I remember watching this series live... I hadn't been a big Kobe fan up to that point, but I respected him & knew he was awesome. But seeing him absolutely just annihilate an extremely sharp Spurs team like that made me really understand how special he was. For basically their entire careers, Tim Duncan had a better supporting cast than Kobe (minus the Shaq years, obviously). The fact that Kobe was able to elevate the Lakers past them in such dominant fashion is what makes me place Kobe above Duncan all-time.

They challenged him to GROW off court....to where he was able to be a winner ON Court....something i wish reached SHAQ in the kobe/shaq era that could have kept west around in MGMT. If ownership felt the same way about shaq that Kobe or even west did from a pure/winning standpoint....watching KOBE mature into the kind of player that could feed dudes like TURIAF, BENGA, POWELL with chippys or highlight/showtime passes for chippys the way he fed shaq....the way he got those players engaged and JUICED to be winners or CONTEND. Watching him grow from the kobe that swept the spurs in 01...to the KOBE that lead his lakers past them w.o shaq...is just a career in retrospect that is too great to consider even in the now...not enough time has passed to properly express how great it was watching/growing with Kobe....meanwhile shaq had dudes like penny, kobe, nash, rondo, lebron etc always played with HOF first option talent/ball handlers. This series is I think is the one that gives Kobe the edge on any conversation between him and Duncan. They’ve had numerous battles, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, But this one both have no excuse: Duncan coming off a championship with a veteran/experienced team. Kobe has inexperience team but has Gasol. Advantage players-wise goes to Spurs, as veterans plays a huge role. However, as Art of War indicates knowing your opponent vs not knowing your opponent is like night and day. Lakers coaching staff knows the Spurs very well, how they attack, what their defensive strategy. On the other hand, Spurs coaching staff have never faced this Lakers team before, the newly acquired Gasol had impacted the lakers in numerous ways, their attacking points are different compared the Kobe-Shaq era that Popovich and his group are accustomed to. So that was they key to the series going the Lakers way.

Duncan was pretty slow footed on the perimeter. Most of the star offensive players at the time who were elite shooters and off the dribble scorers DID do this to Duncan (Dirk, Nash, Allen, Pierce, Carmelo, Garnett, McGrady). The Spurs defense had much worse series than this in the 2000's. Duncan was torched by Nash and Stoudemire in 2005 and 2007. In 2005 the Suns had a playoff OffRtg 16% better than the Spurs regular season DefRtg. In 2006 the Mavericks were also at 16% better. In 2008 the Lakers were only at 2%. Some of that is surrounding players. Kobe didn't play with as strong an offensive roster as Nash did in 2005 and Gasol struggled this series. I'd counter that Duncan's movement on the perimeter was a much larger flaw than most people credited. All those former players hunted Duncan pretty successfully. Most of their teams just didn't play as good of defense as the Lakers did. That or they never played him in the playoffs (Pierce, McGrady) or their teams sucked offensively and made it easy to help onto the star (Carmelo, Garnett). Duncan was so slow by this point these aren't plays other star offensive players' couldn't and didn't make. Re-watch the 2007 Spurs-Suns or 2006 Mavericks-Spurs and you can see how much of a problem Duncan's defense was in those series too. Duncan flourished defensively when he didn't have to step up and contest elite pull-up shooters.

The defensive scheme was having Bruce Bowens forcing Kobe to the left, which was meant to have Duncan at the paint. Not only Kobe, as right handed, attacked the left side, but also forced the game before the defensive scheme was up, surprising the defense into not contesting the shots. Lastly, he used his gravitas to open up to 2 people who did actually made their shots. If it was not enough, Kobe's vertical is not that impressive, but the control, power and aim to make a shoot whilst on downward motion allowed to make incredible shots. 5 sporadic championships (1 in shortened season) in 15 years span cannot be greater than a threepeat and a back2back in a decade span. Kobe2000-2010: most points scored, most championship (5), most finals appearance (7) clearly player of the decade.

I dont care what anyone say... kobe's finals reign from 08 - 10 is more impressive than LeBron's finals reign at the miami heat during the 10 - 14 season... Kobe faced real threats in his conference and he beat them without super teams.. LeBron's run on the other hand were absolute cakewalks the only legit threat at his conference at that time were bulls and sometimes the pacers.. the rest were dog waters... Kobe 08 - 10 .. finals record is 2 - 1 LeBron 10 - 14.. finals record is 2 - 2
