Kylian Mbappé hasn't just joined La Liga giants Real Madrid from PSG this summer, he has bought a football club.
Stade Malherbe Caen played in the UEFA Cup in the 1990s, were only relegated from Ligue 1 in 2019, and have come close to winning promotion from Ligue 2 over the last three seasons.

A more realistic immediate issue (and I say this as someone who likes Mbappe) is, for instance, AS Monaco or PSG facing Real Madrid in Champions League and having one of their important players injured in a Ligue 1 game against SM Caen just before the Real Madrid bout.

That's not a real problem, if something like that was uncovered the consequences to the club would be unspeakable. Not only the league but the fans would revolt and punish the club and the board. And something like this would be uncovered super easily.

I think a way more real and immediate issue is: if a young player explodes into the scene, coming from Caen's academy, how would Real deal with it? How would Mbappé's staff deal with it? Will Caen become a feeder club to any team Mbappé is at? Will Mbappé refuse to sell Caen's strikers to any club he's at? Many questions

In ice hockey’s NHL one of the players was an owner of a team. But his situation was different. He got cancer and retired. He became an owner of the team he played for so he could be part of the game. After he got better he made a comeback and played for the club he owned. So I think that having a stipulation that should Mbappe return back to ligue une he could only play for the team he owns would be a fair thing to stipulate to avoid conflict of interest. But his investment is smart, he’s thinking about life after he retires. The story of how lemiux got control of his former team is really interesting. Essentially, his team became bankrupt and he volunteered to defer his salary and eventually it got up to where he was the organizations biggest creditor. So, he said that if you give me the team I’ll forgive the debt.

I understand that some could think there's a conflict of interest if he was to play against Caen in any form of competition, but I wonder. Football players play against they boyhood clubs, the clubs they support, or against clubs they've played for, all the time. And we don't say it's a conflict of interest. Yes, it's a bit different, as in those cases it's an emotional interest in the other club, not a financial one, but frankly I don't think it's as much of a deal compared to RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg playing against one another, or AC Milan and Rennes, Man Utd and Nice, or Man City and Girona. Because in these examples (all of which have happened or could happen this year) the whole club is in conflict of interest, not just one player. But one thing we can say is that Kylian Mbappé really manages his career very well, he doesn't just go for the obvious thing like joining Real as a teenager, or just going for all sponsor deals for money. He earns enough obviously, but at the same time keeps a better image than a Cristiano for example.

OK #nerdalert here. There are two more cases you could mention. for the sake of completeness, of active footballers owning football clubs. Wilfried Zaha currently co-owns (with Stormzy and Danny Young) a club called AFC Croydon Athletic, a club which could *potentially* play an FA Cup game against a team Zaha may be playing for next season. Stranger things have happened. Add to that Gayà, the Valencia defender and captain (love him BTW) who owns his childhood team of Pedreguer CF which could potentially meet Valencia in a Copa del Rey match, though extremely unlikely as they are so down the football pyramid, though there is a technical way that it could happen should Pedreguer CF qualify to the Copa del Rey via their Copa del Mediterraneo "La Nostra Copa" qualifier. Which could be a video all in itself!
