This video is about the dumbest moves a head coach can possibly make - and that the coach actually made - end of course, in diasaster. From the NBA finals, to an NFL Playoff Game, to a wild card in the MLB, and even the Olympics, these coaches really messed up, big time.

Not giving it to Lynch at the 1 isn't close to as bad as Kyle Shanahan's play calling in the second half of sb 51. One can make a case to pass on that play, you can't for not running the ball up by 25 points.

Game 5 turned into a panicky clusterfuck of choke. Forcing KD to play and reinjure his calf. Calling a timeout up by 6 with 3 minutes left. Not calling a timeout after. Cousins goaltending call. I don't blame the Knicks' 1994 loss on Starks. While Ewing did good work at grabbing rebounds, blocking shots, and facilitating the ball while attracting double teams, he ultimately failed at being the centerpiece of the Knick offense. I place much of the blame on him, and the video acknowledges as much by referring to Starks' necessary heroics in previous games. But without Ewing being able to score even remotely efficiently (.363 shooting , 18.9 ppg on 21 shots per game), the Knicks were forced to turn to the rest of their options. While Derek Harper was a steady and strong presence on both sides of the floor, he lacked the offensive firepower that Starks could occasionally bring. Yes, that word. Occasionally. I'm a huge fan of John Starks, and he was probably my sports childhood hero as a Knick fan. But even I admit that he was the streakiest player that I've ever seen. His overconfidence, which was helpful at times such as when he had to go Mano a Mano with MJ, was what helped the undrafted 6'3" shooting guard become an NBA starter and one-time all star. But it was also the reason behind his streakiness. His jump shot always looked like he was playing roulette - the shots looked great when they snapped the nets, but awful when they clanged violently against the side of the rim. So to rely on that streakiness was potentially fatal. With Ewing being almost completely neutralized on offense (he had a couple of good games, at best), they rode the coattails of IMO the streakiest offensive players in the NBA to game 7, then died by his streakiness. The Knicks probably wouldn't have even been in the position to reach game 7 and witness Starks' 2-18 meltdown without his help in games 1-6. www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/1994-nba-finals-knicks-vs-rockets.html

You can argue that Viktor Tikhonov pulling Vladislav Tretiak in the "Miracle on Ice" game wasn't a bad coaching mistake. STARTING him in that game WAS!!!! Tretiak was actually not playing well in the Olympic games that year (by his established high standards) Myshkin actually played MORE minutes, and was playing BETTER than Tretiak was. Tretiak had also let in soft goals against Canada. Tretiak had actually given up 8 goals on just 50 shots in the Olympics (roughtly an 80% save percentage, to Myshkin's 88%) Myshkin also started the following game against Sweden.

As an Os fan, people really don't understand the reason why Britton didn't play. Britton was our closer. Personally, I hate closers and the fact that they only pitch to end a game. If Britton can go 2 scoreless innings (something he had done multiple times on the season) but the Os don't score then who do you turn to? You don't really have anyone left with a lot of postseason experience and Britton was basically the only dude who closed for us that year. It was a really tough decision but at the end of the day, the best pitcher in baseball was a situational guy. We never got into the situation that needed Britton to come in. That's just my opinion on the whole thing but what do I know

The closer is possibly the most mentally and emotionally taxing position in all of sports other than maybe kicker in football, but even then you kick fewer balls in a career than a closer pitches in half a season. And missing a handful of pitches is the difference between a great career, and losing your job altogether. A few blown saves is the difference betwen being among the best paid players and getting cut. Closers are by far the best paid relievers as well. and it requires a level of clutch and focus that no other position in baseball requires, except pinch hitter, but theres no such thing as a pinch hitter that only pinch hits in do or die spots.

@@SuccimusPrime Which is more mentally taxing? Coming into a game to face a teams best hitter with a runner on 2nd in the 7th up by 1, or facing the bottom 3 in a lineup up by 3 to start the 9th? This whole thing about the mental toughness required of a closer is a myth, and has cost teams alot of games.

In the "Red Right 88" segment, you talked about the possibility of Sipe spiking the ball to stop the clock late. That was not allowed at that time. It would have been an intentional grounding penalty.

Another honorable mention: Bill Belichick letting Ahmad Bradshaw score in Super Bowl XLVI to conserve game time for the drive. Yes, it was Brady, but he had been largely ineffective aside from the end of the first half, and the Pats were up 17-15 at the time. The FG would have left the Pats with 20 seconds and no timeouts, but Brady would just need to throw a couple quick outs to Hernandez to get into FG range and let Goatkowski kick the game winner, whereas needing the TD meant the Giants could blanket the end zone, which was dangerous given that Gronk was playing hurt.

Addition to Victor Tikhonov's replacement of Tretiak: American Mark Johnson asked Soviet Viacheslav Fetisov years later about the decision to pull Tretiak, and Fetisov replied, "Coach crazy!" Tikhonov also never trained his team on pulling their goaltender at the end of the game. He also later blamed overconfidence for the loss after the USSR humiliated the Americans 10-3 the night before the opening ceremonies.

Pete Carroll has had an illustrious career. Two National Championships with the Trojans, he won a Super Bowl and could very well win another before it's all said and done. But it won't matter even if he wins four straight Super Bowls, his career will forever be defined by not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch.

The Buck Showalter one in context makes a little more sense. Yes, it was dumb not to use Britton but you have to remember a few things. 1. The Orioles offense was awful in that game. They had 4 hits on the night and their last hit came in the 6th inning with the game still tied at 2-2. They only had one baserunner after that; a walk in the 7th. 2. The Orioles 2016 bullpen was really good. Brad Brach, Mychal Givens, Darren O'Day, and fucking Vance Worley all had ERA's under 4. They had Donnie Hart who, in 22 appearances, had a 0.49 ERA. The worst arm out of the pen was arguably Dylan Bundy, who had a 4.02 ERA. 3. It was clear the Orioles had no offense going so Buck Showalter was in it for the long haul after he exhausted all of his other relievers. Chris Tillman started the game and only was able to go 5 innings and the rest of the playoff rotation would have been Kevin Gausman (who pitched 2 days before the WC game so he was unavailable), Yovani Gallardo, and Wade Miley. That meant the only starter or guy who can go in long relief on the WC roster was Ubaldo Jimenez because you put as many bullpen arms on the WC roster as you can because you don't need starters you can't use. 4. Ubaldo Jimenez was pitching very well at the time. August and September of 2016 were arguably Jimenez's two best months in Baltimore. He had a 3.92 ERA in August and a 2.31 ERA in September. Buck Showalter is a manager who plays the hot hand and goes by match-ups and numbers. It just happened to be that Ubaldo Jimenez, theoretically, was the right pitcher for that situation in his mind. I have always argued that bringing in Britton to pitch delays the inevitable for the Orioles. Their offense that night was horrendous and if it wasn't for a Mark Trumbo HR they wouldn't have any runs anyway because their other three hits were all singles; none of which in the same inning. If they use Britton, it would have just pushed Jimenez into even later innings use because the game was still tied and I would have rather had Britton in the game with a lead if the Orioles were able to muster up any sort of offense.

Love your videos but you should double check that most powerful runner, that year Lynch had a serious problem getting it in from the one yard line, he scored one of 5 attempts from the one. Im not saying that the Seahawks made the best decision but they had reasoning to not hand the ball to lynch, he wasn't quite beastmode from that part of the feild that year.

And YOU should double check your memory of that game. Marshawn Lynch had been dominating the Pats all day, to the point where he was going to get Super Bowl MVP. Or Wilson could have just thrown it to him while he was wide open on that very play . . .
