The cartoon writers know they must work with a limited budget, and pace themselves, refraining from including pointless filler scenes that then wear out the audience's patience. The live-action movie writers are under the delusion they have an effectively unlimited budget, and include all the pointless filler scenes they foolishly believe are "essential," believing they can force the studio to increase the budget if they go over it in the course of filming these scenes.
@therondayview7684

@@longtsun8286 Also, the TV shows know they have a responsibility to an audience of millions across many generations. The movies are lucky if they get an audience big enough to pay the studio executives' Christmas bonuses. (Aw, who am I kidding? Those execs really earn their bonuses...)

I feel like this movie has a genuinely good character arc for Barry Allen, honestly one of the best character arc in the DCEU, about learning to overcome the worst impulses that have stuck with us our entire lives…which is ironically hindered or outright buried by the worst impulses that the franchise/studio itself just can’t shake.
@Strangerz64
@Strangerz64 Жыл бұрын
I didn't get any of that. I doubt the writer did either. The film is compromised as most of these films are by the need to provide fan service and create a revenue stream as opposed to telling a good story. Notice how Flash kind of saves his dad, but not his mom. Reminds me of No Way Home where all boys come back with their super powers, none of the girls do, and Aunt May dies, but can't come back even though the main implication of that film's multiverse is that Dr. Strange's magic can bring *anyone* back from the dead and given *anyone* a second chance. (if Sony can merchandise it that is.) lol. Hollywood is so phony.
@ThePonderer
@ThePonderer Жыл бұрын
@@Strangerz64 I think that’s a very paranoid reading of No Way Home. I also don’t think it’s really relevant at all to what I’m talking about. Regarding the Flash, I feel like the arc I’m talking about becomes especially clear on repeat viewings- from childhood Barry is someone who gets hung up on finding the “perfect” solution to a problem, and after his mom dies that instinct basically dictates his entire life. He’s unable to advance at his job, is too slow solving cases, and is incapable of focusing his life on anything but his dad’s incarceration or fully accepting his mom’s death, and his fixation on those things has clearly stunted him socially as well as professionally. Barry’s a guy stuck trying to find the perfect answer to problems where none exists, and by the end of the film that trait manifests in its worst possible extreme in the form of Dark Flash, who sets the entire plot in motion in his endless looping quest to find the perfect answer to a problem that can’t be solved. He’s the ultimate example of how Barry’s inability to compromise or even moderate his need to fix everything could destroy him physically and mentally. It’s a shame then that the scene where that idea apotheosizes is when the film decides to crap itself with creepy CGI cameos.

I legit thought at the beginning of the babies scene that there were some baby dolls on some of the cribs that the nurses were using to train or whatnot and the Flash would be confused trying to find the real babies among them. Then I realized they were supposed to be real babies and then all bets were off when he put one of them inside of a microwave oven for no reason at all! The microwave won´t stop the inertia affecting the baby when he moves him really fast, as I think the movie implies, unless it is equipped with inertial dampeners from the Enterprise. For a moment there I thought the absurd would scalate further and he would eat the baby to solve his caloric deficiency nonsense.

I don't have exact memory of it because I was so shocked at how bizarre it was but I think he put the baby in the microwave so it would be protected from a fire blast. I remember just thinking.... Is this really where they are going with the film??? It took me out of the movie immediately

Welcome back Alachia! I was just thinking about your channel the other day, wondering what you've been up to. Very glad to see your return. Great review as always. DC should've introduced Thomas Wayne Batman in the Flash. He was one of the best aspects of Flashpoint, and they already had a great actor lined up for the role in Jeffery Dean Morgan. They blew it! My basic reactions were: Michael Keaton's Batman: I was invested and enjoyed it every time he was on screen. Unfortunately his story is just cut short and sort of goes unresolved. If you understand the direction The Flash originally was going to go in though, it makes me all the more disappointed. Sasha Calle's Supergirl: I was invested and enjoyed it every time she was on screen. For what LITTLE she was given, she was probably one of the better parts of the movie - In my opinion. Her story was in concept interesting. THEY JUST NEVER FOCUSED ON IT. Ezra Miller's Flash: Interesting, and had potential. Ultimately there is a good arc there, everything is there, but rarely focused on. The whole movie can be summarized as: Cool concepts, Some great scenes, and there is a good movie in there, but as a whole - a trainwreck that has too many cameos and makes me worried about the DCU/DCEU as a whole. I already have little faith in James Gunn, I kind of find him to be up there with Joss Whedon in terms of writing style and character writing (Or down, considering I don't really enjoy many of their works. The only movies I really enjoyed by James Gunn were GOTG 2 - Although I don't exactly plan on watching 3, Slither, and THE Suicide Squad) and if this is what WB and Gunn consider to be a masterpiece? We are as good as doomed. *Also Ezra microwaved babies.*

You’ve hit the nail on the head Alachia. All the stupid multiverses do is make it impossible for me to invest in a character. I have no idea who is who in the MCU currently and I couldn’t possibly care less. I went back in time with Steve Rogers at the end of Endgame and that’s where I’m staying. With DC, I gave up when they dumped the current Superman.

Welcome back, Alachia, great to see you as always. I had fun with The Flash when I saw it and would probably have given it a B- on my way out of the theater, but now that it's had time to settle I think I would give it an overall C for the enjoyable mess that it is. Totally agree with you that Flashpoint Paradox is a far better film, but I think it would have been a lot harder to pull off within the Snyderverse/DCEU. They just didn't do enough with any of the JL characters to get you emotionally invested in them the way the DCAU series did. As for Muschietti's defence of the subpar CG being "It was intentional because that's how Barry sees things inside the Speed Force" - what a load of old bollocks, I don't buy it for a second. The WB AT&T regime gave this movie the green iight in order to kick off another series of loosely connected DC projects designed to grow HBO Max; then when the studio ownership changed, the postproduction budget likely got drastically reduced and they had to go the cheap route on the VFX, as well as do some hasty reshoots. I think the studios need to take a major step back after this summer of flaccid tentpoles, to reevaluate their whole approach toward franchises and how to build upon established IP. But that's a whole other microwaveful of babies.

They could even have had Elongated Man and Ant Man along for the ride. Point is, we know who these characters are. The thing with the flashpoint paradox is, that most people who watch that movie will have cared about the DC universe that it existed in. The problem with the DCEU is that nobody gives a shit about it. It's a gigantic mess. James Gunn has already told the world what his plans are for the DC universe, and so everybody understands that this Flash movie is not going to be one that's worth investing in. Which means it's a terrible idea to do a Flashpoint story for Barry's first real introduction in the DCEU. So you don't want what is effectively the last movie that will wave goodbye to the DCEU to say "hey, we're going to introduce you to a warring Aquaman and Wonder Woman, and introduce the idea of Thomas Wayne Batman. It just makes no sense and risks confusing an audience that hasn't already seen flashpoint in some other media. I thought what they did was about the best that they could do in terms of waving goodbye to the last 10 years of the DCEU, as well as at least leaving us with a Barry Allen story that can be heartfelt because everyone's got enough empathy to understand what it's like to care about a parent who isn't there anymore. This movie had a lot of problems; not just from its lead actor, but also MANY changes in upper management, a toxic fanbase, and a soft reboot that killed any excitement for it. Even though I really enjoyed the film as a farewell movie, one that's well acted and had some great sequences (in spite of some bad CG), I'm pretty much done with the DCEU and feel that Superman Legacy cannot come sooner. I just want this miserable universe to be over with.

"Spastic" is a word related to "spasmodic" and refers to apparent randomness in action, often swift and observably unco-ordinated. I think you nailed it... I can't comment with any authority on The Flash or the DCEU because they lost me completely with BVS. The CW Flash worked fine for me up to series 5 or 6 and that Flashpoint, complete with the Arrowverse crossover, made perfect (enough) sense. In comics, Flashpoint was a housekeeping opportunity for DC. On screen, it's pretty much pointless. There is nothing to reset. They could have just gone ahead and made more movies with DC characters without cameoing or referencing anyone they'd made films of before. They could have just gone ahead with Blue Beetle and The Green Lantern Corps. But they didn't. Instead they moved Ezra Miller's Flash to a new Universe and we'll probably never see him again, allowing James Gunne to go ahead and introduce a new actor. The other characters won't notice the change because in their Universe, the new DCEU (or DCU as it is nonsensically called now) whoever this New Guy (to us) is, he (or she) is the only Flash their Universe has ever known. Conversely, if Ezra's movie had been successful, they'd have made the Clooneyverse a reality instead. Now, why is DCU a nonsensical nomenclature? Because the DC Universe is where the comics live. When extended to films, it became the Detective Comics Extended Universe. Just moving to a different extension doesn't make it a new, or even the only, Universe. The comics are still and always will remain the original Universe. That's immutable. They oughta just keep calling the DC cinematic Universe the DCEU until they finally make a movie anyone could care less about watching because no one could care much less at all that you took the E out of your imaginary fantasy world(e). Or the DCCU and stop pretending they're not trying to be like Marvel.

Why dont they just do an exact live action retelling of the Flashpoint story? People asked that same question when they adapted The Last Of Us to TV. And now that show has a shit ton of Emmy nominations. So clearly the potential to improve the source material is there. But it rarely works out that way. Maybe it's hubris or maybe it's just cost-cutting measures, but Hollywood always tries to rewrite existing stories and make them worse. I think it's generally more fun for existing fans if they throw in a few curveballs along the way, rather than doing a panel-for-panel remake. But for the most part, they should follow what's already written.

The Flash finally came to streaming, so I was able to watch it, then watch your review. I watched the Flashpoint paradox movie, but didn't read the comics. I didn't really care about the state of the DC cinematic universe so the stakes for the movie really weren't there for me. My understanding is that the comics version of Flashpoint was used to reboot the universe, and get rid of everything that wasn't working, and introduce new versions of characters, but this movie came at the worst possible time. I think the original plan was to introduce Keaton Batman and this version of Supergirl into the DCU, but then restructuring came, and they changed the ending. Now it doesn't really work as a reboot since they didn't have time to really set up anything. I find Barry to be annoying and don't really like his humor. I think in the comics Barry is usually portrayed as more serious, and Wally West, his nephew, is more impulsive and less serious, but some adaptations make Barry more like Wally. It would have been great if Barry had always been more serious, and in this movie, the alternate version of him didn't take anything seriously and didn't feel a responsibility to others, showing how having his parents in his life changed him. I enjoyed the movie more than you did, but I wasn't expecting much. It was nice seeing Keaton as Batman again, but all in all, a live action Flashpoint Paradox would have been better. Thanks for the review!

Glad to see another review from you. I'm passing on this movie which is sad because I like flash as a character. Also, what is this fascination with making every movie 2.5 hours? a bit exhausting. Anyway, great review as always.

The Superhero films need more creatives that worked on the Watchmen series and Spiderverse for it to survive. I imagine Lord/Miller forever toasting that they got fired from Star Wars.

Great critique version of you took the words right out of my mouth almost feel like saying fuck you peter Gunn in this new DC universe. It’s it’s freaking me out I’m a DC guy. I am so ticked by what’s going on with their entertainment division, they fucking suck!! Glad you’re back

James Gunn you mean? I don't think he had anything to do with this movie creatively. He just has to back it as the head of the studio. I will say I have no idea why he hasn't used this movie as a great curtain call for the snyderverse. It boggles my mind

"meh" is the best you can get when the budgets are this high, nobody wants to take risk with that kind of money so they just make common denominator shlock. thankful for any exception to this, but there aren't that many
