. This takes out the outlier series in the finals since you look at four series with individual matchups and all. So if you carry your team to the finals, but have a slightly worse series there and your team steps in for you, you still are the main reason for the championchip and get your well-deserved award. New discussion will arise from this (should LeBron then have gotten all PS-MVP since 2008?) But it would be a solution to your problem

why? the award would go to the player that was that guy in the finals anyway. what the hell would that award accomplish? "hey ur the most valuable player of the playoffs even tho u got bounced in the second round" like what? you think you want that idea but really its just terrible and wouldnt make any sense, and would lack value the MOMENT its given to a player that didnt even get the ring. the playoff mvp is much like the normal mvp, except the shot of that award is reserved for winners and the runner up to that ONE GROUP of winners.

It's called the Final's MVP. It's for the most valuable player in the finals series. There is no reason they should be giving it to the best player on the team in general or in the regular season or anything like that. It's specifically for the player that performed the best in the finals. If the best player on the team did not perform as well as another player on that same team in the finals then you would not expect them to get that award. Not sure what the problem is here.

About 1989: Joe - 27.3 PTS, 6.0 AST Zeke - 21.3 PTS, 7.3 AST, 1.5 STL But what makes the award Joe's was the shooting numbers. Both took 66 shots, but Joe made 38 (58%) while Isiah made 32 (48%). Joe took 38 free throws and missed 5 for an 87 FT%, Isiah took 13 less and missed 1 more for a 76 FT%. Joe also only averaged 1 foul per game in comparison to Isiah's 3.25, so overall it's fair Joe Dumars won Finals MVP.

Iggy should win him guarding lebron changed the series. Your agreement for that is like max scoring more points. It says "finals" mvp not playoff larry bird had a bad finals where he averaged just 15 PPG on .419 shooting and .460 TS%. Max's Games 3 through 6, when he put up 22.5 points on 64.8 percent shooting and 11.0 rebounds per game.

You could just let it go to the best player through the playoffs, (with the understanding that it goes to a player on the championship team) that way it lessens the chance at shenanigans of giving it to a role player, plus, you can't win a championship if you don't GET to the Championship, besides there have been years where the East has been SO bad the the WCF was in effect the actual finals, and that series ends up being much more pivotal and important.

I agree with your take and want to bring up one additional supporting argument to back up your point why picking the right FMVP matters. I recall on one of the Bill Simmons podcast mailbags, this guy wrote in saying his measure of All Time Greats in basketball boiled down to how many FMVPs you had. That current list? 1. Bill Russell (No, the award didn’t exist at the time. But we know he would have had at least 6 if not plenty more. The award is named after him, for goodness sake.) 2. Jordan - 6 3. Lebron - 4 T4. Johnson, O’Neal, Duncan - 3 (Give Duncan Parker’s FMVP and it would give him 4. Lebron would tie him for 3rd.) T7. Reed, Abdul-Jabbar, Bird, Olajuwon, Bryant, Durant, Leonard - 2 (Johnson’s FVMP going to Jabbar would give him 3 and they would swap spots. Bird also moves up with Maxwell’s FMVP.) Not saying it’s a perfect metric, but it’s certainly not a bad one. Arguably, in the all time great discussion, being the most valuable member on a championship team multiple times should count for something. But if the most deserving person doesn’t receive it, they aren’t getting their due credit.

I get where you’re coming from in this video and the joe dumars one and Andre iguodala ones don’t make sense but I feel like every other one was a good choice. It’s not about who has the overall better career, it’s about who has the better series. The tony Parker one is valid because he did have a better series against the cavs than TD did. If we were talking about the GOAT for every team, Timmy makes it, bird makes it, IT makes it, but it’s about who has the better series. Good video tho👍🏻
