The Formula 1 Iceberg. The first ever video on this is finally here. After months of people asking me to make one of these, i finally caved after seeing it float around twitter and end up in my DM's. Formula 1 is an incredible sport, with a huge history. Formula 1 has been around for so long that "things" are bound to happen. Such as controversy, mystery and conspiracy. What we see, is the tip of the iceberg. The rest is left up to us to explore and find out about, and hopefully this video does that to some degree. This will most likely be a 4 - 5 part video series where we explore the hidden, forgotten and mysterious sides of this great sport.
Please remember that this video was made for entertainment purposes only. What is said in this video is not my personal opinion and i only report on what is publicly available online for all to see. This is for a bit of fun, and just to start conversation and look back on what has happened in the past.
Please keep it respectful in the comment section, and be nice to each other. Enjoy.

Hey everyone! I know most iceberg videos are anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours long, but I much prefer doing a 4 - 5 part series. I have a lot of other videos planned especially for the off season, and I think parting out the iceberg series is a more sustainable and better way for me! A 1 hour 30 min video is probably a week and a half job and I have a lot of other stuff in the works right now that are also a big priority and I definitely don’t want to push it all aside. Hope that makes sense 🙂 🧊

I really think you should've added one of the most depressingly foreshadowing moments in F1 history. Maria de Villota's straight line testing crash for Marussia in 2012. Basically the team didn't receive the proper guidance on how to stop the car, so when she was trying to stop it she was caught out by the Anti-stall system, crashing into the tail-lift of the teams truck. She survived initially but ended up dying from complications in 2013. And I think you all know where I'm heading now... Just one year later at Suzuka, Jules Bianchi would loose his life driving for the same team, suffering from a similar type of crash (F1 car hitting a parked vehicle).

@@chriscollins550 I have a theory about that. IIRC the marshall station was displaying a green flag mistakenly, but with the thinking it was proper because the track was clear after that station. That station though was elevated due to the crest of a hill just before it, so it could be seen earlier. Bianchi maybe seeing that green flag continued thinking everything was clear. Once he crested the hill, he saw what was really going on, and trying to stop, or at least slow down, was caught out by the Anti-stall system. In other words, there were many small mistakes that added up to one large catastrophe.
@chriscollins550
@chriscollins550 2 жыл бұрын
@@DDS029 we will probably never know. If it was a FIA Marshall mistake they will never say. We will never get to see the inside view and we will never know what he was thinking. The only report we have is he ignored the yellow flags and that's the reason why f1 has vcr now. But how many times have the FTA put Blam on pilots only to find out year's later it wasn't their fault. Maybe death in f1 should be investigated by a outside team.
@Chris-xl6pd
@Chris-xl6pd 2 жыл бұрын
@@cbj4sc1 This comment explains a lot about the kind of people watching this channel. Literally no link at all between those crashes but it somehow makes it creepy. Jules Bianchi was a die hard racer and extremely gifted, when that safety car came out, he knew he had a lot of free track to capitalise on and make time gains to the position ahead. Whilst there is no requirement to drive slowly until you catch up to the safety car, it was totally on Jules to go through 130R with a Forklift truck on the gravel in conditions that were atrocious. Also the death of Maria being attributed to her injuries was the statement by her family, there is no official evidence thats what it was. I dont want to make theories about exactly what it was, but if you were trying to save face for overdose/suicide... thats what id tell the press.

I was surprise that the 2014 Mercedes engine is missing. The Story about it is that the Mercedes engine for 2014 already got tested in 2012 and that was the reason the Hamilton signed for them. Another rumour about that Engine is that the never ran the enigine at full power during the 2014 Season since it would expose the Grid so bad that the FIA and Bernie would revert back to the V8s. Also missing is the Grosjean Spa Podium 2015 where Mercedes gave him an Special Engine mode so hea could get that Podium

I’d say the Ferrari engine fiasco is more of a controversy than DAS. DAS was kept because Mercedes’ couldn’t just take it off for a season, that was the main reason. I’d also say the deepest part was the Spygate response, both Toyota and Renault had stolen Ferrari data, but only McLaren were penalised. It’s rumoured that Mosley’s response was “1 million for the offence, and 99 million because Ron Dennis is a c*nt”. Some say it’s very mysterious why only one team was punished and DQ’d, which was the only team to be fighting with Ferrari for a WCC. This also threads into possibly the deepest conspiracy that wasn’t on here which was the FIA’s historic dodgy dealings with Ferrari. Some believe Mosley and Ecclestone had a vested interest to see Ferrari succeed.
@recarsion
@recarsion 2 жыл бұрын
I'm usually skeptical of conspiracy theories but Bernie having an interest in Ferrari winning could actually be legit. People love Ferrari because... it's Ferrari. So if Ferrari wins, more people watch and Bernie profits. Just a thought.

I think Jackie Stewart actually talks about this on his episode of the beyond The Grid podcast I think he said that basically Moseley and Ecclestone started out to give the small English teams a chance but once the English teams got too good they had to rain them in and put Ferrari back on top. @@ramarkble101 DAS it self was legal with in the rules. The FIA can't just say something illegal at and have them remove the part. This was done to renault in middle of a session and unbalance the car killing Ratsberg. They can't band technology till end of a season. As no other team was going to design their own and with cost cap it was agreed to make it illegal for next season.

@nameless - Exactly. The Merc engineers found a way to modify the suspension geometry on the fly without breaking any rules. Classic loophole that was closed for the next season. This is what F1 engineers do best. You could argue that Ferrari found a similar loophole by breaking the seal on Filipe's gearbox. Ferrari deliberatly broke a rule to gain an advantage from the 'punishment'. I would call this a professional foul.

I think things move so fast in Formula 1, where something that happened in 2019 seems like SOOO long ago. Thinking back on something that’s 5 or 10 years old feels like 15-20 years ago. History from the 70’s and 80’s feels like a story on how your great grandmother met your great grandfather. Enzo Ferrari, the 60’s the 50’s, that’s like the dinosaur ages. Things feel older than they are the further back you go, not to mention the constant change of different drivers on the grid. There’s talk at every race, I can only imagine how big this iceberg is. But I’m sure someone out there who’s a big fan has the full iceberg but that’s insane.Just close your eyes and point one out: pick a year, pick a team or a race, I’m sure you’ll discover very interesting history because this sport has so many layers. Like onions, or Shrek.

Other controversy moment people never talks about was Fernando Alonso's crash during pre-season testing on Barcelona in 2015. Apparently he got electro-shocked after the crash on turn 3 and went to be in comma for a time. Reports say when he woke up on the hospital he had amnesia and only talked on Italian. But the truth version hasn't still seen the light, as every time someone asked Mclaren or Alonso about this both team and driver re-directed the attention to other questions.

I can understand the DAS situation. In a local racing series, it happened to a team I worked with. We didn't break any rules either, but it was something no one else thought of. In essence, there was no specific rule covering it. But even we knew it was not really within the spirit of the rules. So it was made widely known that there will be a rule covering it for the next season. It was also in comparison, a slight advantage, and no one else invested time, energy, and resources to do it for what was left of that season. We had our little moment in the sun of putting something over on everyone, and that was that.

Im not sure i completely understand your comment, but there is a regulation which adresses the DAS. I believe techinal regulation article 10.4.1 stated no steering system is allowed to alter the alignment of more than 2 wheels (it roughly says that). Merc only adjusted 2 so it was completely legal and in the spirit of the rules. The big reason behind the ban is the expense of it, plus other teams rushing to do it and it not working becoming unsafe.

I feel like one thing could fit up there perfectly 2020 Sakhir GP with a Mercedes theory where they purposefully didn’t want Russell to win so to keep Hamiltons face and to make it not seem like the car is everything. „We have a GENUINE tyre puncture“

Yeah that race was very sus. Why would you say 'genuine' as well, if you didn't think someone thought you were lying

Very suspicious indeed. Lewis was at his highest point with his 7th title. Having his substitute from a backmarker team win a race will surely raise eyebrows.

People who see that are new to f1 will realise that events like these happen and always will the sport aint always fair but its not always just 1 team or driver that makes contreversy and its a vicious cycle the arguement now will settle soon just like all those that happened in the past

F1 in itself has not been complient with regards to giving fans refunds. At the 2005 US Grand Prix, fans could only watch as 14 cars on Michelin tyres pulled out of the race due to safety concerns about the tyres not being able to stand the loads of the then newly diamond ground tarmac at turn 13 for more than 10-15 laps, let alone the mandated duration of single lap qualifying and the entire race (73 laps). As the 6 Bridgestone shod cars left the grid to start the race, fans were either booing or leaving en-mass to demand they get refunds. F1, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the FIA refused point blank to give one stating that a race took place. However, it was Michelin that stepped up to the plate as a good will gesture, by offering refunds or offering free admission to the 2006 US Grand Prix to anyone who had a ticket from the 2005 US Grand Prix. It's partially because of this that I take a softer tone towards Michelin than I do for the FIA in particular for the handling of that most disastrous PR own goal the sport has walked into
