Did you know? Many résistants were disgusted by the mass influx of new members in the last days of the struggle, nicknaming them the FFS (Forces Françaises de Septembre-French Forces of September) or the ‘Septemberists’, as all these people had tried to get glory in September 1944 when it was safe. De Gaulle tried to keep SOE agents out of Paris, in an attempt to rewrite history, he wanted the French resistance to be seen as an effective united movement or an "nation in arms" from 1940 to 1944 that didn't have any British or American assistance.

The German resistance was highly disorganized. The organization was similar to the initial issues that the French resistance encountered. Some wanted to make territorial changes such as letting Danzig (Poland) part of Germany, some wanted Hitler dead, some even wanted a return to old school pre-Weimar Republic government. Messed up. But the resistance existed in many ways - White Rose with the nonviolent ways formed by university students, prominent for Sophie Scholl, the other was within the military circles. The military circle of resistance was the most interesting of all. As early as before 1939 the Abwehr, the intelligence division had many conspirators. Resistance was fueled by some high ranking German officials when they witnessed the aftermath of the invasion of Poland, witnesses of atrocities. By 1942 it was getting stronger. Some figures included Hans Oster, Henning von Tresckow, Friedrich Olbricht, and other key military figures in Berlin. They planned to kill Hitler using a liquor bomb and place it in a plane to make it look like it was attacked by Soviet fighters. Also before that they even planned to kill Hitler via a suicide mission while in a uniform presentation. By 1944 the target Hitler is becoming more isolated. We all know what happened from here on out.

Few words about Jean Moulin would have been great : he was the symbol of the French resistance. Following the orders of Charles de Gaule, he was blind parachuted in the alps in 1942, with the mission to unificate the main resistance groups. He reached his objective, but was captured by the Gestapo in 1943. He died, presumably under torture, without throwing a single word.

Dogemacht42 Legit. I see the French resistance take the crown of being the most influential resistance back in WW2. They did do some, but different groups didn't work together if barely at all. The Polish is where it's at. But I do give the French credit where credit is due.

Jonathan Williams yeah. They were all captured and killed unfortunately, the last of them died in 1963 or 1962 I think.
@redacted35577 жыл бұрын
RadiationReactor I do agree, that the French were not wusses at this, but the poles had a much better and more organized resistance, plus they almost took Warsaw by themselves in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Unfortunately they lost the battle due to the lack of Soviet and therefore allies support.

Many people like to think that France was weak for surrendering, but at least this shows how strong the Resistance to fight the Axis powers were. It shows the tenacity of one nation when pushed into a corner and deciding to bite back against those who tried to keep a tight grip on their way of life. I know in Marvel Comics that Captain America in the main comics has a lot of respect for the people in the French Resistance because of how they fought even if the odds were against them.

My grandfather (that I was named after) fought in Verdun, France against the Nazis. We got to visit the battlefield when we lived in France. He suffered the effects from exposure to mustard gas for many years after the war, when he returned home to Florida. As a kid living in Sedan, France 🇫🇷 I always found it upsetting to hear the young French people making fun of the US and it’s people. But we noticed that when we travelled to the South of France, the people loved Americans and we were invited to share meals with several families. They often told us that they remembered the GIs coming into their villages, kicking out the Germans, and giving the people free chocolate, cigarettes and soap 🧼. Que Dieu benis les Francais et je prie que un jour ils vont tourner leurs coeurs vers Lui. Que le Seigneur benis la France et son peuple!

My great grandpa lived in the Spanish French border and volunteer for the French resistance during world war 2, he fought for 3 years, until being wounded in action. After the war he went back to Spain during Franco's dictatorship. After that he migrated to Mexico with my grandpa as young man. My dad was born in Mexico and I am now a proud Mexican, but history matters. That's why to this day I have love to eat snails, which freaks most people I know. XD

Indeed the Spanish had to suffer a fascist attack 3 years before the rest of Europe. Spain provided a training ground to Hitler and Mussolini, helping Franco. What a mistake from France and other nations not to have helped the Spanish Republicans. Only the International Brigades helped, with famous names as Ernest Hemingway, André Malraux or Georges Orwell. But from 1940 Spanish Republicans then fought with the Free Forces of France, and in particular were the first troops to enter Paris in 1944.
