Perfect timing! I have 5 great flourescent sarcophytons, in different colors, and a long waiting list of people who want frags, but I've been hesitant of cutting them. This will boost my confidence! Thanks! Quick question: in a former frag file, you placed acropora frags vertically to increase axial corallites. Are all acropora suitable for that? I want to do it with my spathulata and tenuis that are only encrusting. :)

Loved watching this. I do have a question. If your coral is already glued in the tank and it needs a trim. When you trim it do you need to do anything to the coral as in iodine after you trimmed. Keeping in mind that this is the glued coral on the rock that you have taken the cutting off. The cuttings can be dipped but what about what it was taken off the mother colony is fixed to your rock? Do you have to do anything to the mother colony now that the tissue has been cut?

Michelle Conabere 4:38 helps Thanks for the great question. Mainly important to add fresh ads or any media ie carbon. You can’t Do much more to benefit the coral other than iodide , check pH is high and maybe an amino acid And vitamin dose ;)

Love these videos. But I flinched every time you fixed your glasses. Should we be worried about the toxins from these corals on our hands?
@GalleryAquaticaTV
@GalleryAquaticaTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. That’s a great question. My understanding of the allelochemicals within these kinds of soft corals is that they are specifically used in coral warfare and predator deterrence, but are not highly toxic to humans. This is unlike Paltoxin which has been proven to be aerosolised. I’d love it if my glasses would stop slipping so much. ☺️ Ania

I’ve got a question - had a beautiful and happy Sinularia that was attacked at the base of the “stem” by a large cowrie I did not realise wasn’t reef safe. The cowrie had scraped away a layer of the stem flesh near the bottom, and the coral reacted by flopping over and looking very sad and deflated. I figured it was a good opportunity to cut the Sinularia down a bit, so I got some sharp scissors and cut above the part of the stem that had the damage, leaving about half of the stem left with the attached “fingers” remaining untouched. Are the odds good that this will work? Because a lot of the fragging videos I’ve seen are of people fragging the “fingers” off as opposed to just shortening the stem.

Hi , I do think you’ve got a great chance of recovery there. I would suggest to dose daily Aminos and regular iodide to assist with healing , growth and recovery. Also at the initial stage I would have suggested dipping in an iodine based dip to oxidise and remove any rot and reduce risk of infection. Keep me posted! Ania
@bigbowlowrong4694

It worked - kinda. The initial large cut I did didn’t end up working - the toothpick kept sliding out of the base of the frag (no matter how loosely I tied it down) so it would float off the rock I had rubber banded it to. After a few attempts at re-mounting it via the toothpick method I figured I’d cut it down more and ended up with a much smaller (but still relatively substantial) frag, which I put in a little shot glass which was half full of rubble and shells. I didn’t rubber band it or glue it down, just left the white base of the frag sitting on top of the rock in the glass. The glass prevented the frag itself from being affected by flow too much - it stayed in on its own. Within two weeks it had successfully attached to the rock and some of the shells in the glass, so then I took it out of the glass and it’s getting back to normal!

Couple questions for you guys, you touched on multiple methods here, do you find the slightly less intrusive method of attaching the frags on the tile and the rocks (not piercing them with the toothpick) allows for a better frag success rate/quicker recovery period? Do you tend to lose very many leather frags regardless of method? I know with other species like say Zoas for example its not uncommon to just have some frags that never really take and melt away, do you experience that very often with leathers or are they generally so bulletproof they tend to almost always recover provided they get that Iodine dip and have a good supply of Iodide to pull from the water column? Thanks so much! I've got a Green Nepthea colony I need to chop up soon and this video has boosted my confidence on the process substantially! Love from Canada

Great vid btw Can i use Lugol's aswell?
@GalleryAquaticaTV
@GalleryAquaticaTV 4 жыл бұрын
Anton P Thank you. I believe Lugol’s to be a more concentrated option for Dosing Iodine, but more caution must be used because it is not just the non-toxic form of Iodine (Iodide) such as the Seachem - this safer- which is why I favour it. Ania
