"So she's not leading in the poles. But, remember, neither was Donald Trump in 2016." Unlike the US, France has a crazy system where they count up the number of votes for each candidate, and the one who has more votes gets to be President.

There's something else that helped Le pen to rebrand herself and it's Zemmour, that man is soo extreme and the farthest right politician than Le pen looks now moderated compared to him. As far as the French media and population is concerned, this debate was not considered intense. Five years ago, the debate between the two politicians was filled with personal attacks, they never let each other finish a sentence and especially Marine le Pen was widely criticized because she was considered aggressive. This time though, even the two candidates have admitted during the debate that they were both more calm and that they "grew up". It is also not true that Marine le pen still wants to leave the European Union (she wanted to in the last two elections) but her program is very euro-sceptic and she constantly affirm that she wants to give the french people more power by changing the EU. As a french citizen, I think that this election illustrate very well the division of our people. On one hand we have the voters of Emmanuel Macron who are in general wealthy and wants to see a strong and united Europe to strengthen their influence against the United States, Russia and China. On the other hand we have the voters of Marine le Pen who are exhausted of the social crisis my country is going through and are generally afraid and in certain cases even hate the massive immigration in France. Finally there are also the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon who had only 1.2% less votes then Marine le pen and is considered far left. His voters are generally looking for more social justice in the country by taxing way more the rich, take more the climate change into consideration and are also EU-sceptic. The decision of his voters is very likely to determine who will be our next president. I believe in a certain extend in the program of Macron and more importantly not in the program of Le Pen and hope that he will be elected. I didn't mention a lot of elements but these are the big lines, I hope you understood everything :)

@@gemelwalters2942 I also don't believe for a second that a politician like Le Pen genuinely changed her stance on leaving the EU. She seems to operate like US politicians so my guess would be that she would contribute to rotting the EU from the inside to persuade more and more people it's a bad idea and then she'll have the traction she needs to accomplish leaving the EU. See it ALL the time in the US. "This program is a waste and inefficient, vote for me and I'll prove it" *cuts budgets, fire experienced staff and experts, replace with business leeches, stall proceedings, pass bills to add pressure* "see I proved it was inefficient by making the situation worse, vote for me again and my policies."
@hannahsmart4494
@hannahsmart4494 2 жыл бұрын
She does still want to leave the EU, she just knows that it's not the best idea to mention it now that the consequences of Brexit are becoming clearer and the French electorate aren't necessarily going to be as easy to sway on the issue than before. What she wants hasn't changed, what she's saying and how she's acting has, purely to try win the election, like any politician. And for those who will vote Macron this coming weekend, they're not all going to be the wealthy or even the fairly well off, it'll also be everyone who does not want to see LePen in power, just like how he won the second round last time. The more wealthy tend to favour the banker, sure, but when the opposition is LePen you're going to have more than the well off who will vote for him. As for Melenchon voters, many might abstain altogether, or vote Macron to keep LePen out. I don't know how many are keen on LePen, even if some of their ideals are similar, the others might be hard to swallow. We'll have to find out this weekend. Quite honestly I'm a little scared, I am British by nationality, but France has been my home since I was a child. Don't want to go through Brexit twice XD

With more than 50 % of voters that did vote in the first round for a candidate that does want to leave : the extreme right being financed by the russians and wanting to ally with them (even if they don't admit it) and the left wanting to get back to a non-aligned position in the coming back of cold war between USA and China... US came very close to lose one of their main military allies in the world and most of their citizen don't even know it. And Macron wasn't exactly impressive in that debate. I agree she's a bigoted idiot but there's a reason so many of the French don't like him. Sure it's sad that a certain percent agree with her, but France isn't about to swing far right.

Le Pen has indeed spent the last 5 years making her image and her program more palatable, but at bottom she remains the same Islamophobic, xenophobic extreme-right nationalist. @@mikegreystoke8379 The EU has faults, as does every single organisation on the planet. It's bureaucratic, slow, complicated, political, but still, I prefer the idea of Europe in this ever more globalised and interconnected world than being alone. More places in the world are forming trading blocs than aren't, countries are far better off working together with their neighbours than not. Besides, unlike what seems to be most people, I can actually understand that the EU helps more than it actually harms at the end of the day. Guaranteeing a certain level of standards aside (worker's rights, food, health and safety standards, etc.) the EU does have a rather important global influence. GDPR, making websites actually ask before planting cookies and trackers on your devices, at least trying to protect your online data, more than can be said for many other places. Also having enough sway to basically enforce all phones/tablets/etc are charged all with USB-C cables in the future, reducing the environmental impact of needing several chargers for several devices. Two more notable things the EU has helped do recently. The Russia issue is complicated, frankly I'm also annoyed and disappointed that they haven't done more sooner to cut off Russian oil and gas, though individual member states are starting to finally. But I can also understand the want to avoid directly causing an energy crisis practically across the continent just to continue an economic war against Russia which is already escalating enough as it is. Nobody wants world war three. And that very well might happen anyway, especially if it escalates worse.

@@dominiqueridoux2073 When Trump ran for election, the media predicted the apocalypse. And what happened in the end? Not a thing. Nothing that hadn't happened before. The Trump administration did not cause the economic debacle, women were not forced to be housewives and wear hijabs, homosexuals were not persecuted, segregationist laws for blacks did not return, nothing happened that would not have happened with Obama or any other former president. Well, something happened, far fewer bombs were dropped in the Middle East than under Obama and fewer immigrants were deported than under Obama. Could it be that the media lie to us, want to confront us and want to keep us in an eternal state of tension and anxiety?

This debate betwen Macron & Le Pen actually was one that got the less view in all the history of political debates broadcasted on French television, just to get an idea how people didn't care. Neither was it tense, Macron is so sure of himself he didn't even make a proper campaign, his strategy rellying solely (exactly as it was five years ago) on the fear of Le Pen, a dangerous strategy; while Le Pen try to appear like a friendly face able to oppose Macron. We, in France are in a really deep mess, because Macron isn't a friendly face either. Sure, he is far less a threat to everyone, but is still verry damaging, people are legitimately tired and scared of him and this is one of the reasons Le Pen gained so much votes. Macron also has ties and sympathies to the far right, wich kinda blur the differences between him and Le Pen in the public eye. To summerise, French people are discouraged by this two clowns because it feels either of them in power would deeply damage the country and the economy, people don't want to vote for them, and are confused regarding wich would be less damaging.
