My dad always said to find a Church that teaches the Bible. One that is grounded in The Word and not the world is so important. I’m blessed to have found one that is not so much about religious practice but about Jesus, Truth and biblical foundation.

On the little note of the use of "corn" when Jesse was sending David with grain, "corn" has an older somewhat defunct meaning of being a synonym for "grain". Remnants of it remain in such terms as "peppercorns" and "corned beef". Peppercorns can also be called "pepper grains" and corned beef is salts with salt _grains_ . This is a point I learned after reading the backstory for lembas in Tolkien, where it used "corn" to refer where the flour for lembas originated. It is just modern usage of the word has shifted so we now use it specifically for maize.

This drove me crazy reading the Decline and Fall, since it was written before widespread consumption of maize, and talked about "corn" in the context of ancient Rome quite a bit. Where did you source the explanation? I never could find a good text on how the meaning changed.
@TheMimiSard
@TheMimiSard 5 ай бұрын
@blurqeqoherds I think I specifically found the explanation in something that was talking about Lembas from Tolkien. I don't recall the exact place because that discovery would have happened circa 2004.

I just wanted to write this but I've been in a super dark place recently & I consider myself a Nihilist but listening to you guys talk & laugh about all this stuff going on in the Bible has soothed my mind. My parents never went to Church when I was growing up, so I was never exposed to any sort of religious teachings or what have you but having you guys talk about it so much, I feel like I'm finally beginning to understand all the good having faith can bring. I don't think I'll ever be able to convert but just learning about all this biblical stuff over the past couple of weeks has really done a lot for my mental health. I love listening to you guys talk & it makes these 4 walls less empty. So even as a person of no faith, thank you for making this podcast

I really appreciated Isaiah's aside on predestination vs free will (and I'm biased, I also fall into the "yes, to both" camp) and I want to come full circle on a thought I _think_ he was implying but didn't outright state. God decided in His own plan to bring a Messiah into the world, and then, even though human kings weren't His original plan for the nation of Israel, He decided to incorporate that into the Messianic plan and the Messiah ended up coming out of Israel's line of kings. So, furthermore, I think we can assume the Messiah would've come from Saul's line if he hadn't failed to seek God and repent in his kingship. Saul went his own way, so God just raised up a different king from which the Messiah would be desceended. This story is a _great_ example of the answer to the free will debate, because in two separate instances, something God intended to do in His overall plan _was_ accomplished, but humans had a level of individual choice regarding the finer details. It almost makes this whole concept something I can wrap my mind around.
@ivetterodríguez-j4k

I don't believe God's omniscience would require predestination. You can say God knows everything that will happen without saying he planned it from the beginning. That's my take on it anyway.

A little context on Benjamin, by the way, though you may get to it. At the end of Judges there was basically a civil war between the tribes when there was absolute depravity going on in Benjamin, very similar to the story of Lot on Sodom and Gomorrah (Judges as a book is a history of Israel's spiral into sin and depravity), and so the tribe was almost completely wiped out. They were truly the smallest tribe because the others nearly destroyed them all.

Some thoughts: The tribe of Judah was chosen to be the "Royal" tribe, from which all kings would come out of. By choosing a "Benjamite," was God setting up Saul to be a failure? Also, every great leader of Israel was a shepherd first, Saul was a cattleman. A Cattleman 'drives' the Cattle, a Shepherd 'calls' and leads the sheep.

God didn’t exactly set him up to fail, Saul just had all the things that Gods people wanted in a King. I think it’s more accurate to say that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Any man, even a man chosen by God, is still just a man.

First of all Goliath was either 6.9 or 9.9 in one of the versions he appears in as 4 cubits and a span and a second version has him at 6 cubits and a span like 2.06 meters or so. Look what u don't understand is that the sling was an awesome light and easy to make weapon that every Jewish boy would have mastered by puberty its not David who had an over-esteemed self image ... its Goliaths underestimated idea of young David that did him in that day. Love you guys, awesome channels the both of you. Great podcast, this has definitely helped me return to my faith, but not to a specific church yet. Curious to hear what you guys think about this theory i came to from my own studying, that is that the devil does not tempt us but merely gains possession of us by our own choosing to leave god, and it is actually servants of god who test us to find where we need help most before we die? This whole theory is based around the fact that Samael is a being commonly referenced, whenever he is, as being synonymous with the devil. However I found his oldest description to be from the Talmudic tradition of Rabbinic Judaism; where he is claimed to be satan in the story of job, and the angel of death from the plagues in egypt.

I never catch y’all live and I’m not entirely caught up either, I’m on the second Moses video, but I just got a couple questions I don’t know where else to ask. If the Old Testament was in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek why were the sermons traditionally given in latin? I’m sorry if my terminology isn’t correct been a long time since I’ve been in the church. Also, where in the Bible does it mention the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit? I know it’s something a lot of people struggle to grasp but my struggle with it is it’s origin in the text. Feel free to wait and answer these in your next podcast or here, I just have no clue what y’all stream on or how a super chat works 😅

If you have ever written a story, you know that sometimes the characters just... they don't do what you want them to do. One of my friends says that this is how they see God. God is the author, & God has the power to make the character do something, but He doesn't because you have free will.

(I literally got into Skillet because they are christian. christopunk aidan mattis) "worthy" vs "merit" is what gets me. You may never merit it, you may never earn it, but you are still worthy of God. Tax collectors are hated because they were jewish people enforcing roman imperialism on other jews, or so I've been told. That & I've also been told that they were skimming for their own pockets. OK BUT CONFESSION IS ACTUALLY HONESTLY HEALTHY FOR YOU it was like counselling before therapy was a thing. Instead of talking it out with a psychologist, you would talk things out with a priest. I've spoken to a roman catholic priest & he said he was OK with people going to confession less because they had therapy instead. (I keep editing my comment now but I should just LISTEN like I was doing in the first half) Many churches do not accept you or I, but studying at home is a closer & more intimate way than churches that have pageantry (which I love but yk) & structure & resentment. As a queer & FNMI catholic, the church & I have beef, but you just need to find the meaning that sounds truest to you. I started attending a church of the first peoples, populated mostly by FNMI people, & as a Métis folk catholic, it is the most welcome I've felt in a long time. The last time I went to any other church I got called a name & almost got kicked out if I hadn't already been leaving. Honestly, questioning things & losing my faith helped me to learn more & get a deeper connection. It is healthy to question things. Don't be christian because you were told to, be christian as a verb. BE christian. Choose to be christian.

I know you have both talked about more weird Bible coming soon. But I wanted to ask if you could do an episode or video about something. I am a methodist, and have been having a hard time with the current separation and factionization happening within the methodist religion. Many of our religious leaders have tried to simplify it to being either you support lgbtq communities or are against them. I know this is not the entirety of it and probably isn't even most of it. I know it may be a difficult topic to cover, but I would really appreciate it if you would talk about either the reasons for the splitting and what is based in biblical fact and what is being used incorrectly, or even the more difficult topic of how lgbtq and specifically homosexuality is talked about in the Bible. It has been really hard seeing people I have known all my life just stop talking to each other and leaving the church over this and I can't tell you how much it would mean for you guys, whom I greatly respect, to help give me some answers. I understand if it isn't something you can do though.
