Very interesting! What I find most remarkable is that the Harappan civilization was so oriented towards trade and even conducted international trade all on the barter system. Any idea what they got in return when selling goods?

Thanks for sincerely making videos on such obscure topics only few might be interested in with such enthusiasm and consistency. I feel hopeful about the future generation when they have role models like you to look up to. Your level of detail and thoroughness is really commendable. I’m learning how someone with training in history questions the data they have from multiple sources and gleans information from them and keeps an open mind. Hopefully your channel reaches more people. I’m not a Hindi speaker myself but since you seem to be one, I’m wondering why don’t you make these videos in Hindi or provide subtitles in Hindi. They will reach so many more people. Also I’m glad you are venturing south of Vindhyas these days.

Thanks for these kind words. I have planned to start a Hindi Channel but I will first need to grow as a channel. I do everything on my own right now. And with my PhD, I don't have much time left. To start a new Hindi Channel I first need the help of someone. Hopefully, with the growth of this channel I would be able to hire someone and grow my time.

Very good narration. Post Vedic period it was a barter system Also it has been recorded that there were proto coins/primitive money post Vedic period, but still there are lack of evidences of this. Primitive money were similar to celtic rings made of lead material or sometimes lead rings coated with gold. Around 600 BC there was Acheamenid Empire, Cyrus the great, Darius and from Gandhara region there was a king Pushkarsin. The very first coin of India was Bent Bar, futher it was classified into 1/8, 1/16 Shatamanas, manas. Later Nanda/Maurya introduced Karshapanas/Panas, Mashakas (smallest unit of currency of that time). Mashakas was a weekly salary of labourers during that time and it has been recorded in Arthshastra Kautilya.

1:30 - another evidence supporting early Vedic period was before Harappa and Mohenjodaro. Silver is not found in early Vedic literature (Rigveda) but silver is definitely found in Indus cities (in small quantities). As well as bronze, etc. Yajurveda, Atharvaveda etc do mention silver, bronze, lead, tin, etc.

What is the significance of the number of punches and their shapes in the punched marked coin? For example, we see similar punches in both Muryan and Shunga coins. Why?
@JayVardhanSingh2 жыл бұрын
we don't know, some scholars speculate that these symbols belong to different authorities that issued and circulated these coins.

New dynasty ! stamp one more symbol.., instead of making all new coins by melting.

@@Narimann The number of punches is standardized, it doesn't change. And there seems to always be a "sun" image on the obverse (front).

And another question is that you mentioned shatamana coins as gold, and then when silver and copper coins were made you told that the heaviest coin was shataman of having 100 rattis..... so, shatamana coins was made of gold and silver too?
@jayabrataseal7270 Жыл бұрын
Sir, I did not understand one part of your lecture, you told that in ancient time price of silver was quite high, and you gave instance of 1unit of gold= 7 unit of silver.... and in prest day 1 unit of gold = 76 unit of silver.... then how we can say that value of silver was high then? Pls reply sir.... I really want to know about this
@michaelrudolph7003 Жыл бұрын
Today you have to give 76 units of silver to get one unit of gold. Back then you only needed 7 units because the value of the silver was so much higher. This is because gold has always been seen as the more valuable metal. If you assume the value of silver was the element that changed its value, then you would say that gold has greatly increased in value in terms of silver. It's just a comparison of each metal's trade value against the other. Hope that helps you.

Rig ved only knows abt copper also indicate its antiquity. We have bactrian camels in Indus seals but word for it only comes in later vedic period or later books when language is very different and evolved. Some king named Tirindera parsua is gifting bactrian camels (Ustra or ushta ) to vedic rishis. And it also shows where persians lived at that time somewhere near bactria.

My Indian friend asked me if I wanted to go to Punjab province with him. I told him that I would be willing to go but on the condition that we could go metal detecting at night. One Indian gentleman told me that if someone saw me metal detecting that I could get reported to the police would confiscate my metal detector. I would like to know what are the rules regarding metal detecting in India and would the police take my metal detector?
