What was meant to be a joyous trip home for the Christmas holidays turned to tragedy. A combination of bad weather and a frozen pipe were all it took to create a disaster right in Munich city center... Overshadowed by the 1958 Manchester United air crash, this is the story of Munich's other, forgotten air disaster......

Love seeing videos made of these lesser known disasters. Another such disaster that I hope will be covered one day is the 1961 Holtaheia Vickers Viking crash, which happened just outside of Stavanger in Norway. At the time it was the worst air disaster to happen in Norway. The plane was a charter flight carrying school children from a school in Croydon - which back then was a part of Surrey. Everybody onboard were killed in the crash. The school where the children and their teachers came from was Lanfranc high school. I learned all about the crash when I became a pupil of the school in 1976. In the school grounds a new cricket pavilion was built in memory of the pupils and teachers who died. My daily walk to and from school involved walking through the local cemetery where there was a large memorial garden where all of the boys and teachers were buried. Other than through the school, or through the local papers, i have never seen the disaster covered anywhere else. 34 pupils, two teachers and 3 air crew lost their lives that day.

I was eighteen years old and very conscious of the recent mid-air disaster in New York City as I passed through on my way to my duty assignment in Germany. A C-118 flew the group of us to Rhein-Mainz and buses took us on to the Eifel. I suppose the confusion of being in a foreign country and finding my way in my new assignment distracted me completely, because I have no memory of hearing about this disaster that occurred days after I arrived in Germany. I can only imaginer the horror of this tragedy for the citizens still recovering from the devastation of war. Years later, I discovered that the civilian version of the Convair in this disaster had a hidden flaw. The sump drain valves used for the daily drainage of water from the bottom of the fuel tanks were susceptible to being blocked by ice in cold weather. The mechanic attempting to drain the sump would find that no fluid came out when the valve was opened. He then faced the prospect of putting the airplane in a warm hangar, if one could be found, until the fuel warmed enough to melt the ice and allow it to drain. In the Munich case, he might have decided that the show must go on, and the minuscule amount of ice blocking the valve could cause no trouble. When I encountered blocked drains while maintaining civilian Convairs I developed the method of clearing the area and then removing the valve and quickly installing a new one while fuel ran over my bare arms, no matter the weather. But this was after the airplanes were converted to turboprop engines and jet fuel. The aviation gasoline in the Munich disaster was much too volatile to attempt this trick. And we will never know how much water was in its tanks.

I remember flying on one of the converted Convairs in NY State back in the late 1970's. I believe it was called the 580 after the conversion. Being used to jets, I found the prop noise somewhat annoying, especially when the pitch was set for takeoff and landing.

As a private transport for an American general and his staff, the plane was probably always fully fueled and on standby, so when he allowed its use for the students, that was the plane's fuel status. Fully fueled. It was probably seen as a plus, rather than a minus and in most cases it was. Even with half a fuel load, the results for the tram trolley would have been still the same.
@NK-qn6pq

As the plane was put to use for the Major General Ernest Moore, it was most likely fueled up to the limit on his personal instruction so that his office would foot the bill for the transport. He was at the time Commanding General for the US forces in Great Britain, and would certainly have commanded a plane for his personal disposal. If he was kind enough to lend his plane to a bunch of students that wanted to meet their parents in the Air Force for christmas, nobody would question his prerogative, and nobody would blame him for it either.
@secretagent5954
@secretagent5954 Жыл бұрын
theres absolutely no basis for that accusation. this was a military-used aircraft so “moores office” wouldnt foot the bill regardless. the MILITARY “foots the bill” which is why these students were even able to travel home in the first place. it sounds like you are blaming moore and/or the usa military for killing more german citizens than had the plane been fueled halfway while ignoring the glaring fact that if a plane carrying any amount of extra fuel that crashes into an intersection would most likely kill everyone in that intersection regardless. as im sure you know aviation fuel is extremely flammable and burns up quickly. stop being a salty “uninformed” n*zi

Perhaps the saddest part was that the everyday citizens of Germany had no idea what Hitler had in mind when they voted him into power. A largely unspoken about fact was that towards the end of the war, the conscripted German pilots were dumping their bombs into the English channel, preserving their own lives and those of UK citizens. It became part of the end of the madness by slowing Hitler's progress.

Strange, but maybe it's outside Munich or it's specifically in the UK that the "Manchester United Crash" is remembered. As someone who lived in Bavaria, including Munich, for decades and whose parents lived and were **in** Munich on the day of the crash, it always seemed like the Hackerberg Crash is the one that's remembered more. PS: it took 3 more decades, mostly thanks to Nimbys and endless lawsuits, that the new Munich airport safely away from the city was finally opened.

I lived in West Germany as both a Dependent and later as a G.I.. There were other long reaching effects of this event. It actually was a very major breach of Military protocol & security for this plane to have been used to transport these Dependents in this manner,and led to some very major changes in the use of these aircraft,and the transportation of Dependents to & from Univ. of Maryland's Munchen (Munich) Campus at McGraw Kaserne. (And at later Kasernes where the campus was after McGraw was closed in the '90s?) From then on,the only way they could fly if needed was Space-A on a Transport,or via Bus, Bundesbahn or POV. No more Charters unless it was for a sporting event,and even then these were Civilian charters.

Never heard of this one. We can speculate that it was kept under reported due to Cold War security concerns and not wanting to cause friction between the American military and German civilian authorities.

Yet another plane crash because people insist on flying in weather that is absolutely crappy.

Excellent retelling of a story that is really heartbreaking. All the American students were born during WWII - either like my father, after their dads had shipped overseas, or possibly to British mothers. And it was only 15 years since the end of WWIi in Europe, so all the adults except the Americans stationed there could still vividly remember the sounds of bombing, the city partially in ruins, relatives killed and the firebombing of Dresden. In some ways it's a miracle the Germans were able to cone to grips with the occupying forces of the Allies (not to mention Russia) and not become just as resentful as they did after WWI. The sanctions weren't at outrageous, but having a foreign attacker's airbases all around Munich constantly flying overhead with loud C-140s was enough of a nuisance (and triggering sound for many, I bet) without a deadly crash.

The Germans were actually quite welcoming of the Americans,especially in this era. It was then,and even to this present day at their insistence that the Americans aboard were/are honored. And this also pertains to several other Accidents,Disasters & Terrorist Bombings involving US Military personnel & their families thru the years.

A great video and a disaster that yes, I'd never heard of. As usual you give a detailed and respectful account, without sensationalism. Also, thanks for using actually photography of the time and not flooding your videos with that awful AI generated stuff, which I find tawdry and disrespectful.

3:47 The top of the spire of Pauluskirche, St Paul's Church, was 97 metres high. There must have been something very seriously wrong with BOTH engines if, after only 5 minutes??, after takeoff, the aircraft had ascended to only 320'. The fact that there was dense fog might have made the pilot reluctant to begin his descent into Riem Flughaven until he was sure that he had cleared the city centre. This also implies that he had flown over Munich at little more than 320' (!) In addition to the maximum fuel loading, there seems to be some other unanswered questions here. I flew into Riem in 1991, before the new airport opened a year later.

It's been thought that he'd actually 'lost' the one engine first due to icing,then either lost the other one as well due to either icing,or overspeeding/overstressing the second engine.

@@DrOlds7298 Lost the engine due to icing? You mean, there was water/ice in the fuel line? Surely the pilot would have started & warmed up both engines before takeoff, as is stipulated? According to the map, he flew north from Riem, then curved westwards, & south, to begin his descent eastwards into Riem, which of course, never happened. I still don't understand why the aircraft was so low over Munich city centre, unless, as you say, BOTH engines had failed/were failing. Despite (ironically) the maximum fuel load. I still feel that pilot error was at least partly responsible for this crash, as well as mechanical problems. Another point is, that it might have been possible to make an emergency landing at Oberschleissheim airdrome, just north of Munich. The plane probably flew over the airstrip in any case. Sad.
