New Caledonia is home to a creature subject to a peculiar evolution: the kagu has wings, but cannot fly. These wings, however, are an important part of its exuberant display when breeding season comes around.

Unimaginably vast, the Pacific Ocean is 99% water and only 1% land - you could fit the whole of the world's landmasses into it and still have enough room for another Africa! This landmark documentary series explores the sheer scale and majesty of the largest ocean on Earth, the isolation of its islands, the extraordinary journeys wildlife and humans have gone through to reach these specks of land, and what happened to both after their arrival.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

They're beautiful! I've never seen these birds before. I love how the male's feathers stand up on their heads. And when they run, it's so cute.🥰 I love this! I wish the video was longer.

Thank you for sharing more interesting information about the kagu! 🐦 Even though it can't fly, using its wings in courtship displays truly shows the creativity of its evolutionary process. This makes the kagu a unique and special species in the natural world. I look forward to hearing more fascinating stories about this species in the future!

Actually...as mentioned in this film....kagu´s are related to sun bitterns indeed and together they form the order of the eurypygiformes. This order is part of a larger taxon that contains birds like swifts, kolibri´s ,flamingo´s , grebs, tropic birds and pigeons : the metaves. Amazing...isn´t it?

Fun fact: Regarding overseas territories (with human populations). New Caledonia is the farthest distance from its 'home' country (France) of any overseas territory on earth, 16,000+ km. Farther than Britain to Pitcairn Island. USA to Guam, or even France to Rapa Iti.
