What a trip down memory lane. This was my entire childhood too. First home videos of me and my brother are us acting out "This is Garth Brooks" scenes. And for my entire life, every time I've ever played "Much Too Young" on guitar, I always shout at the top of my voice GOD BLESS CHRIS LEDOUX!

I really enjoyed your look back at these specials. I remember watching them all when they aired. Reunion Arena was watched over and over. Texas Stadium was cool for the special effects, but the original airing lacked many of the early hits. Central Park and Ireland I watched over and over again. The last 2 really emphasized the music as Garth had that full catalog then. Thanks again!!

Really cool observations…and I may need to go back to these at some point and talk about some of my thoughts on the shows themselves, vs technical or differences between the releases. Because at the end of the day, the music is the most important part of any of these shows, and I missed the mark on that completely in this video. Not saying you criticized me for that, but your comment made me realize that, so thank you for that! 🙂

Rim-Jim, like you I grew up with these concerts, wore out several VCRs in the 90s lol. My question is in regards to the central park show. If you remember during one of the encores, the camera panned up towards the lighting rig under the Giant G banner, and it looked like something had caught fire. Any idea on what happend ?

Great retrospective. I'm a Garth Brooks Tribute Artist and this video brought me right back to when I first encountered Garth and his music. From that day on, I KNEW he'd be a part of my life always! The shape of you black Stetson "Tyler" hat is perfect! I have struggled with getting mine shaped just right like Garth does it. Did you do it yourself?
@TwinePoodle10 ай бұрын
I did shape mine, yes. My biggest struggle was getting the sloped crown just right…it was definitely a matter of a lot of steaming, and a lot of reshaping, but eventually I got both my black, AND brown Tyler’s shaped how I like them.

Sorry for the third comment in a row but the audio issues for Central Park were fixed in 1999 so the concert could run on Fox Family. One other oddity about the Central Park DVD release was they fixed the moment the camera froze during the lead-up to the third verse of "Friends In Low Places" but didn't fix the camera getting jammed on the track during "Two Of A Kind". I mean I'd rather they didn't change anything but it was odd they chose to fix one and not another.
@TwinePoodle Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah! I forgot about the camera freeze up during “Friends”…I dunno, I kind of enjoy there being different versions. Gives some different perspectives. I love how raw the broadcast is…has more of a “feel like your there” vibe…same goes for the sound on the VHS. I’m sure you’ve been to concerts…sometimes things go wrong, but that’s part of the charm.
@RENTnerd87 Жыл бұрын
@@TwinePoodle Speaking of that "feels like you were there" feeling, all 4 concert specials kept mic feedback in the audio mix at some point, even the filmed ones, and that may be a small thing but it feels authentic. It happened at Reunion Area during "You May Be Right", Texas Stadium in the lead up to "The Dance", Dublin during "Friends In Low Places", and a few points in Central Park but most notably during "The Thunder Rolls" (You're not the only one who had these memorized LOL)

And I may be wrong, but for some reason, I remember watching This Is Garth Brooks Too and seeing him preform callin baton rouge but that could also be one of those Mandela effects because a lot of people don’t know that not only did his two concerts air on NBC but they were also re-broadcasted on PBS later on down the road and I think that’s where I remember seeing him perform that song
@TwinePoodle9 ай бұрын
I was not aware of PBS re-airing them…now I’m interested in finding out if Baton Rouge was aired for that, and if the audio was actually live for it. The only version I’ve seen of that song from that show just has the album cut mixed in with crowd noise.
@davidevans18309 ай бұрын
Well form what I can remember it was live and a little faster pace then the album cut but I think pbs reared them after this is Garth Brooks too aired because I remember the playing them back to back
@TwinePoodle9 ай бұрын
Man, I’d love to track down a copy of that version. I don’t know of any collectors of that stuff though.
@RENTnerd879 ай бұрын
I think you probably saw the video for "Callin' Baton Rouge" on TNN or CMT around the same time of the broadcast, because if my memory is correct "Callin' Baton Rouge" was Garth's current single in May 1994, and it ironically was cut from the broadcast but TNN and CMT were running the video. Funny enough the same thing happened two years prior, Garth's current single in Feb 1992 at the time of This Is Garth Brooks' original broadcast was "What She's Doing Now", and that was also cut from the broadcast. For Ireland And Back, his current single in March 1998 was "Two Pina Coladas", which is what the special closed with
@RENTnerd879 ай бұрын
Also I have no memory of PBS re-airing the shows but if they did I assume it was during a pledge drive week

This Is Garth Brooks Too! VHS Was Not Release Was Do To The Kenny Loggins Lawsuit Over Standing Outside The Fire
@davidevans18309 ай бұрын
He also told regis and Kathy Lee that when it came to ain’t goin down didn’t realize his fly was down when he took off across the stadium and as far as the VHS release, it was put on hold because he was being sued by Kenny Loggins because he claimed that Standing Outside The Fire was a rip off of one of his songs, so Garth wasn’t allowed to promote the song for a while
@TwinePoodle9 ай бұрын
I did see that Regis and Kathy Lee interview on KZbin after this video came out, otherwise I definitely would have mentioned that! 😂

And as far as Central Park I always hated that it ended with American pie and the vhs release had more songs lol my mom was the reason I like Garth Brooks and she got so tired of renting Central Park over and over lol she didn’t understand the vhs release had more songs on it lol
@RENTnerd87 Жыл бұрын
CMT ran Ireland And Back uncut in January 2002 EXCEPT for the pub scene after "If Tomorrow Never Comes". Also I think the reason Ireland And Back never got a VHS release in the US could have been because of Jasmine Phipps from Lima Ohio. It wasn't a major news story but it was reported enough and the case was senseless and tragic enough to cast a bit of a pall over the special. Google it if you want, just know it's a really sad story
@TwinePoodle Жыл бұрын
Yeesh, once again, I had no clue. Then again I was really young back then so it definitely slipped under the radar. Man…that’s so sad. I don’t understand some people.
@RENTnerd87 Жыл бұрын
I thought the VHS release of This Is Garth Brooks Too was postponed/cancelled because of the plagiarism lawsuit over "Standing Outside The Fire". I know the video for the song was temporarily pulled from TNN/CMT/GAC until the case was settled
@TwinePoodle Жыл бұрын
Huh, interesting. I didn’t know anything about that…I’m surprised I never came across anything about it in my research, but that makes more sense as to why the release announced in 1996 was cancelled.
