trolley BRT is an idea that I love, it just makes so much sense.

Yeah many cities around the world already have trolleybus BRT, such as Mexico City and Shanghai, and they've proven to be successful.

trolleybuses are so cool, I remember seeing one for the first time here in Philadelphia and not really understanding why it was connected to wires until much later. Setting Trolleybuses up along BRT corridors is really smart. Honestly the way Dayton's bus corridors are already laid out in simple, straight, or U-shaped routes, makes them perfect for upgrades to Trolley BRT. Next would really just be upgrade station-stops and improving frequency. Wouldn't even need to train the operators up (although more would probably need to be hired)

Yeah! Sadly every system is struggling to hire enough operators right now.

I grew up in Dayton and always loved seeing the electric trolleys. I rode on one of the old ones years ago. Loved how quiet it was.

it’s cool that your videos focus on a part of the country that’s really overlooked! like, i find that ppl either focus on the “really good” or the “cartoonishly bad” parts of usamerica/canada

Dayton has several other trolleycoach routes than the 4 you named. Story is these other routes run just one trolleycoach and other trips are covered by bus. The Dayton RTA fleet includes at last report 35 of the 54 trolleycoaches they bought in the late 90s and 4 prototypes with plans to order 41 production trolleycoaches based on the prototypes.

The reason Dayton got a jump on other cities installing trolley buses in the 1930s was a huge fire in the car barn of the street railway company destroyed much of the street car rolling stock. Trolley buses were the new technology , new tracks not needed for future route changes - so they invested in the buses.

Great video! I swung by Dayton last summer (after the USAF museum) but didn't get a chance to see these. Interesting part about trolleybuses being a transitional technology towards future BRT/light rail - are there other cities considering this path? I'd imagine that it'd be more benefit-cost friendly to either stick with regular low-investment buses or just build a full LRT system

I did back in the 1960s and the early 1970s in Chicago. Sadly in 1973 the CTA transit system got rid of these buses. They were build in the early 1950s. They was a little noisy and hot in the summer but they were fun to ride.

so cool that dayton kept some trolleys , youngstown used to have an extensive electric trolly system but i guess we can’t have nice things :(

Trolleybuses were a downgrade from trams but they were able to re-use some tram infrastructure, which probably made the original installation cost worthwhile. Building a new Trolleybus line now would mean building new infrastructure from scratch, which would mean it has to compete on cost benefit with other transport modes (eg LRT, battery electric buses, even standard diesel buses). So really it only gets built unless it is clearly the most superior mode option, which is only in rare cases. Still I’d love to see more lines built
@HeartlandUrbanist
@HeartlandUrbanist 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I agree that it probably only makes sense in very specific conditions. But as cities move away from diesel and towards electric, they’ll have to build infrastructure either way (for charging). So maybe that makes trolley buses more competitive. And as I said in the video, BRT routes already require infrastructure on the street, so again, maybe that makes it an easier choice.

Great work, Matt. Keep it up. It's tedious, lengthy work here in LA to create a more transit friendly city, and we could use messages like this. We do have some electric buses in LA, which seem great, though I haven't had a chance to ride on them yet. They only seem to cover certain areas and aren't city wide.

I know that in some cities, agencies prioritize running electric buses in low income communities because of the disproportionate pollution and health effects in those communities. Maybe that’s the explanation?

Not Dayton's trolleybus but I've ridden trackless trolleys in San Francisco and (not sure) Boston. They are so much quieter than those horrible diesel busses.

Uber is the reason why all transit is so challenged at the moment. Trolley systems are very robust once built however and do improve property values much more than any other form of at grade surface transportation hence why they were so popular "back in the day" that still be true today I think (2nd Avenue Subway Line, Brightline.)

We ripped out our electric overhead lines 20 years ago in Edmonton and I really lament that i was cheering it on back then. (Oh if I only knew back then) The system had it survived would have been wonderful and really complimented our LRT expansions. But the buses we had then were really old and public perception suffered for it. Likewise we have run into problems with our battery/electric buses both functionally and with a supplier that has gone bankrupt. So they are not a clear solution either. Anyway, electrified buses are an excellent, cost effective solution, I hope Dayton can lead by example for others to consider it too.

The new buses with hybrid operations using batteries do seem to be a big deal. Hopefully other cities are paying attention.

@@weirdfish1216 good question. I was pretty young at the time and it seemed like "progress" our electric bus lines were hold overs from the old trolley network that had long since been paved over. The "eyesore" of the overhead lines was also touted as a solution to modernize the city. But the big one for me was the buses that ran it were just old and in disrepair, there was no investment in the lines for a long time so it wasn't a point of pride. Anyway I fell for it as did most of my city's population. But all the excellent urbanist content now really helps open your perspective. I wish we had that 20 years ago to help better communicate and educate on transit and urbanism I think the outcome would have been different.

@@MultigrainKevinOs yeah we really are privileged now with how mainstream urbanist ideas are. i wasn’t even alive 20 years ago haha. i’m glad to hear you’ve changed your opinion over the years, i’m sure i would’ve fell for the anti public transportation propaganda back then too.

San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, BC keep their Tolley Buses because diesel buses couldn't handle the hills. Also, SF Muni doesn't pay for electricity because SF owns the Hetch Hetchy dam.

great video! (might delete this comment later because it’s not my place to say) but i would caution against having your kid on your channel until they’re old enough to actively ask to be on a video. as someone who was a kid who didnt realize how many people were watching the stuff my parent was posting… it’s really weird to be on the other side of it (thankfully all deleted when i asked)

Hey, appreciate the comment. Every parent has their own boundaries with this stuff and I appreciate other perspectives. I wouldn’t make my kid the point of the video, but part of who I am is her dad. She’s not in the shot for the purpose of being in the shot - she was just with me that day. What’s more, one of the main reasons I’m passionate about urbanism is to make our cities safer and better for my kids to be kids - to cross the street without fear, to walk to the park or the library on their own, etc. I think kids need to be part of this dialogue, so they’re a part of my perspective in an important way.
