"a giant one in May, and another giant one now".. Dude, we currently have over 200 major fires burning across the country.. there's been a few small towns and communities literally wiped off the map in just hours, yet a surprisingly low human death count, currently only about 5 or 6 lives lost I think.. However, well over 5 million hectares (12 million acres), which is over 50,000 sq ks (19,300 sq miles) have gone up in smoke just since the end of October.. and that's THIS year.. This happens EVERY YEAR in varying parts of the country, but mostly the eastern states due to the much denser forested areas.. The smoke and ash from these fires has now crossed the Tasman Ocean and is causing health issues for folks in New Zealand.. it's BAD man.. and there's no proper rain forecast til fucking February.. It'll take DECADES for these forests to regenerate considering the savage intensity of the fires.. The RFS (NSW fire service) and Australian Red Cross have sites set up for donations if your listeners are wanting to help..

We have a big backlash now from the Aborigine peoples of Australia because of our poor back-burning causing these megafires. Our floura likes to be burned regularly, like our native guntrees. When people do backburning the trees don't actually get so hot that they burn to a crisp and the fauna don't get killed. It would be hot and really unless you have a good bit of Aboriginal know-how or bush techniques you'd be screwed. Interestingly Aboriginal people used the landscape like a map. They use landmarks to traverse the country with stories to help remember the landmarks - like a hill or a pile of stones to mark pathways. Sounds obvious but the old people read the land in a really intimate way. It's quite fascinating to listen to.

@lindyoneill87795 жыл бұрын
Samuel Phillips apparently they do get high on the leaves. Australia and Tasmania are on fire. Still and its 3 January 2020
@JamanoidusRex5 жыл бұрын
This is true. The eucalyptus has at least a mild sedative effect on them. Their bodies are able to deal with the eucalyptus whereas in the levels they ate it it would make other animals/humans at very least ill. The leaves are kind of unpalatable/fibrous/hard and contain little liquid or anything else really "good". They aren't fast moving to begin with...but they do eat all day, and they do look half asleep like ALL the time. Not really drugging themselves as such...but they are in a constant state of digestion because of what they eat - so they sleep more...then when they're awake they tend to spend most of their time eating to get ENOUGH. Why they don't eat much of anything else, I don't know.
@MeFilms5 жыл бұрын
There is a common misconception that Koalas get ‘drugged out’ or ‘high’ on eucalyptus leaves and that’s why they sleep a lot. This myth possibly arose as a way of explaining why Koalas sleep for up to 22 hours a day. They need more sleep than most animals because eucalyptus leaves contain toxins and are very low in nutrition and high in fibrous matter so they take a large amount of energy to digest. Sleeping for long periods is a strategy for conserving energy. Koalas and gliders are the only mammals which can tolerate the toxins in gumleaves but fortunately they don't make them 'high' or ‘drugged out’.

Every 5 years or so you get a massive front which wipes out massive areas. In the last 40 years there have been multiple devastating fires in Australia you just forget because we are bombarded with overly dramatic media coverage which makes everyone forget the last round of devastating fires . It's perfect conditions for it at the moment, lots of fuel and very hot & dry weather, whether this is down to climate change remains to be seen.
