I helped my cousin sort out a huge Victorian he inherited from his 96 year old Spinster/ school teacher Aunt. ( in 2002). She lived there her entire life and boy oh boy was it a time capsule chocked full of history. She was the only surviving child because her brother died in WW1. She inherited the house from her parents. Took us 4 days to sort thru the attic and 4 more for the basement. I took home a van load of lace linens and antique quilts. We also watched as an antiques dealer filled a large truck with antique furniture, art , pottery, glass and oriental carpets which at auction brought in $280,000. I thought it was dusty and smelly old junk! Who in the world would want old worn carpets and yellowed paintings of farm animals? Well, I was very wrong. It amazed me how much clutter she accumulated. How many sets of China can one old lady have? Why are there hundreds of glass goblets? Why does one woman need 6 closets of clothes? Boggles the mind. She had kept department store bags and hat boxes neatly piled in the attic for at least 5 decades ( About two 5 ft piles of folded store bags of stores closed in the 70’s and 80’s so it was a blast to remember my childhood). Bonwit Teller, Bergman’s, Bambergers, Gimbels, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hayne’s, Brooks Brothers, Lord & Taylor etc. The attic was filled with 5 trunks of Victorian gowns and walking suits. There were thousands of books tucked into every crevice in the attic stair way, stair landings and attic eaves. I was exhausted after a week and have memories to last a lifetime!

Ooooh so lucky! Did you film it?
@tgm27544 жыл бұрын
@@vegetariansuniteworldwide8091 We did not film it and I could just kick myself. At first I was so horrified by all the clutter that I naturally just wanted to get the heck out of there. The second visit was much better, like time travel, going through closets and drawers and cupboards and another closet and the linen room. Yes, the linen room was called “the linen press” and had many shelves with of white linens folded between tissue paper, craft paper or thick blue paper the color of Indian Ink, tied in a white ribbon.( laundry services back then wrapped every sheet set in this dark blue paper and ties the package like a gift). All the linens were white with embroidered or dancing ladies with baskets of flowers. 3 days in the attic. It was weird seeing boxes of beauty products that were 60 years old. There were mirrored compacts with little velvet puffs that were topped with a peach ribbon and velvet rosebud.... the detail was amazing. Even simple items like pens came in their original box, and folded directions were printed on tissue paper, neatly tucked into the box. I got the biggest kick out of seeing typed price tags with a knitted string and bow. Price tags had bows? AND the price tag also had a little picket with 2 extra buttons. Sales receipts were hand written in great detail, such as “ women’s white silk blouse , mother of Pearl buttons and lace collar by Milady Fashions of Deerfield Michigan. “ amazing. Those people had leisurely lives for sure. Hand written sales receipt! I also found foundation garments that were so weird. Heavy watered silk taffeta embroidered with ring and rings of silk thread that formed circular areas for the lady’s bumps and lumps. Silk stockings were neatly folded in tissue , in thin boxes that had pretty floral paper lids. Oh. My. Goodness. I really should write all this down, room by room and share it with my siblings.

Modern building of reasonable quality and significantly better than old building. In terms of construction science, materials, air quality and cost of operations. Old building let in crazy amounts of outside air, so in that respect the air quality is good so longer after it was built, but modern materials do not release anywhere near the amount of harmful chemicals. At least here in Germany. Maybe it is different for you guys in the US?

Yeah, 102 year old house is fairly old for us. There are definitely older houses -- many from the 1800s, some from the 1700s, and just a few from the 1600s. But, still finding a 100 year old house unrenovated with the original woodwork still there and unpainted is pretty rare. I actually live in one myself with my mom -- not nearly as big as Cole's, and no farm! She bought it in 1983 and it had not been updated ever. I mean, not just the nice wood still there, but the original electricity, wallpaper, windows (no storm windows), glass and porcelain doorknobs, push button light switches, overhead light fixtures. The only thing that was not original to 1919 when the house was built was the 1950s stove and sink. Original cast iron stove is still in the basement, though. Too heavy to move! We have painted the walls and updated the kitchen, bathroom (and added a half bath), the electricity (couldn't plug in the toaster and a hair dryer at the same time when we first moved in!), insulation, storm windows. But the rest is all original. Oh, had have the front porch rebuilt last year (had rotted out), but it's the same design as it was. A lot of maintenance keeping up an old house, but I truly love this house.

OMG! I’m working backwards in your videos and hadn’t watch the first house video. Goodness the work you have done in a year. Thanks for being respectful toward your grandfather. Every item in his home held a memory for him. You don’t have to keep anything but it’s nice that you took time to acknowledge that everything held value to him at a particular time in his life. The wood throughout is absolutely amazing.

Agreed! My family owned a beautiful home in South Georgia which is now a historical house since my 5th great uncle was the founder of the Elberta peaches. I recently found out that it’s up for sale for about $700,000.00 *ugh* which is way more than my family can afford right now. While I’ve never gotten the chance to meet all of my great grandmothers side of the family, I do wish that we could do the same like this guy did to his grandfathers house. I just hope who ever purchases my great uncles house next that they take great care of it and keep his history alive.

I love how respectfully you spoke of your grandfather and his possessions. I've been through this same thing both while mine was still living and then after and I have to say, we had some spirited debates over what was and was not rubbish. Anyways, I hope your parents and you are very proud of what you achieved and the hardworking, kind caring guy you are.

Same here .. I am the only child, care-giver to my elderly mum, and never had children, my father was an only child too, all his family is gone. When I pass, hubby and his family will have to deal with our things, which they really don't have much of an attachment to, esp my mum and dad's old stuff .. I have one cousin, over in England, I think I will pass photos to him .. good luck with your clean up! Cheers ..

My beautiful old home that was built in 1910, huge three story, four bedrooms. I have already sadly had to move from there. Now I'm starting to clean out my small one bedroom apartment next week. It all goes! If my children don't want things now or I haven't used something in the last year, it's gone. Cole & his family put a lot of hard work into removing old furniture & paper's. Incredible job, wow! 😇🙏💜

Zen would say; We'll see...Everything you own, owns you...As a builder/contractor for 3 decades, I saw 150K worth of work on the exterior...That house needs about 325K to make it Salable for a profit...

@@godbluffvdgg that depends if he wants to sell it. Not a smart move if you have a mortgage free home, why in the world would you want to move to another house, get into debt? Even if he brought it up to date, selling is a pain in the ass! When you have a gem like this that is handed down to you; you don't give it up. Not everyone wants to sell a home after getting it.

ROB-IN-PHILLY Wow! I don't see anywhere near $325k of anything needing to be done to this house! It's in gorgeous condition for the age. The original bathroom needs minimal work. Just needs a little cosmetic work - the tub and tile work on the floor is amazing and would be a shame if it was removed. The kitchen could use a little work to make it look a little more "farmhouse style" but it's completely functional as is - it could be made to look more like an original farmhouse kitchen for $10k-$15k if you know what you're doing. Again, gorgeous house that needs minimal work. Besides, this house isn't a flip, it's a family heirloom. I think it's ironic and hilarious that anyone might pay $325,000 to turn it into the "farmhouse" style so popular on KZbin, Pinterest and HGTV when it's ALREADY a farmhouse. I don't know...Maybe $325k in Philly contractor estimates! No disrespect intended.
@godbluffvdgg5 жыл бұрын
@@justathought354 We're both right...:)...Sure, you can go cheap and do the bare minimum to get it comfortably modern but...To me; it needs all the clapboards ripped off, then address the inevitable rot or insect damage, Roof, same thing, All new porch the eaves are shot...And THAT is just the front; in a quick glance...I shot the first number from the hip but, to do it right, total house, with new windows, doors, etc etc etc...You might be closer to 200K exterior only...I've been working on big houses like this in Swarthmore for decades...It's not unusual to put 300K into an old house like that...
