Let’s just take a second to appreciate how cool the Punic Wars are. The Punic Wars lasted from 246 BCE to 146 BCE with interwar periods. In the second punic war, the largest and most famous one, well over a million men fought and that is putting it lightly, it’s got fighting monsters, yes monsters, blood oaths and two rival families fighting for the fate of the world, it’s so fantastical that it actually happened. would also like to take second to appreciate just how much rested on these conflicts between Rome and Carthage. They fought for control of what was to them, the whole world. If Rome hadn’t had it’s tenacity and prowess, and had it lost The Punic Wars, our world would be so unimaginably and vastly different that we wouldn’t be able to comprehend it. Just to scratch the surface, modern languages, the legal system, our roads, welfare system and politics just to name a few. But our world would also be different in the way of culture and the history would be incredibly different and completely alien to us. Just read the responses and yes this is pretty much just straight yanked from Extra History, go watch their Punic War episodes they are really good!! I can also recommend reading livy's book on the second punic war, or a podcast about it because it is an amazingly boring read

To put that loss of a hundred thousand men in a storm into perspective: ancient agriculture and transport was way less efficient than in modern times, and population density was way lower. So in modern times it's as if modern Italy lost a million men in a disaster, and they didn't even stop to reconsider what they were doing. Ancient civilizations were indeed huge risk-takers.

not nessecarily. people estimate that the population of rome during the punic war would have been between 5 million to a whopping 13 million. if we compromise and say 10 million, then that would have been a 6th of the modern population of italy (60 million). so rather than convert 100 thousand to 1 million, its more like 600 thousand.

And, romans actually imposed a super-harsh peace treaty after the 2nd Punic war, after which Carthage never recovered and became an easy target for Rome in the 3rd War. Weird how similar this is to WW1 & WW2. First war being a somewhat static war of attrition in which the side with the greater amount of resources wins. It ends in exhaustion of both sides with a treaty that has harsh reparation payments for the losing side. This causes resentment on the losing side and thus they start a second, more mobile war a generation later, in which the winner of the first war is nearly conquered but wins again in the end.

A theory about the "dragon" that Livy was talking about is that it was actually a long extinct species of Constrictor that lived in North Africa at the time. The Romans hunted them to extinction, and due the fact that they lived in the desert, no remains have been found due to being buried under miles of sand thousands of years ago. Edit: I guess it would make more sense to say, "buried across miles of sand." And yes, the Nabeul Peninsula isn't a desert, but they could have likely lived in desert regions. Also, I'm not the one who came up with the theory, and I'm just writing this from memory, so some things may be wrong.

Jesus Christ died for our sins, rose from the dead, and gives salvation to everyone who has faith in him. True faith in Jesus will have you bear good fruit and *drastically* change for the better! Those led by the Holy Spirit do not abide in wickedness. God is three in one; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him. Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. They know not God, read his word, and their religion is in vain. Do not hear them, they will mislead you, the lost cannot guide the lost.

When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil. I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God.

Great forshadowimg from Hannibal's mom. She predicted Drew Durnil 2000 years ahead. She was truly a megachad map enjoyer. 20:36

This really should be named the Roman Neptune war. Since the sea did far more damage than the carthaginians.
