He does not have the advantage of great facial similarity with Churchill but by great emotion and extreme talent he becomes Churchill in this simmering drama. The range of the man Richard Burton is nothing less than magnificent ! He played Edward Booth the brother of the assassin. That performance for me was electrifying, it was stainless steel. He has performed a myriad of guises, all to perfection. He led a masterful life and who could complain of having Liz Taylor as his wife, not he. He takes his roles so seriously and makes them all so believable. Richard Burton portraying Churchill, I was sold after the opening minutes. A great actor, Richard Burton,Sir.

Oh, my goodness!! Of all the Churchill productions I have seen, Burton shines forth as the ole' WWII statesman truer than any I've seen. Burton's physicality is unlike Churchill's, yet his likeness to Sir Winston is impeccable. I so agree with comments made that, in life, Sir Richard should have received far greater recognition as a Patriotic, British actor. Perhaps he will receive posthumously the accolation he so richly deserves. "The Gathering Storm" displays the genuine talent of Sir Burton far better than any of his fictional, Hollywood productions. How has Burton been forgotten?!? I’m not aware of it at all, and have no idea what you’re talking about. If anything, Burton cheapened his talent with film parts not worthy of him but which paid well, and he stopped acting on stage to romp around the world with Elizabeth Taylor, with whom he cheapened his talent even more as they lived an insane life of excess. Then, of course, was Burton’s extreme alcoholism, which destroyed his health _and_ his talent, so if his talent has really been forgotten-which I highly doubt-he’s mostly to blame.

It should be noted that Churchill's final speech in this excellent film has been somewhat "adapted"--in other words, slightly shortened--in order tocomply with the time limitations that were required by both the BBC and PBS for broadcasting purposes. The opening and closing music is from the final movement of Camille Saint-Saens's Symphony #3 in C Minor, better known to most listeners as "the Organ Symphony"--an excellent choice given the overall character of this marvelous production!

Unfortunately the real narrative has been censored ie Fascism is alive & well in Ukraine, Romania & Hungary. They all fought alongside the SS in WW2, the Ukrainians were especially nasty so much that even the SS couldn't stomach what they did to the Slavs in their ethnic cleansing. Today the Ukrainian Azovs Battalions honour what their great grandfathers did & they continue it, their flags are SS flags, they do torchlight parades just like the Nazis did in the 1930s. The Azovs Battalions are supported by the Ukrainian peoples & past Ukrainian Govts as they are nationalistic. These past 20yrs they have been attacking the ethnic Russians in the Crimea area trying to drive them out where they have lived for decades & centuries by murder, arson, the BBC had reports on this over 15yrs but they have disappeared now. Censored. The Ukrainians, like the Nazis don't like mentally ill or disabled people/children & they are left to rot in special sanatoriums, they are chained to beds, have no proper care or stimulus & are out of sight out of mind. Only last month the UN condemn Ukraine & ordered Ukraine to look after these people properly. For them to say this during this time is a huge point in the disquiet behind scenes & concern of Fascism in the Ukraine & other eastern Europe countries, that's why Russia invaded, they lost 24million to Fascism & growing, 20,000 young conscripts have perished. I'm no supporter of Putin but Ukraine has well & truly pulled the wool. This all goes back Stalin & the to & fro vendettas that goes on out there. NATO also had blame & should have told Ukraine to go NATO Neutral, that's all Putin wanted. Ukraine can't ever join NATO, Ukraine has been part of Russia for centuries & that's why. Look into the Azovs Battalions & it will tell you all about 'innocent' Ukraine.

@@lcopywriter5102 I beg to differ. I didn't miss my mark. In fact, I was right on target. Proof is in the speech Biden gave recently, the disgraceful and unconstitutional actions of the FBI at the direction of the Democrat party, the complete compliance of the media to Biden's and the Democrat party's agenda, recent revelations that so called "free speech" platforms like Facebook and twitter influenced the 2020 election at the behest of the FBI by censoring and de-platforming anyone who opposed Biden and the Democrats and by burying any news that would hurt Biden's election, etc. Recent information has come to light that proves the stories were true and NOT Russian disinformation as the FBI, Democrat party, and the press claimed they were. Trump didn't do any of that kind of crap and yet he was branded a tyrant and traitor with no evidence whatsoever, just a bunch of hearsay that we now know wasn't true. The media tricked people into thinking that Trump and the Republicans were the tyrants when it was, and is, the Democrat party including Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. Everything that has been happening recently is a replay of Nazi tactics being perpetrated by the Democrats. Biden made it clear that tyranny is coming soon at their hands. Everything Churchill saw is happening again because people haven't learned from history so we are repeating it. Is that clear enough for you? Or is this still cryptic gobbledygook to you? One of the best movies I've ever seen. After the indescribable horrors of the First World War it's understandable that people would go to any ends to avoid another one. After being laughed at over the years of his prodding and pleading to see the necessity of facing it; he was called upon at the very lowest point that he had predicted. They turned to him to be rescued. By rights he could have told them all to take a flying leap, retired to chartwell, set back in his lazy boy, and watch them all gag and drown in the sink hole they had created. I am in awe at the energy and willfulness he was able to bring to the job at the age of 62. This and the "Black Dog" moods he fell into from time to time make me think he was bipolar. He used alcohol to keep the damper down on the illness. . Just such an amazing story.

He starred in a lot of shite in his latter years to support his and Liz Taylor' s lifestyle, but performances like this and EQUUS showed he still had it when he was pushed.

While it is true that Albert Finney really nailed it as Churchill, Richard Burton does a damn good performance. Also interesting to see Robert Hardy (who would later portray Churchill in the miniseries The Wilderness Years) as Ribbentrop. And how cool to see a young Patrick Stewart as Clement Attlee.

Robert Hardy was a very good actor who portrayed WSC a number of times ( see War & Rememberance if you can get hold of a copy ) very successfully. Richard Burton's portrayal is passable if only to hear that wonderful voice but if you wish to see acting in all it's majesty watch Albert Finney in 'his' version of ' The Gathering Storm'. Admittedly he his supported by a truly stellar cast but at some point in the film, without the aid of prosthetics and hours in make-up you find yourself forgetting it's an actor doing his job. If you haven't seen it -find it and enjoy - you'll be glad you did.

Robert Hardy is my no1 best Churchill - in "Bomber Harris" as well.

@@davidwood9392 Er, no. I shan't be giving any reasons for this comment because there's no point, but Burton was excellent, Finney was good and Hardy did what he always did: hammed it up for all he was worth (although he was a great friend of Burton so they probably shared a joke or two about it). I think I know which one Churchill would have chosen: the young actor he saw in 1953 playing a devastating Hamlet, and whose dressing room WC he borrowed for a Churchillian pee when he went back stage to pay his respects. I'm not entirely sure Churchill would have recognised the octogenarian stammering ditherer Gary Oldman gave the world, but it was compelling.

Its sad to have to comment that today we do not see on TV anything near the quality of this.

Well worth a watch quintessentially Churchill was a great orator and so was Richard Burton. One of the most effective ways of making the most of the greatest prime minister of all

I've seen this film 3 or 4 times already and am excited to watch it again. I've learned more about Brendan Bracken since the last time I saw this film. I'm excited to watch it from a new perspective.

England had been blessed in its leaders, for th 2:07 e most part. Churcill is outstanding in every way. His courage gave the British, already a brave people, the push to stand in the face of the horrible evil of Hitler.

I never would have thought of Burton playing Churchill, but what casting! There's a great interview with Burton on the Dick Cavett show that can be found on KZbin.

Watch him as Winston Churchill in the 8 part series; he is FANTASTIC, looks like, sounds like and you believe he is Churchill, not Robert. Never thought he could do it but Robert is the BEST. Please give it a watch it will not disappoint.

Quite simply...a stunning performance by Richard Burton and a stunning moment of history. Did you see that Clement Atlee, leader of the Opposition, sat next to Churchill in Parliament, thereby declaring a unity government where all members were at one.
@martinjenkins64672 жыл бұрын
It was a unity government when Churchill took over in 1940 till 1945 for the duration of the war. It worked quite well the socialist Would have come in handy running A managed economy for the war. Free enterprise was put on hold. The government controlled everything , Food rationing , telling farmers what They could grow.

Attlee ceased to be Leader of the Opposition at the Coalition's creation: it's also noteworthy that Churchill wasn't leader of his party for his first six months as PM, Chamberlain still was until retiring shortly before his death - so for Attlee and Chamberlain to be sharing a front bench (which Labour had refused to do under Chamberlain) was in a way more notable than for either to be sharing it with Churchill.

Wow, what a cast. Herbert Wise's excellent direction. His wife, Fiona Walker plays Churchill's secretary. I think she is one of the best actresses ever. Very beautiful too. Something about her...
