@@Joeman4627It isn't that easy. Fundamentally there is a divergence in my personal brain and perhaps the commenter where we WANT so desperately to believe but I didn't even believe in Santa Claus(and not to be sacrilegious or disrespectful but any and all deities are just as real in my brain) however we still WANT something that fills that lack. There's a mix of Nietzsche and Kant that talks about this. I've read the bible, I grew up catholic, got a religious education. I wish I could believe and have faith. I just can't however.

It’s always refreshing to see a very firm believer of Christianity also believe in the science of the world. I think if god did create the world, it was created with intention and the way we understand it today. Like god created the earth with intention of plate tectonics and controls spaces and all that stuff that’s an interesting thought to me and as someone who enjoys learning about science and religion this is very cool to hear from you guys

Man, I should've been listening to this podcast sooner. I really like you guys' take on Hell. It never sat well with me that God would close the door FOREVER. If one has the Spirit of God in them--or even if one doesn't but WANTS the Spirit within them--then I believe they should be saved, even if they never received the Spirit in this life (and even if they made some BIG mistakes which they regret). However, there are people who actively do NOT want the Spirit within them. Those people, I believe, might CHOOSE Hell, which (to me) is separation from God. ... Even then, I can't help but imagine that there may be angels who descend into the fiery pit, hoping to save even those who do not wish to be saved.
@neonlovegalaxy
@neonlovegalaxy Ай бұрын
I love this thought. I don't claim to know the mind or morality of God or angels, but if I were an angel and God was willing then I'd want to stage a search and rescue operation into the fiery pit to bring back as many souls as possible. What is love but the willingness to brave the absolute worst to give someone the absolute best? I'd like to think God understands that, and that people who end up in the darkest places--not understanding why they are there and that they don't actually need to be there--could and would be rescued by valiant angels fighting through the blackest night of the soul to save them. It's like rescuing a trapped animal who is scared and angry and lashes out in confusion. You understand that the animal is trying to escape from you because it doesn't understand you, and if it did then it wouldn't be afraid or angry. There are a lot of people like that on Earth, and I don't just mean as relates to God. I also mean as relates to other people, to each other. There is so much confusion that results in fear and anger.

so, an easy way for me to confidentially say the whole fire and brimstone description of hell is mostly if not entirely metaphorical is everything is contextualized under Jewish understanding. "Lake of fire" specifically i think is a call back to Daniel. "The Ancient of Days Reigns 9 “I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. 10 A river of fire was flowing And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were serving Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court convened, And the books were opened. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was killed, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire." Daniel 7:9-11 in this image a beast is already killed destroyed, and its corpse is what is being thrown into the fire. Now, we can argue about "Lake" vs "River" but personally i think this is semantics. the imagery is strikingly similar and I have a hard time believing its an accident. Especially considering the most harrowing imagery of lake of fire comes from revelations which pulls primarily from the old testament to get its material. if you dont know the old testament you dont have a snowballs chance in hell (HAH i crack myself up) of being able to remotely understand revelations. So when revelations says people are thrown into the lake of fire.... These two images are almost certainly made to sound similar on purpose. and also i think if you REALLY sit with it for like 5 seconds it just... doesent make sense. God literally purged the Canaanites from their land over sacrificing their children by burning them alive, God literally stating the very idea of it had never crossed his mind for these people to do such a thing and yet here they were doing it. THAT God is going to be so petty about people not doing things his way hes going to throw them in eternal fire and keep them alive forever while he does it? this is a million times worse than anything the Canaanites did. I cant tell if the idea of that is a Satanic deception or a silly idea but honestly at this point in my life nothing short of God himself pulling me aside and saying "here lemme show you" would convince me that literal eternal fire is the price of rejecting salvation.

I've seen a pretty good argument for that what happens after you die, is you lie in your grave until judgement day. Basically sleeping, but you're dead. Then once you are judged you either are welcomed into heaven, or you are cast into this lake of fire with the fallen angels. That is when you literally die, like your soul is annihilated, referred to the "second death". All the while the fallen angels will suffer forever for their wickedness. Either way if im wrong, hell is not good lol

I just wanted to request that can you cover a topic like, how to look at Bible when you know that many things were inspired or not real. For example, creation might be inspired from other creation myths, story of flood was inspired by other flood events and so on. It is something that bothers me many times and I would really love an episode on that. I look at it sometimes like Moses who was a knowledgeable person, since he was raised richly, studied a lot and he penned down everything with the grace and inspiration of God.

Christ explaining the afterlife to us is like a 4d being trying to explain what the fourth dimension is like. While we have a rough understanding, we are physically unable to fully grasp it because we are limited by a 3rd dimension. I think God using math and physics to create the world is comparable to the ‘4d games,’ that are starting to crop up. We are getting a snippet of what it is like, but can never fully understand it.

The egg is a pretty useless analogy for the Trinity. The physical states of water (solid, liquid, gas) would be better because ice, liquid water, and water vapor are all equally water. It falls apart because water cannot be all three at once. A man being a father, son, and husband helps because a man can be all three at once and the relationship he has with his son, father, and wife is distinctly different, but I prefer the example of man being mind (spirit), body, and soul. This also helps explain what it means to be made in the image of God.

Another metaphor for the Trinity that's not perfect but is pretty decent is water. Water can take the form of solid, liquid and gas but it's always all still H2O regardless of it's form just like every member of the Trinity is always God regardless of form. The only problem is that water can only be one form at a time.

I feel really dumb for asking this, but I also feel like my brain is short-circuiting due to the religious dogma that was pounded into my head as a kid. Is the implication really that God doesn't send non-believers to a firey pit of hell and that you're given the chance to repent? And that if you believe, you're good to go? I feel like that's what I'm hearing and it makes me sad for little me who couldn't reconcile the God of my faith and the God who I was told was real. Who would send my Catholic friends to hell because they pray to saints. Who would send me to hell because I feel differently than how I'm supposed to. Super frustrating, but very comforting.

For me personally, without having yet finished this podcast, I think the concept of the afterlife is very very vague and mysterious in the Bible. I would encourage you to look for every reference to the afterlife in the Bible and look at it in context and also what the original words they used are. Because there are differences between Tartarus, Gehenna, and Sheol. And as they talk about in this podcast, the Jewish concept of the afterlife is very different than what Christians today believe and so it's important to think about what the Jews believed at the time the New Testament was written. I don't think we can confidently say who is going to heaven and who is going to hell. Christians have tons of debates about this. Billy Graham famously said that he thought people from other religions could possibly go to heaven. Some Christians are Christian annihilationists (which is an interesting doctrine you should check out). I think because we don't really know what it's going to be, we should play it safe and get on the right side of God no matter what. Even if there is no eternal suffering, it might be best that you act as if there might be and play it safe. But because there may not be eternal suffering, why would you let this be the issue that takes you away from the faith? I personally think that Catholics are just about as valid as any other Christian denomination and they sin too just like us. There's no reason why they, or you, or any of us would go to hell if we truly have been saved by God from our sins and have received salvation and forgiveness. Don't let this issue separate you from God and I encourage you to get back into praying, reading and maybe even attending church. You won't regret it, I promise.

@@mattkeene3084 Interesting. It might have been a spiritual experience on some level. I’ve done some research on this topic myself, and have discussed this with others before. And, well, I find the whole thing a bit unclear. I’ve heard of people having seen things, while dead, that they shouldn’t have known about. Like a shoe on the top of the building they were in, that they’ve never seen before, or knew it was there prior. I’ve also talked to people who haves died and they experienced nothing, as if they were asleep while they were dead. On this matter, I take a physicalist perspective on humanity, which is that humans are not body, soul, and spirit, in the traditional understanding but just an existence that can only exist embodied, hence the reason for the resurrection. And that the descriptors of body, soul, and spirit mean something else entirely. But things like I mentioned before do get me wondering for sure on the subject matter. As for hell, I’ve definitely done some research on the subject matter. I find that the imagery the New Testament uses is most often from the old. Like hell, which can be translated from the word Gehenna, is specifically found in the book of Jeremiah. It’s a judgement against Israel when they sacrificed their children to the God’s of other nations. That judgement gets associated with the final judgment like in Mark 9:47-48. As for your example, interestingly enough, that doesn’t talk about Gehenna. It’s just outer darkness. This imagery comes from both Exodus (Exodus 10:21-23) and Isaiah (Isaiah 60:1-2). From what I understand, darkness can also be associated specifically with an area that has the powers of heaven judged (Matthew 24:29, Jeremiah 8:1-2). But the image may not overlap. Overall, the image seems like it’s dealing with a type of Exodus, and those being cast out into that area, whose powers have been shaken and judged, are like the Egyptians. As for the weeping and gnashing of teeth, that imagery is used for sadness and anger (Psalm 112:10). They are kept outside when the Lord comes back to sit on his glorious throne. And those, who are outside, whose God’s have been or are being judged, are excluded from the event and wait for judgement. They will weep in sorrow and gnash their teeth in anger against the Lord. That’s kind of what the imagery gives off. From what I understand, after that, those in that place will be slaughtered by the Lord and his armies, which are the believers (Revelation 17:11-14, Revelation 19:11-15, Revelation 19:19-21, Malachi 4:1-3). This should parallel the book of Joshua when they enter into the land of their inheritance.

I can see how it can be insulting for some. im actually considering giving the bible a try. * My family have tried to introduce me to the bible through hermenautics, homiletics,escatology apologetics,exegesi...But thats just a bit too much for my brain to process, this poscast seems to be a good way to learn.

It should be noted that the one time the Bible refers to Tartarus by name (2 Peter 2:4), it's referring to the fallen angels which are being held in chains until the day of judgment. I'm not necessarily a "layers of hell" kind of guy, but I do think fallen angels not only being in the Greek/Roman's deepest, darkest pits is interesting, but they're also in chains down there. I guess they're an extra security measure, but I'd assume this would also mean there's different layers in a sense. Personally, Hitler hanging out with an otherwise good person that just never gave their life to Christ (we all have non-Christian friends) would be rather odd. I don't think it's unreasonable to think certain individuals based off their sins pave their way to a different part of hell.

In revelations 20 it states that the seas will give up their dead to be judged, so it’s not impossible that those who were not Christian will be removed from hell and given a second chance during the end times

@@mysteriousstranger5873 The same verse you're referencing says that hell also gives up its dead in order to be judged. This isn't a "second chance" to repent. The next verse literally says death and hell were thrown into the lake of fire, along with everyone whose name isn't in The Book of Life. This is the last judgment.

I can’t say anything about the part about Lucifer. If he was human, I’d say definitely, but I don’t know how the rules work for angels. Hypothetically if he could I’d imagine one of the more powerful demons would take his place. Hell itself wouldn’t disappear though, he didn’t create it, he’s just it’s number one prisoner.

John 3:16 is one of the few verses I have memorized. Many of them I know vaguely, but john 3 verse 16 is the one most catholics (christians?) have memorized because "it symbolizes our faith distilled into one verse" 1:08:50 it's "the cornerstone of all christianity itself" as wendigoon put it. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that all who believe in Him may be saved. Or smth like that. "For God so loved that world that he sent his only begotten son whosoever believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life" is what wendigoon said so I'm not so far off. The other ones are genesis 1:2, this is the day the lord has made let us rejoice & be glad what is that psalm 118:4?, & only the wicked run when there is noone chasing them, the righteous are as bold as a lion. Those are some of my faves, but ofc there's also corinthians about love & the shepherd one but those I only vaguely know & idek the books/chapters/verses. My mom likes the one like "these are the children the lord has blessed me with" but idr remember it.

24:40 I disagree with what Wendigoon said here about God becoming two at the point that Jesus was decided to be sent down to earth as the final sacrifice. I think that Jesus made it clear that he was the Word and John makes it clear that the Word was with God at the beginning of time. I also think it's possible that some of the "angel of the Lord" appearances in the OT may have been Jesus. I just don't agree with the notion that God split himself into two beings and then later into a third being. I think the Trinity was present since the beginning of creation and this at least partly why God says "let US make man in OUR image" in Genesis.

Pretty sure many men of God and disciples In The Bible had illnesses. I don't believe God is worried about this physical body. He allows things in our life and changes it when needed to do His work. We bare the consequences of our sin and of living in a sinful world with corrupt DNA. Satan also heals so we need to not base our physical state on being in His will but learn to be so near to God to have peace in all circumstances.

36:20 Hate to be "That guy" but you quoted scripture without context. Rev 22:19 does say that if you take from this book God will take from you, but IT SAYS THE OPPOSITE LITERALLY ONE SENTENCE EARLIER: Rev 22:18-19: "I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and [j]from the holy city, which are written in this book." (NASB) It is very very very (imho) explicit in that the author is stating "The prophecies in this book are to be taken as they were originally written, and do not attempt to alter (add nor remove) the prophecies because they are God's prophecies as he intended them."

I'm glad you guys are Trinitarian but I don't think I've ever heard so much heresy about the Trinity espoused in one video. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are all coeternal and there has never been a moment in which they have all three not existed. The Father eternally begets the Son and the Holy Ghost eternally proceeds from them both. St. Thomas Aquinas speaks of the Trinity as subsistent relations. The Father is the lover, the Son is the loved one, and the Holy Spirit is their act of love. In short, subject, object, verb. They also can not be seen as parts of God. God is absolutely simple and by definition has no discreet particulars in his being. He is not composed of the three persons, the three persons simply are the necessary result of the very nature of God. Also, sin is not a thing in itself. Classical Christian teachings holds that sin is a privation of good. God is goodness itself and it therefor follows that he did not create sin but God created everything which means that sin isn't a thing. Satan is the first to sin but he did not create this "thing" we call sin, he misplaced a good. The good he misplaced is power, instead of rightfully submitting power to God, he decided he was better fit for it. Evil and sin can only destroy since there is nothing of substance to it.

I’m more on your side of the fence as far as it Trinitarian believe. With that being said, I’ve never heard it put the way that you have stated here in this post though. @@stevenpina1983 Saint Thomas has said: "Therefore, as within the Godhead the way whereby God is in God as the known in the knower, is expressed by what we call Son, who is the Word of God, so the way by which God is in God as the beloved is in the lover is brought out by acknowledging in God a Spirit, who is the love of God. And so, according to the rule of the Catholic Faith, we are directed to believe in the Spirit." I hope this can be edifying and blessing to you.

A thing not really discussed or left out in the episodes is about the time the parts of the bible was written down. Lots of it was oral tradition passed down from generations of generations of people and here is a podcast discussing it like it was fact. Especially the new testament from which the first texts were from 100 years AD. The bible is not the book of god. It's the book of people trying to comprehend their Universe and their texts got passed down to us. Still really invested and will continue to follow the series.

I've thought about the WALLS OF JERICHO and think I have figured out the logical answer . Answer is the story is missing some details. Basically all the Racket created by the horns combined with the unrest inside the walls covered up the sound of the bottom of the walls being dismantled . It said ALL the walls came down at once but a very fast moving domino effect might reasonably at that time be described as all at once .

When I hear people talk about hell, or Sheol, or the "down place", I notice that they often take one description and run with it, as if that's the whole thing. I think that's like looking at a Siberian gulag or volcano, and extrapolating all existence on Earth from that little piece. Earth is a big place. Some places suck, and some places are pretty not bad.

God is talking to his being which, at least would be the father and the son that we were made in there likeness of. That likeness mainly being that we would be creatures of free will that would be able to choose from right and wrong.

The Holy Trinity was never difficult for me to understand, especially if we are made in God's image. Humans have a mind, a body, and a spirit/soul. God is the mind, Jesus is the body, and the Holy Spirit is the spirit/soul. People seem to have trouble wrapping their minds around a 3-fold nature of being/existence, rather preferring a dualistic view like good vs evil, dark vs light, death vs life etc. This view, in my opinion, rejects the Holy Spirit in its narrowness. The Holy Spirit is the very aspect of both God and humans that are neither black or white but grey instead. In essence, it is the very aspect that unites all through our shared divinity but also our shared needs as humans. It's something that is sorely lacking in our modern times. There is no grey, no nuance, no humanity, no compassion, no embracing of the Holy Spirit which explains many of the problems in the world today.
