15:35 Correction: the Tweede Divisie was still a professional league at that moment. The KNVB decided that there were too many professional sides and decided to pull the plug out of the Tweede Divisie and expand the Eerste Divisie. The teams were selected for promotion based on factors having to do with attendance. The teams that made the cut were promoted, the teams who didn't got kicked to the amateur level. Most of those teams never returned. Only AGOVV Apeldoorn (bankrupt in 2012) and RBC Roosendaal (bankrupt in 2009) did. The latter one might also be worth a story someday. They restarted in the 10th tier of Dutch football and are currently playing on a national level again, but lets not get distracted haha. Eindhoven just got lucky to get selected for promotion. Like I said. Most of the teams in the then last Tweede Divisie season either became amateur teams or just became bankrupt or pulled the plug. The Tweede Divisie was only re-introduced in the 2016-17 season, as the highest amateur tier in the country. These teams used to be split up by preferred matchday (yes, really). The whole amateur pyramid was (And still is in the lower tiers) split up by Saturday and Sunday football. This matter has been a hot debate for years now in the country for too many reasons to mention now. Anyway, the KNVB decided to let the no.1 get promoted and no. 20 of the Eerste Divisie get relegated. This has only happened one time, with the team you mentioned. Achilles '29. Achilles among other Dutch clubs panicked and made big financial risks. They got relegated anyway and totally collapsed after that. The few amateur sides that actually hesitated whether or not to get promoted now just basically refused it, following that s**t-show. So the KNVB reluctantly closed the pyramid again. These teams often function completely differently compared to the teams in the Eerste divisie. They only train a couple of days in the week, so players can do other work besides it. Plus their payout is usually better than what someone would make at smaller professional clubs like Eindhoven for example, plus a lot of it isn't in the books, so to speak. It is also a pubic secret that the level on the top-half Tweede Divisie is actually better than the bottom-half of the Eerste Divisie. These 'amateur'-sides are favorites when they meet the no. 14 of the Eerste Divisie in the cup, for example. It's just that they work differently. The squad level isn't the problem. It's everything around it. The steps between an amateur and pro side are so massive in NL that basically no team can afford to take them without a 75% chance to end up like Achilles '29 did. The KNVB did their best to make the Tweede Divisie (and Derde and Vierde Divisie a little bit) semi-professional to closen the gap, but it hasn't changed enough to make the move from Tweede to Eerste bearable. As an Indonesian, the only reason I'm aware of this club (FC Eindhoven) is because of Jay Idzes who plays for the Indonesian National Team. He was in FC Eindhoven youth teams and I think he made his first-team debut with FC Eindhoven. He also briefly played for Go Ahead Eagles Deventer and now in Serie A with Venezia, playing a crucial role in Venezia's promotion to Serie A and their currently ongoing Serie A campaign. You could argue that FC Eindhoven produced and nurtured a Serie A talent 😉

Wow, who'd have thought that FC Eindhoven would feature here! The impossibility to be relegated to the Tweede Divisie certainly added some boredom. I would argue that Telstar is a strong contender for "most boring club": no glorious history, in the Eerste Divisie since 1978 (so one year less than Eindhoven) and only reaching the promotion/relegation competition six times. But they did have Van Gaal as a player.

I must admit I am grateful that we have enough full-time proper clubs in England never to have go down the B club route. It just feels so artificial and as you say adds absolutely nothing to the league, as they can't get promoted or relegated and it only benefits the 4 big clubs even more in the top league against their smaller rivals.

Louis van Gaal played at Telstar in the Eredivisie (not in the Eerste Divisie), notably in the year of their relegation from eredivisie to eerste divisie (1978). Telstar had their finest hour in the final day of the 2009/2010 season, when they were virtually relagated to the amateur league between the 47th and 60th minute. Their opponent in that match (1-2) was ... FC Eindhoven! (FC Oss was relegated, after a 5-1 loss at MVV Maastricht)

From the 1974-75 season until the 2009-10 season, Rochdale AFC spent that entire period in the same division, which was initially called Division Three and later renamed League Two in 2004. They were in that bottom tier for 36 consecutive seasons before finally earning promotion to League One at the end of the 2009-10 season

I think an underrated reason that the EFL (esp the Championship) is so strong is that there aren't any reserve teams that clog up the fixtures and make the league as a whole look second rate, I'd imagine if a big six club had a reserve team in the EFL fans would boycott their games

Yeah, I agree. It's part of the reason why on FM, managing in the English league pyramid is pretty appealing, I don't like the system where reserve teams actually play in the same league as non-reserve teams, but it's basically present almost everywhere in Europe except for England

Another great fact about FC Eindhoven - they are the most recent team, as far back as 1954, to win the Dutch top flight without red on their kit. Willem II - who won it the following season wearing red, white and blue - are the last team to win it without wearing exclusively white and red shirts (as Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, Sparta, AZ and Twente, the six champions since 1955, all do).

That's not correct, DWS Amsterdam won the league in 1963/64 with blue, white and black. Also, DOS Utrecht won the league in 1958 and Rapid JC in 1956 (both yellow-black kits although I'm not completely sure). Rapid JC is now Roda JC, a fusion with Roda Sport and DOS has merged with Elinkwijk and Velox to FC Utrecht. DWS is now only active at amateur level.

I used to be a season ticket holder to FC Eindhoven in 2009. I choose them randomly as I wanted a Dutch club. I loved taking the 172 bus to Jan Louwers each home game. One of the weirdest experiences I experienced as an FCE fan was visiting Ado den haag away. I lived in the Hague at the time and I had to go to Eindhoven to take a combi to go to the game to then go back to Eindhoven. We also played psv once and it was great to be in the away end as an Eindhoven supporter. I now live in Scotland I do proudly wear my FCE sjaaal! If you get the chance to see them please do.

As someone that was born in Veldhoven (Eindhoven's neighbouring city) and lives in Eindhoven, my family mainly supports FC Eindhoven because it's walking distance from where we all live. Almost got myself and my best friend (and his little brother) a season ticket this season... I really appreciate seeing a video about this club, barely anyone knows about it and, as you can see, there's an actual story behind the "worst" of our hometown teams. Even that being the case, we're really proud to have 2 professional teams in our city.

I am impressed by your research on FC Eindhoven (although some pronounciations could need some improvements). I think making FC Eindhoven the best team in the city, would be a great challenge for Football Manager players! Edit: FC Eindhoven actually has a promising manager this season. I did that in FM20, made them a Dutch powerhouse and finished above PSV for a couple of seasons until my journeyman took me elsewhere. I nicknamed the reserve keeper, who became my main and is now the main keeper IRL Jort "Cyborg"mans, because his reflexes developed pretty well in that save and was an intergral part of my promotion year.

You pronouncing all our Dutch names is the most amusing thing about this video, ngl 🤣 I live in Eindhoven, so it's fun to see a video about one of our local teams. One small correction to your statements in the video though; it's currently entirely impossible to promote to the Eerste Divisie from the Tweede Divisie. Up to and including next season (2024-'25) the right of promotion has been suspended by the KNVB. They do aim to have a forced promotion/relegation system between the two divisions starting the season 2025-'26, though there's still much discussion about whether this will actually happen as there's only a few teams in both divisions who want this to happen.

Boavista's story is just a video waiting to be made, what a chaos club. And yet I was surprised to hear you mention us. From minnows, to being the only portuguese champions outside of the big 3 in decades. From playing Dortmund, Bayern, Inter, and even reaching an Uefa Cup semi-final, to playing 3rd divison football in less than 10 years. Just to come back, with no money whatsoever, survive for 5 seasons, only to be forced to sell the club to the infamous Gérard Lopez during the pandemic, who brought players like Javi Garcia, Rami, Alberth Elis, Reggie Cannon and Robert Bozenik. All of them with salaries that were completely out of our league and whose transfers he DIDN'T PAY. We now have a record number of OVER 30 FIFA transfer bans. We are currently playing with 17 year olds in our squad, because we haven't been able to sign new players for 2 AND A HALF SEASONS NOW. The under-19s have been relegated because every single kid who is even half decent is automaticaly shoved into the main squad. The reserve team got disbanded. Even the female squad, which used to be THE powerhouse in Portugal, only got saved from being relegated to the 3rd tier last season, because another team backed out of the competition. It's a slow and painful death for one of the biggest clubs in Portugal, the 4th biggest football club in terms of trophies. After Bordeaux's demise, we're the only club that Gérard López hasn't yet pushed into complete bankruptcy. We're the only ones left. Last season we only managed to save ourselves from being relegated on the very last matchday. We have even less of a squad this year, so it's unlikely that we manage to repeat the miracle. If we get relegated, it's over. The TV money and sponsorships of first tier football are the only things keeping us afloat, once we get relegated, it's light's out at Boavista. Not even the stadium is going to survive the coming downfall. So if y'all find yourselves in Porto, come to a Boavista match, we're basically doing our farewell tour.

It should be noted that there is (technically) a route for teams to get promoted. They'd have to inform the KNVB of their desire to be promoted mid-season then go on to win the Tweede Divisie. However, the KNVB froze promotions and relegations between the Ereste and Tweede Divisies for a mininum of 5 years in 2022.

I decided to follow Dutch football with Feyenoord. So, obviously, it's great to hear such story. As for the "period win", I kinda figured out what it is because there's the same thing in Argentina but for relegation. Very weird and a great way to prevent big teams from being relegated. Which didn't prevent teams like River Plate or Independiente to be relegated nonetheless.

They went 30-10-5 in their last 45 games (the best record over that period, finishing third in the league). Weird things can happen when a goaltender gets hot and carries a team. AAA baseball in North America (one step below MLB) used to have split seasons, first half and second half, and each half winner made the playoffs. Too many teams missed the playoffs by having the best record overall but not winning either half. Split seasons were eventually dropped.

Bro never heard that from the 1974-75 season until the 2009-10 season, Rochdale AFC spent that entire period in the same division, which was initially called Division Three and later renamed League Two in 2004. They were in that bottom tier for 36 consecutive seasons before finally earning promotion to League One at the end of the 2009-10 season
