At WrestleMania XX in Madison Square Garden, Triple H defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit. The match isn't brought up anymore on WWE television (for obvious reasons) and when the WWE talk about great matches in WrestleMania history, the triple threat match at WrestleMania 20 always gets left off the list. The match was excellent, it was the first time the WWF put a triple threat match in the main event of WrestleMania and it turned out way better than what was anticipated.
This video looks at the build-up to the match including Chris Benoit moving to Raw following the Royal Rumble in 2004, HBK's issues with Triple H around this time peiord, and we'll also look at the match in-depth to find out exactly why the WrestleMania XX main event match was so good.
00:00 - Intro
03:23 - Shawn's rivalry with Triple H continues on
05:51 - The Smackdown Six
08:42 - Chris Benoit returns to Raw
10:28 - Shawn Michaels wants the title shot
15:15 - Final Build-up
16:28 - The Triple Threat match at WrestleMania

The wwe basically took responsibility for his dimension, without openly saying it, by going pg. They know those chair shots and diving headbutts were the cause. They started serious drug testing (although part timers still use), and restricted many dangerous moves. Benoit deserves his spot in wwe history, gave up everything for the fans.

@Various Artists what do you mean by planned? Like planned during those dark days where he committed the acts? Or like planned for weeks/months before he did it? And with that in mind then, what do you make of the behaviour patterns he exhibited leading up to that weekend that point to paranoia and delusional behaviour? I certainly think he did it, primarily because the family accepts he did it. Fans are in some semblance of denial because based on the evidence presented to the public, we were given an extremely incomplete evidence batch as to how the police concluded it was a murder/suicide so quickly. Frankly it looks like a lot of sloppy police work was done in the case and even sloppier reporting. There absolutely HAD to be something present at the scene (likely his journal entries) for the police to reach that conclusion within 24-48hrs like they did.

Is it completely justified though..? I mean if CTE contributed to Benoit’s mental issues, I feel like that should at least be taken into consideration as an extenuating circumstance. I’m not saying we should “forgive” Benoit, just look at the situation a bit more dispassionately, and try to get the story as straight as we can. Labelling him “evil” and having done with it is the easy way out.

Since the brand split in 2002 only Brock in 03, Benoit in 04, Batista in 05, Orton in 09, Cena in 13 main evented WrestleMania after winning the Royal Rumble till the time there were 2 world titles. Then after the titles got split in 2016, Drew in 2020 & Edge in 2021 main evented Mania until the titles got unified again. That means only on 7 out of these 18 instances did the winner of the Rumble actually main evented WrestleMania.

Thank you for making this. Its good to see wrestling KZbin, specifically you, covering Benoit in the way that you do. If Benoit never did what he did, these big matches that he was a part of, like this one, would be talked about forever. The one thing I'll always think of, after seeing the DSOTR (Dark Side Of The Ring) episode on Benoit, and videos like this and the other Benoit videos you've done, or videos not specifically about Benoit but mentioning him (mostly the Reliving the War ones), is that I hope Benoit and Eddie Guerrero have found each other in the afterlife, back together like they always were when they were alive. And it also makes me wonder, if Eddie didn't pass away, would Benoit have gotten the help he needed thanks to Eddie? Personally, I think he would have, Eddie was his closest friend, and as the DSOTR episode talked about, Benoit knew something was wrong and was trying to get the help he needed, but without Eddie, it sadly didn't happen. Sure, Chris's health would probably deteriorate anyway, and he might still have passed away, but at least he and his family wouldn't have all died that fateful weekend.

When it comes to epic Wrestlemania main events, i can't think of any that delivered better than the triple threat world title match at Wrestlemania 20, you had so much history and storytelling going in from Chris Benoit's 18 year journey to the personal rivalry of Triple H vs Shawn Michaels. For me from a wrestling point of view, it was as good as anything you will ever see with all 3 wrestlers giving everything they had and it featured one of those rare moments where you saw the right person not only go over but truly deserved to win the big one. It was an emotional moment. The shot of Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero holding both world titles to close the show was one of the greatest endings in Wrestlemania history, i understand and respect why this match isn't talked about for obvious reasons but it still doesn't take anything away from the fact that this was a true wrestling classic.

This was during the absolute peak of my early wrestling fandom and I’ll never forget watching the match and the celebration afterwards live. I was only about 10 at the time but Eddie and Chris were my two top guys, despite being from the northeast my dad was a big southern rasslin fan and it’s because of him I learned to appreciate in ring work first and foremost as a young fan. Seeing the two top in ring guys in the two top spots at the biggest show in the business after one of if not the best match I had watched up to that point is a moment I’ll never forget.

This triple threat match felt like an answer from WWE to ROH when they had that iconic triple threat match on their first ever show, a match between Bryan Danielson, Christoper Daniels, and Low Ki. Funny how later on after this match, Christoper Daniels would put on TNA’s greatest match ever with a triple threat between Samoa Joe and AJ Styles.

As for what I thought of the match itself, it’s still one the best triple threat matches in the history of wrestling and definitely one of the best wrestlemania main events. WWE, understandably, can’t really mention this match and that’s a real shame but again I get it. You can’t seem like you’re glorifying a murderer. In terms of triple threat that I’ve personally seen in this business, the only ones that I can think of that come or should be mentioned in the same breath is the wrestlemania 30 main event, the unbreakable triple threat between AJ styles, Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe. And the often forgotten vengeance 2002 match between the rock, the undertaker and Kurt angle.

Haha I was actually bothered by Shawn’s inclusion, not Benoits. I felt that this was Chris Benoits moment, finally, after years of hard work. He won the Royal Rumble, coming in first and going all the way until the end. I felt that by including Shawn, they were showing that they didn’t trust Benoits ability to draw, or/and it was gonna be a way for Chris to win the title without pinning Triple H. I was also tired of Shawn vs Hunter.

As is so often the case, when a match like this is scheduled to happen, the participants usually practice it at untelevised events for weeks leading up to it. That happened with this match too. In February of that year I had stayed up late at my PC on ticketmaster and managed to get front row entrance ramp seats at an untelevised WWE show in Syracuse as a birthday present for a friend. When we got there, the main event was Triple H vs Benoit vs Shawn in a triple threat. I didn't know it at the time but it was about to be the Wrestlemania main event that year as well.
