My headcanon for why touchy feely Kai and Cole are with each other is because they’re both touch starved. Nya doesn’t seem huge on affection like Kai is, and Cole lost his mother when he was young.

I have loved seeing Lava evolve over the years both in the show and the fandom; And if I went back in time to tell myself in the beginning of Ninjago's release that this is something (along with many other things) to look for, I would've never believed myself. Although I believe canonizing them would give a lot of potential for story writing personally (and also share rich, complex kinds of relationships with viewers in a new way), I don't particularly mind it's implicitly either... When I view Lava on the screen, I feel like it's a small secret story special for me; I've had issues with my queerness growing up, and on top of that since I am a biological woman I was criticized for having a lot of male friends specifically, (even when I had explicitly stated I never saw them as more than friends; both because I just didn't and also because I was queer). Skylor and Kai, to me, are great friends. She is someone he feels comfortable around as seen plenty in the show, and although it's been essentially said that he likes her almost more than as a friend she can still decline him and has shown to in some way to decline him (or at least set some rules). It shows she can choose and is not obligated to get in a relationship with him despite the narrative's buildup towards it (and because of her gender). In the case of Vania and Cole, I like how it is almost opposite in that Cole can choose, and in some ways has chosen to reject romance between them. I've always enjoyed male and female friend relationships in shows, and the way I personally viewed Kailor and Conia as just two sets of really good friends was and still is very much a change in perspective I needed. Sometimes I feel it's healthy to have one-sided relationships in shows, or showcase healthy rejection as well. Lava is very cool to me because I feel it expresses the nice side of rejection in that it means you have opportunities to find someone else (that actually may or may not be better fit for you). Keeping Kailor, Conia, and Lava all up to interpretation is nice because I get to choose the narrative that applies best to my viewing of the story, and for me it is normalizing friendships between folks of different genders and also showing a healthy existence of romantic relationships between folks of the same gender (both things I needed to see as a youth that I wish I had gotten sooner). These characters can have a complexity just like we can, and Lava has a lot of buildup and chemistry I feel can make for a very healthy queer relationship. It has made me think a lot more about my queerness personally, and the ship is dear to my heart. I like how their relationship grows and is paced, and it can be interpreted in multiple ways at different stages in the show. You can see them as dating, as just pining for each other, or even as friends if you so wanted. I think the complexity of both Kai and Cole's attractions are special, and I like how the implicit narrative has painted that they both have a unique sexuality. I hope the show either canonizes Lava (personally), or keeps everything implicit so I can keep analyzing the show as I am right now. Although in the end it doesn't matter which ships become canon (as I can still have my own opinion), it's still nice to be able to see visually a possibility for Lava without some outside interference. Also, I feel like it causes less drama to leave the relationships up to interpretation as then folks from all sides can technically say there's is canon in some specific way (and they wouldn't be wrong or right). This is a long ramble, apologies; Great video! Anyways, at the end of the day Lava is nice because it normalizes complex relationships and showcases ones not commonly showcased much in media (specifically media for youth). I connect with it a lot because of my queerness and also because of the negative gender stereotypes I have faced growing up; Lava provides great representation... Edit: I haven't actually finished Dragon's Rising. Cole and Geo is interesting, but I still feel Lava has a much bigger impact than them personally. 🤔

As a multishiper, it's completely ok to have a favorite ship (aka an OTP) and like other ships involving the same characters! I love lava, but I also like Kailor and Lostshiping (that's the name of Cole x Geo's ship), and all your friends have every right to like their ships and not see the ship as their favorite and especially not to care with shipping. It's important to know that as much as a ship is morally ok and legal, it's ok to ship characters, and it's ok to respect other people's opinions, even if they're something you don't agree with. respect and understanding is important! and Lava and Lostshipings are my favorite ships with Cole!

Its especially interesting on how Kailor has less of an appeal to me than Lava because it's just a weird relationship overall. I don't blame people for shipping Kailor, but in canon, it has little interaction and is kind of distant. I like Lava better because it has more interaction (and healthy ones, too) compared to Kailor. Dare I go on the stretch that Kailor is a bad example of how relationships work in most of the show, showing audiences that its fine if they end up together in the end. The show definitely likes experimenting with lava, they definitely do some things intentionally, but you have to look for them because they aren’t really willing to make such a huge dramatic commitment. I just finished watching dragons rising 2 about an hour ago and I got this idea I just had to share So since Kai and Cole haven't seen each other since the merge it's probably gonna happen in the next season. What if when they see each other again after all those years they run to each other and then kiss. The other ninjas will be confused and ask something like: ehhh what's going on? one of my favourite things about animated stuff is that every single thing is a conscious decision, every facial expression, every movement, every time a character stands just that little bit too close… and i think that’s really interesting when you think about things like lava because all these things we can notice aren’t just actors doing something out of line with the story, but someone out there thought “yeah when cole mentions varnia, let’s make kai look like someone just insulted his entire bloodline”. it’s so fun to think about, even if you aren’t a big shipper just think about it in the context of all character behaviours it’s soooooooo cool. idk maybe i’m the weird one but i’ve not been able to understand cole x geo at ALL because like… geo’s a munce-geckle?? call me crazy but i don’t like it at all. before i get attacked i like them as friends/a parental unit for the lost kids but no way are they actually lovers wtf 😭 anyways i love lava, friends or otherwise 🫶

1:33:16 I just wanted to point out that, Cole was kicking the tree for food right? Then the coconut fell onto Kai’s sword while Kai was cutting out the bushes. Kai immediately knew who was responsible for the coconut and went over to Cole. This scene made me so happy when I thought it like this. I liked how Kai knew Cole was the one who made the coconut fall and immediately gave it to him. Like ahhh! Though of course this is my thought to this scene and my writing is not that great, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on the scene. :3 Edit: Also Geoshipping is so adorable. Colors like pink, reds, and purples, setting mood. Camera pans and emphasizes how close the characters are, and how they make each other feel. A tone of love and romance. Voltron, TLAB, LOK, Tangle, and more have done same scenes for romance. Ofc I’m not saying it must be but it CAN be. I don’t really get platonic vibes from that scene but something more. Like mention, this reminds me of Klance from Voltron. They had two boy pairing (blue and red paladins) comfort each other, the lighting and tone are same as this, and they’re close and intimate with each other to the point the Red Paladin is truly affected by the Blue Paladin “forgetting”. Fast forward, the blue paladin did the same for Pink Paladin but that scene considered romantic. So if this is romantic, so is Klance moment. Back to Lava, I get the same feeling from Klance scene. These two have great chemistry that has the potential of being more than friends. The fact Kai affects Cole more and Cole is a big support for Kai shows the strong bond that they have. I’m very happy to have found this ship and now I’m obsessed. Thanks for the video, Cube.

Safe Haven: there’s a parallel between Jaya and Pixane too! Jay recused Nya from being crush and protects her from enemies approaching them. Pixal recuses Zane who’s also crushed. Then you have fucking lava where Kai recuses Cole and protects him from enemies until Skylar saves them. So you see! Like you said, the couples are paralleling each other. It’s so sweet and I’m happy we got that moment! 🖤❤️

I have just started Lavashipping in January as I got hyperfixated back on Ninjago. And after watching the new season of the first part to Dragon’s rising, I was hoping for at least some character interaction between them. I hope in the next part of dragon’s rising he helps the ninja try to figure out how to rescue Bonzle and Kai from the nether-space. Even if the ship won’t be canon, and as much as I want Lava to be canon, I don’t think it should be because in the show itself I just think Cole’s a person that doesn’t need to be in a relationship. Probably because I think he’d be that one friend that loves food more than anything. Either way, wherever this story takes us, I’m sure it will be enjoyable to watch. But I will say despite all the teasing with their interactions, it’s what helps get me going, even if I have to write my own fanfics as food with the lack of lava moments in the newer seasons, minus the shorts. Now I’m starting to see why they had Kai and Cole in the shorts since they hardly and rarely talked to each other.

But there is that one Plasma scene That lives in my brain free (when Kai was showing he should propose to Nya). I find a really cute. But on the sidenote completely unrelated to Ninjago shipping there’s just one South Park ship that I am a part of that shipping community(most South Park ships happen to be gay). Our ship is constantly talk down upon even though we don’t do anything to the other shippers so it’s really unfair. We tell the toxic shippers who don’t ship what we ship and are only there to top down on us, to leave us alone, but they just won’t. So thank you for bringing attention to the toxic people in any shipping community(I am not saying that my shipping community doesn’t have any toxic traits/people).
