The Gallows Of The Stutthof Concentration Camp Guard Executions

On the 4th July 1946 on Biskupia Gorka Hill in Gdansk, a number of brutal and barbaric concentration camp guards were executed. This included a number of female guards such as Jenny Wanda Barkmann, and the executions were performed in front of huge crowds. But the gallows created for these executions were specifically made with a number of things in mind. They were huge to give the crowd a good view, and there were many who opposed these executions because of the public nature of them. But the authorities wanted to show that after World War 2, justice was being administered.

Interesting how (according to various sources) many of the female guards had epic and glamorous nicknames, like "The Beautiful Spectre"... when, in truth , most of them (the Beautiful Spectre included) were ugly as sin...

As far as i know,A Newspaper made up that nickname,Barkmann was actually (having seen other pics) fatter and plainer during her time at the camp and just after her arrest,she dolled herself up during the trial and shed a fair amount of weight (a defence strategy i assume) but at some point she realised,she was going to be executed. Those found guilty and given the death sentence were the worst of the worst. Of the 2000-3000 people employed at Stutthof (including Kapos) only 90 or so were brought to trial and not all were found guilty

They had public executions in the UK right into the nineteenth century. Charles Dickens attended one. The last public execution in France was in the 1930s. So this happening in the 1940s isn’t really “medieval”, it’s just horrific.

What the Germans did in the 1940’s killing probably just under 10 million people is a remarkably similar figure to the people killed in the few years after the 1857 Indian uprising by the British Raj and in 1943 Churchill taking Bengal’s rice crop doomed to death by starvation 2 to 4 million Bengalis. The actual death toll from the Raj may be more than 60 million. Britain doomed to starvation over 1 million Irish people by taking at gunpoint food from Ireland for Britain. Not one person responsible faced justice. Britain isn’t in the position to lecture other countries about atrocities on civilians.

The main issue for the denazification of post war Germany was that the entire population was under Nazi domination. Even tho only a minority were actual party members the vast majority acquiesced to thier brutal rule. Unless retribution were to be meted out to almost an entire population the lower ranking and less notorious criminals would have to be dealt with leniently. The realpolitik of that day necessitated turning a blind eye to many abhorrent acts and perpetrators in the post war period across the globe.

After a war this was also a form of crowd control. It allowed hundreds of thousands of victims to feel that they had seen justice done. It took some heat out of the aftermath of war.

In the end, They had to endure a Soviet -style kangaroo court that had more to do with retribution than justice before being martyred on the gallows. The history books are written by the victors!
