Scott, the GameBoy Light and SP-001 have a *front* light, not a backlight. The distinction being that the light is on top of the screen instead of behind it. Backlights generally provide a better picture, while frontlight displays don't suffer from washout in direct sunlight.
@cube2fox7 ай бұрын
Hi sine730, do you know which kind of light it was? I think Lynx and Game Gear actually had an incandescent light bulb, which needs tons of energy, resulting in a terrible battery life. I would guess the Game Boy Light instead had a CFL, which is much more efficient. Today white LEDs are used as backlight, but I don't think they were already invented back then.

I will add, depending on how long the backlight is used, it can fade over time, so on higher-mileage Game Boy Light's, the backlight can appear MUCH dimmer. A more vibrant shade of green is a clue to a healthy backlight! (It's an electromagnetic display, same as they used to use in some digital watches!)

I never knew backlit version existed until much later. For some reason it wasn't released in Europe. A bit strange they went with the front light in the first place, given that back then all the mobile phones had a backlight instead of a front light. The reason why the gameboy worked, was because color AND backlit screens went through batteries quick. So none of those meant the thing had an insane battery life. Then once the gameboy color finally came out, it was even better considering the fact the thing was twice the power, with color, AND had better battery life, that everyone knew Sega and Atari should’ve waited for color. Especially since Segas game gear is just a Sega master system but mobile…. So no wonder it took soo much power. A backlit screen for the gameboy color would’ve made it pretty much perfect.
