Fantastic instructional video, thanks. I'm new to wood turning. Did look your videos "The Basic Box" and "The Finial Box" and "The Capsule Box" - I would like to know how to modify/change the long site wing of the 3/8 spindle gouge you are using in the videos.

Excellent video. I enjoy watching you turn your boxes. I'm interested in turning boxes, but I'm kind of stuck on which tools to acquire to actually finish the box. I don't have the scraper you mentioned, or the modified tool you used. Do you have any suggestions as to which tool/tools I might acquire to complete the process. I have a 3/8" fingernail gouge, and a skew, and various other gouges, but it seems I need a couple of more tools to add, in order to complete the process.Thanks again for your time,Tommy

Sounds like you've already got quite a few tools to get you started on a finial box. You'll also need 3/8 Beading/Parting Tool, Round Nose Scraper and a Narrow Parting Tool. You'll find them all at www.woodturnerscatalog.com Also, feel free to call us at 1-800-551-8876 if you have further questions/concerns. Thanks.

Great little box. Very instructional and entertaining video. I've made a number of these ( not as neat as this one) and have a question....what does one use a small box for? My family has asked me the same thing. They like the boxes, but they don't seem to find a function for them.

Capsule and finial style boxes are built mainly for aesthetic reasons, but there are endless options when it comes to storing small items in them. Wedding rings, jewelry and cuff links are really common. And with a large enough box, you can also hold toothpicks or Q-Tips.

Gary, I have 3 daughters who cant get enough trinket boxes. As i am learning to make these, they are being snatched up as replacements for plastic tubs and bottles they currently use. They all use them for hair clips, bobbles, cotton wool balls & other 'beauty' things; another uses them for organising small craft items she uses to make jewellery. I made a stacking set intended for herb pots which became containers for various colours of glitter. Although not practical for some things the variety of shape size and woods appear to please them. I have 'orders' from them beyond my abilities as yet

Where can I get the spindle gouge used in this video?
@alun7006
@alun7006 Жыл бұрын
It's a 3/8" spindle gouge, which is a standard size made by all the wood turning tool manufacturers. The gouge used for hollowing has been ground with a steep 60* bevel and a very long sweep back on the right wing. Just set your grinder table to the appropriate position.

Ray Key was probably using a 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 6", but you're always welcome to use any size that fits your liking.
