The Forgotten Confederate Monuments of New Orleans

In 2017, the city of New Orleans controversially removed four of its Confederate monuments. But few at the time took note of the smaller and less prominent monuments on the neutral ground of Norman C. Francis Parkway in the Mid-City neighborhood. In this shameless cash-grab of a video, I present the histories of these lesser monuments and the men they commemorate - Colonel Charles Didier Dreux, Father Abram J. Ryan, and General Albert Pike.
This one gets surprisingly wild, y'all.

CORRECTION: The drainage and settlement of Mid-City began in the late 19th century, not the turn of the 20th. I recently found a map of New Orleans from 1878 showing a draining machine at the intersection of Bienville Avenue and Hagan Avenue (today's Norm C. Francis Parkway).

I think the width of the road there is also down to train tracks that previously ran down that avenue. Not "interurban" or "trolley" tracks, but an actual railroad. I have seen some reference to the New Orleans, Opelousas, and Great Western Railroad having a line out that way.

It's kind of interesting learning about how many conspiracies can be rooted back to claims from old print media. And it really starts to break down and become really stupid fast. It's amazing how well people today have been able to sugarcoat some really outrageous stuff to become palatable to a wider audience, while still using many of the same old ingredients.

I dunno man. When I was at school, I was taught that the best poets don't even use rhyme. But then what is the difference between a poet And someone Who just writes things on separate lines Like this? Besides, poetry is shit. It's like... songs but without the actual music. And the music is the good bit. I don't care about lyrics too much, I just want it to sound good. Poetry seems utterly pointless to me.

Father Ryan was a weak poet who spouted ridiculous nonsense about a failed treasonous uprising. For a great poet from the South, look up Sidney Lanier. Walt Whitman (a Yankee) is the great poet of the Civil War era (and before and after it). Also it's amusing how quickly that murderous White League crowd took to their heels when the Federal troops rolled into town.

As a Freemason, I can confirm that a lot of it is playing dress up and doing little plays. Just look at the uniform the York rite gets to wear. And the Shriners all wear bedazzled fezzes. It's a good time. In my experience, it's a social club with a slant towards community enrichment with a little mysticism thrown in to keep things interesting. Like the Elks Lodge, but more dramatic. Great video. Yep, depressing is the word alright. The references to P.G.T. Beauregard's statue being removed and his activities post civil war point up some of the complexities and paradoxes attending the removal of monuments to former Confederates. In Beauregard's case, you had a monument extolling his services to the CSA while ignoring his later advocacy of civil rights and political equality. Likewise the monument to the White League extolled violent white supremacists while obscuring the role played by former CSA General James Longstreet in defending the reconstruction government against these attacks. What all this points to is that the lost cause mythology was an attack on the historical memory of the South as well as that of the North. In particular, denying the reality of division in the South over Secession and Reconstruction and fabricating the narrative of a monolithic, united, "solid South" before, during and after the war. An exercise in historical falsification that might have served as a template for George Orwell had he been aware of it. The unequal struggle between the adherents of the lost cause and the so-called "scalawags" hasn't gotten the attention it deserves as far as I can see. Which is a shame since it points up that there were available alternatives to the way things eventually panned out post Reconstruction. I think you could make an exceptional video on this score.

Walter Reeves, thank you for your well thought out comments. It is important to note that a person can change for the better and disavow the thoughts and causes that they once supported. They should be remembered for that work, not their former work for the confederacy!

I also think it's kind of funny that someone wrote "DIE PIG!" on the bust of someone who's been dead since 1891. Nothing quite as flashy-trashy as: "JFK Jr is still alive and will appear in Dealey Plaza to announce, not only that Trump will be reinstated as President-for-life, but that he will replace the traitor Mike Pence to serve as his VP!" I do have to say that with Pike come a lot of issues that haunt the more real elements of Masonic history, particularly regarding the civil war. Little bit of an explanation. The Accepted Order of the Scottish Rite puts on plays to teach morality to its members. Think of it as a modern version of a medieval morality play. Each appendant body of Freemasonry does morality differently; the Scottish Rite puts on plays, the York Rite conducts overly complicated rituals, the Shriners get drunk and drive around in tiny cars (jk they actually do a lot of charity work and run a bunch of hospitals for kids).

24:14 Okay, I can answer this one personally- yeah, that's partially true. For more recent Masons, like myself, the mystery was very alluring- but back in the day (and for many other newer Masons) it's a family thing. Most Masons in my Lodge are Masons because their father/grandfather was. While the ceremonies and secrecy might be cool at first, the real reason people stick with Masonry is because they want to be surrounded by people with similar values who are trying to continually better each other. Plus the free drinks- can't knock the free drinks, man. Also, a lot of us love history and know how connected the birth of our nation is to the Order. Especially if you're in Lodges from New England (Specifically Mass) or Virginia.
@waitaminute2015

Thank you for that. My dad was a Mason in Mass. He pretty much said the same thing and I never had any reason to not believe him. Occasionally we'd bump into another Mason and they all seemed like good men who were loyal to each other in the aspect of always offering help. After my dad died, I met one who offered his legal services to me if needed. Now it's a huge conspiracy and it seems so ridiculous.

My grandfather was a Mason and a career Army officer. He always used to say the reason he liked the Masons was that, no matter where the Army transferred him, he could walk into the local lodge and immediately have pretty decent friends. That made more sense to me as an explanation than any of the conspiracy theories. Humans like having other humans to hang out with.
